Oracle: Google directly copied Java code in Android

“Oracle amended its Java complaint against Google over Android patent infringement and provided line-by-line comparisons in its exhibits,” Larry Dignan reports for ZDNet.

“In its tweaked complaint, Oracle ups the ante against Google, who has called the lawsuit baseless,” Dignan reports. “Oracle, which first sued Google over Android in August, said: In at least several instances, Android computer program code also was directly copied from copyrighted Oracle America code. For example, as may be readily seen in Exhibit J, the source code in Android’s “PolicyNodeImpl.java” class is nearly identical to “PolicyNodeImpl.java” in Oracle America’s Java, not just in name, but in the source code on a line-for-line basis.

Dignan reports, “Indeed, if you look at those exhibits the lines of code are identical.”

  1. You watch, suddenly all OpenOffice and Java users will get a pop-up and a 30 day notice to buy the software or it will cease to exist on their machine.

Soon as LibreOffice is on it’s feet, out of beta…switch.

The file format should be fine.

  3. New Flash exploit(s) in the wild, for Mac’s, Linux and Windows PC’s.

    Shake, shudder and cower.

You know you should have Firefox with NoScript, BetterPrivacy, Ad Block Plus and Ghostery installed, but you just too scared.

It’s ok, Safari with private browsing and Click to Flash, Ghostery and AdBlock Plus plug-ins (under the Safari menu) will keep you safe too.

Just Safari is so depressingly grey…and the choice of plug-ins so minuscule compared to Firefox.

  5. I’m glad you’re all for everything being open, lovey-dovey and sharing everything. So, in the spirit of things, I hope you don’t mind if I stop by your place after work, raid your fridge and then proceed to do your girlfriend about seven or eight times from different positions.

I’m sure you won’t be upset. After all, it’s the equivalent of “minor code copying” as you posit.

While we’re at it, since you feel it’s perfectly okay for Google to copy what it wants, why not simply sign over the title to your house and car to me too? I’m sure you won’t mind a bit.

    Isn’t sharing fun?

Google, Apple, Microsoft, RedHat, Oracle and other companies all have the right to defend their intellectual property.

Oracle believes that Google has infringed on their patents. Google disagrees. The court will decide if the material presented by Oracle is enough to warrant a case for further exploration. If it does, then the court will decide if Google is infringing or not.

A lot of people hated Oracle even before they bought Sun. Whether they go after Google or not won’t change that. It’s sad that Sun is being dismantled as it is. But Larry will always do what he thinks is best for Oracle and that pisses a lot of people off. Plus Larry was also on the Board of Directors at Apple and considers Steve a close friend. So I can see how going after Google is both business related and personal.

Disclosure: I’ve worked at both Oracle and Sun.
