RUMOR: Apple’s iPad 2 coming in early April

“In what seems to be more of an educated guess than an actual report from a ‘reliable source,’ German-language Apple site MacNotes.de says that the next-generation iPad is scheduled to be released in the U.S. on either April 2 or April 9, 2011,” Steven Sande reports for TUAW.

“ince the inaugural iPad dropped on April 3, 2010, it would stand to reason that the second model would appear about one calendar year later,” Sande writes.

  1. And because I know a lot of people out there make decisions based on this information I’m letting you all know that my next poop gets released at 7:30pm Eastern Standard Time.

  2. Does anyone here know how Apple could possibly have a higher pixel density for iPad 2?

One option would be to do what they did with the iPhone 4: give it 4x as many pixels which makes the up-conversion very easy (each old pixel is now 4 pixels.) But that would make the iPad 2 have more pixels than a 27 inch Cinema Display! Not happening.

Another option would be to have a slight increase in pixel density. The problem with this is that it would make all current apps useless. It’s not like a PC where you can have different sized monitors and resolutions, iOS depends on a fixed size and fixed numbers of pixels. And redesigning your app around a new display, say 1.5x the pixel density would be exceedingly complicated. You’d really have to go back and rebuild the app from scratch.

So how come these “Retina Display” rumors keep popping up? Can someone please enlighten me on how it would be possible raise the pixel density and still run original iPad apps?

  3. “Reliable source”? More like Captain Obvious. In that vein, I proclaim Apple will update the iMac, Macbook Pro, iPod line and the iPhone in 2011.

    Just another “reliable source”!
