Code leak provides early peek at News Corp.‘s ‘The Daily’ for iPad

Apple Online Store“Some early content information has leaked on The Daily, the iPad-centric News Corp. publication expected to be announced on January 19th,” Electronista reports.

“The website associated with the app — — is said to contain a number of secrets hidden in its source code, most notably a graphic depicting two photo-heavy pages from the app featuring Oprah Winfrey and Brett Favre, respectively,” Electronista reports. “These may simply be mockups, as the Daily team has allegedly been creating sample issues for several weeks.”

Electronista reports, “One section in the code is labeled the “Story Carousel,” with forward and back buttons presumably meant to scroll through articles. Another area is titled “Share Links,” said to suggest the possibility of sharing via Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Reddit or Newsvine. A “Footer” section contains links to icons for Twitter and Facebook as well as Vimeo and YouTube.”

  1. I dunno. I think The Daily will struggle. From the small image, it looks like the app will be heavily graphics-led. And I think most people are weary of that approach these days… it’s too easy and too universal to throw pages together to look ‘wham-bam’ and, most of the time, it is an excuse for having no real content.

The public, by and large, have become over exposed and immune to the impact this approach once used to have. MDN could not – by any stretch of the imagination – be praised for it’s attention to layout and graphical beauty… but people come back again and again to glean information. It would be a lesser site if visitors had to negotiate the zappy, unwanted obstacles of sexy-looking full-screen pictures and graphics (the bl**dy ads are quite enough, thank you). That is the way of the web (and news apps)… and trying to tart them up will be rejected, I think.
