Oracle: Google directly copied Java code in Android

“Oracle amended its Java complaint against Google over Android patent infringement and provided line-by-line comparisons in its exhibits,” Larry Dignan reports for ZDNet.

“In its tweaked complaint, Oracle ups the ante against Google, who has called the lawsuit baseless,” Dignan reports. “Oracle, which first sued Google over Android in August, said: In at least several instances, Android computer program code also was directly copied from copyrighted Oracle America code. For example, as may be readily seen in Exhibit J, the source code in Android’s “PolicyNodeImpl.java” class is nearly identical to “PolicyNodeImpl.java” in Oracle America’s Java, not just in name, but in the source code on a line-for-line basis.

Dignan reports, “Indeed, if you look at those exhibits the lines of code are identical.”

  1. New Flash exploit(s) in the wild, for Mac’s, Linux and Windows PC’s.

    Shake, shudder and cower.

You know you should have Firefox with NoScript, BetterPrivacy, Ad Block Plus and Ghostery installed, but you just too scared.

It’s ok, Safari with private browsing and Click to Flash, Ghostery and AdBlock Plus plug-ins (under the Safari menu) will keep you safe too.

Just Safari is so depressingly grey…and the choice of plug-ins so minuscule compared to Firefox.

  2. I’m glad you’re all for everything being open, lovey-dovey and sharing everything. So, in the spirit of things, I hope you don’t mind if I stop by your place after work, raid your fridge and then proceed to do your girlfriend about seven or eight times from different positions.

I’m sure you won’t be upset. After all, it’s the equivalent of “minor code copying” as you posit.

While we’re at it, since you feel it’s perfectly okay for Google to copy what it wants, why not simply sign over the title to your house and car to me too? I’m sure you won’t mind a bit.

    Isn’t sharing fun?

Google, Apple, Microsoft, RedHat, Oracle and other companies all have the right to defend their intellectual property.

Oracle believes that Google has infringed on their patents. Google disagrees. The court will decide if the material presented by Oracle is enough to warrant a case for further exploration. If it does, then the court will decide if Google is infringing or not.

A lot of people hated Oracle even before they bought Sun. Whether they go after Google or not won’t change that. It’s sad that Sun is being dismantled as it is. But Larry will always do what he thinks is best for Oracle and that pisses a lot of people off. Plus Larry was also on the Board of Directors at Apple and considers Steve a close friend. So I can see how going after Google is both business related and personal.

Disclosure: I’ve worked at both Oracle and Sun.

  6. If you copy it, then it’s yours, right? AND it’s FREE!
‘What could be better than FREE?!?!?!?!

    @Bizarro…
Maybe you should go back to playing WoW instead of lurking around intelligent beings. Those magic spells really don’t work anywhere else.

  8. Well iOpener,

Perhaps Oracle should have examined their potential purchase a bit better before buying it instead of making enemies with buyers remorse afterwards.

The skinny frail kid in the school really can’t afford to go around and pick fights.

  10. Google brought out Android pretty quickly after Apple disclosed iOS. Maybe, just maybe, they were able to get to market so quickly because they used a little 5 finger slight of hand??????

No I wouldn’t mind if both renewed itself, which is what software is really like as it’s something that can be reproduced almost effortlessly. A real girls mind (after the horrors of you raping her) and a refrigerator full of food can’t.

Software is a shared concept like air or water, you get to use it, then I get to use it. After I’m done someone else gets to use it. Along the way it gets better as more minds look the code and think “hey I can improve that”. Evolution occurs.

It’s when a bunch of people say, “No it’s mine and I’m not letting you see it” is when the trouble starts and the innovation ceases and exploits multiply as less minds look at the code.

You know why Windows is so prone to vulnerabilities?, because it’s closed. You know why Linux and BSD Unix (the core of OS X) is so secure? Because many people get to look at the code, make changes, diverge it’s path for different uses etc.

It’s this concept that Oracle obviously has trouble understanding as they got a bunch of bean counters going over the remains of Sun.

Core type code should be open source/public domain and more detailed specific programs like iTunes should be closed to recuperate the investment and not outright stolen and copied.

Java has been around awhile and become a core type code, sort of having passed into the public domain, it’s because Oracle just got Sun and Java recently they think it should be closed.

If Oracle had Java for 20 years, they likely wouldn’t care if Google inadvertently copied it, as they would have already recouped their investment in it.

  14. @Mr. Reeee

If you copy it, then it’s yours, right? AND it’s FREE!
‘What could be better than FREE?!?!?!?!

Free as in the concept of being “open” and allowed to examine the code and make changes to improve it and keeping the new code in that state, yes.

Nothing is stopping someone from slapping a price on their new code and trying to retail it to ordinary consumers who don’t know how to code. Like what OS X does.

OS X is based on BSD Unix, which is a “free” operating system and likely wouldn’t have existed if the Berkley students didn’t have the opportunity to hack on the code.

Oracle invested nothing in Java, except what they paid for Sun and the lawyers who are suing Google over it. If they attached some value to Java pre-purchase they shouldn’t have. Java has been around for ages, it’s nearly public domain and should have been so at least somebody would develop on it.

Hardly anyone uses Java anyway, just a few stupid government sites and their on line records systems.

  16. @Mark Bizzarro

Good lord you are an idiot.

I don’t know of any software programers that are going to work for free.

That is what you push. Open software…free software.

Someone has to put in the long hours writing it.

Do they do this on a free computer?
Free office or house they sit in?
    Free electricity?
    Free food and water?

Once you can provide me with all that for free, then sure I’ll write software and give it away for the common good.

But if you can’t, then f@ck off. Write your own software instead of stealing everyone else’s.
