Nokia said to be close to partnership with Microsoft

“Nokia Oyj is close to announcing a software partnership with Microsoft Corp., a bet that together the two companies can better challenge Google Inc. and Apple Inc., according to a person with knowledge of the discussions,” Carol Hymowitz, Dina Bass and Diana ben-Aaron report for Bloomberg.

“Nokia Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop has held talks with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer about putting Microsoft’s mobile operating system on Nokia phones, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the discussions were private,” Hymowitz, Bass and ben-Aaron report. “Elop also held talks with Google CEO Eric Schmidt about using Google’s Android software, the person said. Those discussions are unlikely to lead to an alliance, according to another person familiar with the matter.”

Hymowitz, Bass and ben-Aaron report, “Elop will unveil a new strategy for Nokia at an event in London tomorrow, laying out his comeback plan for the smartphone market… Elop, 47, took the helm at Nokia in September after a stint as head of Microsoft’s business-software division.”

MacDailyNews Take: If true, Apple will surely be quite content to own the high-end while Andoid and Windows Phone ’07 take chunks out of each other down in commodityland.

  1. Are we so sure the new font is Helvetica? Could it be,,,Oh, I dunno…Lucida Grande? (Made famous worldwide by that company in Cupertino. It is also not black but a medium gray (like Iron) which Apple is also famous for.

    1. heh-heh! It all comes together now. I just realized that Ballmer reminds me of Baron Harkkonen (a Finnish name). Remember Emperor Shaddam shouting, “get me that floating gat man, the Baron.”

  2. Both Nokia and RIM are looking like quite the acquisition targets lately. At least RIM has an end to end solution. You can lump Nokia into the “me to” pile that includes: Dell, HTC, Moto, Samsung, LG, and Sony.

  3. Apple’s Steve Jobs must be laughing his ass off when he heard this news.

If Nokia is really insane enough to put MSFT’s “mobile” OS on their new phones, it may very well be the end of Nokia. RIP!!

  4. This is a very good thing for Apple. For Nokia is it the only sane thing they could do if they want to survive in the short term since they’re not able to make a competitive OS anytime soon. In the long run they’re getting more and more commoditised.
