Microsoft’s Windows Phone ‘07 a Vista-like dud?

Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac “In the extremely high stakes competition in smart phone operating systems, Microsoft’s new Mobile OS appears to be a stone loser,” Greg Mills writes for Macsimum News. “This is for a number of indisputable reasons.”

“The expensive advertising program (rumored to be half a billion dollars) which will be launched soon, and the efforts of various hardware companies and cell phone carriers rallied to support Vista 7 are likely to be a doomed and completely wasted effort.,” Mills writes. “This will certainly end Microsoft’s presence in the mobile market, which includes both smart phones and slate computers.”

MacDailyNews Take: Or force them to buy RIM.

Mills writes, “Microsoft has failed to preform. Zune, Ken [sic], Vista and now Mobile Vista 7 have all failed to offer anything really new or compelling to excite consumers or investors in Microsoft products or stock. The issue is not as much what the new platform amounts to, but the poor timing and lack of compelling new features.”

“Had this new platform been launched shortly after iPhone took off, it would be different,” Mills writes. “Had this mobile OS been launched about the same time as Google’s Android OS, Vista 7 might have found a market. It is just too late for something that is not really compelling. Windows Mobile 6.5 is expected to remain the Microsoft platform for business smart phones while the new Vista 7 will be the consumer smartphone platform. Neither platform is compelling.”

  1. In the photos, Ballmer had the new phones displayed using black mesh business card holders (from Staples?) as stands… Pretty pathetic really. At the very least they could have gotten some nicer stands. I guess if it looks like shit, works like shit, feels like shit, and smells like shit – it probably is shit, and there is no need to taste it to be sure.

  3. I can’t believe this got linked as a “news” article. It’s nothing more than a rambling, opinionated rant. I see better writing in the MDN comments.

I mean, I may agree with the sentiment behind the article, but c’mon MDN. This just makes you look bad.

  5. Why is he calling it “Vista 7”? Why make flat-out predictions? Why put your neck out to look like an absolute fool 6~12 months down the line like all those fools (including Ballmer) who predicted doom for the iPhone and the iPad? People can say that it probably won’t do too well and things like that but why bother with stating what will exactly happen? Let’s just wait and see how things play out.

  7. Everyone is so focused on how well the platform performs and not bothered to question the underlying business model that Microsoft has adopted here. How are they supposed to make money off of this thing? The license revenue will be utterly negligible – no manufacturer is going to pay MS more than a buck or two per phone.

Advertising revenue will be pennies here and there and they’re destined to compete as a minor bit player against googles adsense and apples admob. Even if they succeed in capturing 50% of the market (yeah right) the profit margin will be a joke, if anything windows mobile 7 will have to operate as a loss leader for the foreseeable future.

Microsoft right now is blowing through cash at a phenomenal rate. There’s only a year or two they can keep this up without depleting their dubious bank assets to less than zero.

  9. Windows phone 7 phones will sell like hotcakes in BOGO or 2fer mode.

BOGO or 2fer mode is two for the price of one sales. It pushes Android crap like crazy, it’ll do the same for Windows 7 phone crap.

Hell, cheap as borscht has done it for Windows products for years.

“Microsoft’s new Mobile OS appears to be a stone loser”

Yeah, and we knew this was the case the day they announced its specs. Too little, waayyyy too late, SOS: Same OId Shite.

Chalk up yet-another Microsoft DEATH THROW. Now we get to watch the moribund company shake, shimmy and writhe in agony for a few more months. Doctor CA$H will come to the rescue, MS will live to bungle another day, and we will get years more of joyful entertainment. I just feel bad for the suckers who’ll be hurt while we sit around placing bets as to when the invalid will expire.
