“On January 6, 2010, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that reveals one of the next chapters for Apple’s iPad,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.
“The patent introduces us to three and four speaker arrays that will advance the iPad’s audio range so as to cover high range tweeter and a lower range speaker,” Purcher reports. “But the patent packs a bigger punch by illustrating the iPad’s camera that will include facial and location orientation. So if you’re chatting in landscape or portrait, the camera will reorient itself accordingly.”
Purcher reports, “The patent also shows us that Apple is thinking of a very cool iPad stand. It’s a concept, but one that would be very, very cool to own.”

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Brawndo Drinker” for the heads up.]
Will it be THX certified?
I’m dying to see an announcement of the 2.0 version.
If mine recognizes Pelosi, it shuts down and the fuck up alarm goes off.
@X
Love in friendo, just keep these Pelosi references coming, Im right there with you!!!
A fascinating technological direction, not likely to be copied soon by any would-be rivals.
What’s with the political Tourette’s Syndrome. Isn’t this an Apple Tech site?
Facial recognition is fine and all, but I bet the real reason for this is eye tracking for 3D.
Curtis;
“political Tourette’s Syndrome” I love it! How descriptive…
Is this MacRumors page 2 or MacDailyNews? C’mon! Why not report that iPad may gain x-ray vision and a penis pump?
Mr. Flush: I enjoy your nickname. It seems the tea-birther crowd comes here often to spew their hate. Too bad, they muck up a halfway decent website, although MDN greatly encourages this nonsense to run up the clicks.
Anything remotely political I never ever read, so my eyeballs don’t hit their ads. Not sure this is what MDN really wants me to do with my sizable disposable income, but no doubt they don’t care.
This article seems to be the least politically motivated, yet here they are…………………
Better audio for gaming and movies is welcomed and I like the idea of a new kind of iPad dock. Apple’s current version is simple, but I think it sucks. This idea, if it works, would be great. I’m not sure where the connector would go, but I’m sure that they’ve worked that out.
@ Spudly. What a moron. This is Apple’s patent with real engineers working on concepts, like the iPhone, the iPad and others that come to market. It’s a great way to discusss technology ideas instead of your pornograhic bull. Morons never learn.
Why would the camera need face recognition to determine whether you were chatting in landscape or portrait mode when the orientation sensor already determines that? More shitty journalism.
@ Czech. The patent, according to this report states that “the orientation signal may provide the orientation of the device relative to a user as detected by the image recognition processor.” So argue with the engineer. The reporter just spells it out. The processor works with the image recognition camera. Perhaps you just can’t read since you’re to busy mouthing off you’re great wisdom.
Slightly off-topic, but it will be interesting to see what iPad 2.0 offers in the face of all the competition.
Once again, Apple’s philosophy of simplicity is being challenged by a plethora of me-too’s adding all sorts of bells and whistles. Multiple sizes, HDMI, card slots, USB ports, multiple speakers, faster processors, extra function buttons, and more and higher-resolution cameras pointing in a variety of directions, to name the more common ones.
This time some of those features become a little more compelling, as the tablet approaches a more convergent and central role in our information management, enterprise, social networking, and media experience (everything from universal remote to control of home electronics, remote log-in to work computers, medical informatics, inventory control, etc.).
So what features do you think it will require to be able to compete against the onslaught of literally dozens of alternatives?
Well Czech, Looks like Roy handed you a real, Reality Check.
Read the Report “Reality Czech” or get off the pot or Sh** as they say.
Another Illiterate “Czech” spouting off without reading the whole menu.
Move on.
Thanks Roy,
Also as you have pointed out allot more information in the full Patent information breakdown.
Grrrilla: I think you will find that Apples QUALITY is what will keep them competitive. This patent along with one about 3d display with no glasses required, spiral menus and so on show that Apple is really focusing on quality devices and a solid platform OS while opening up software development to the community (I.e the App store). Its this community (as it has always been with Apple) that will make the platform successful.
There is little doubt that anyone in the industry today can out-innovate Apple at this point. While everyone is buzzing about tablets, Apple is slowly building bigger and more sophisticated web services to support it’s devices. Apple seems to follow a strong philosophy of building quality and reinvesting in it’s infrastructure to create added value for its user base. The app store is a perfect example. It makes 30% of each app sold, not because it’s greedy, but because thats what it costs to realistically fund the growth of it’s services and the platform.
Everyone who brings out a cheap knock off is dooming themselves to failure because the don’t have the infrastructure or extra income (from app sales, iTunes etc.) to fund the growth that is required. is google gonna release an app store for windows? Is MS gonna build a high quality phone with a custom mobile OS?
If I was Jobs I wouldn’t be worried about competition, just how I’m gonna build all those iPad 2’s to meet demand.
@ Budinski. Very well said my man. The crap I see out of CES proves that the copy cat market is bigger than I thought and none worth a nickle. We’ll see what HP has next week. Something tells me that they may have something worth noting. But for now, Apple is waaaaay ahead of the pack.
