“Analysts at Goldman Sachs Group said Monday Apple Inc. may roll out a thinner iPad with a built-in camera and mini-USB drive by June, later than some others have projected,” Cromwell Schubarth reports for The Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal.
“Sales of tablet computers from Apple and others could reach 16 million units this year and 35 million in 2011, Goldman Sachs projected,” Schubarth reports.
MacDailyNews Take: Yeah, right, “and others.” Puleeze. 15,999,996 iPads and four non-Apple tablets to the Ballmer household.
Schubarth reports, “Apple sold more than 3 million iPads in the 80 days after they were introduced in April, instantly becoming one of its best-selling products.”

Mni USB drive? No way.
Also, Apple updates the iPhone in June. It can’t handle 2 major product updates in the same month.
This rumor make some sort of sense, because Apple will try to harmonize new hardware releases with new software releases – so iPad 2 together with iOS 5 at the end of June is more than likely.
iOS 4.2 in November is too soon and the wrong season for a major revision with new processors, retina display and stuff like that but maybe Apple surprises with a silent update with minor improvements like double the RAM to 512 MB, add the gyro sensor to the prearranged space on the mainboard and add a webcam. All these components make only sense with iOS 4 an add only a few dollars to the calculation.
And there is another evidence for my theory – the interims november update will be exactly in the middle of the April 2010 to June 2011 period.

“It is not one of its best-selling products; it is THE best selling product of all time. Not Apple, and not anyone else, has ever sold a product in such numbers so quickly.”
Unless you count things like the Harry Potter books, the seventh of which sold 15 million copies in its first 24 hours….

I see an interim update that adds a FaceTime camera early in 2011 and after that a more significant update with thinner chassis, maybe smaller version later in 2011.
Apple shouldn’t rest on their laurels.

Goldman is playing both sides. All day long. Every day.
This is the era of nano-second trading.

No way.
Apple has a big lead and intends to keep it.
Maybe not before Christmas as I would have hope but definitely by the 1-year anniversary. You can bank on that.

I believe he was referring to consumer electronics, where the previous notable products range from RAZR to Nintendo DS, to Sony PSP, all of which were eclipsed by Apple’s devices.
I don’t think any product out there could ever outsell Harry Potter books…

…”Apple shouldn’t rest on their laurels.”
Do you really think it needs to be said?? When did ever Apple rest on their laurels?
Apple never tried to milk a product for whatever its worth before doing a refresh (well, maybe Mac Pro, or Studio display…), but mainstream consumer devices were always on an annual refresh. A cycle shorter than a year is unnecessary.

I just double-checked the ship date of the original iPad, which was April 8, and it was announced earllier in the year. Given product refresh cycles with Apple, typically, the company keeps to a consistent set of approximate dates. My hunch is that components such as the completion of the Cortex A9 and related key items could in part drive the launch.
In the case of the Blackberry “we stole from Apple’s Playbook”, their hinted-at date is more likely based on when they think they can actually ship a working product. Yesterday’s hype by RIM was slideware – it’s likely that their OS is still in Alpha stage, and viewers were shown no working prototype, just a nifty multi-media presentation.
I think Apple has more discretion on when it chooses to roll-out generation 2 of the iPad. So count me among the optimists that June would be the extreme delivery date for the next version of the iPad. Personally, I believe it will be much sooner than that.
Most analysts could not hit the broadside of a barn…

My (moderately) realistic ipad wish list:
1 osascript
2 xcode (using provisioning profiles that u have to pay $100 a year to get)
3 finder
My real ipad wish list
MacOS (and I don’t care if it’s slower then windows I would use it on a desktop even if it were slower then windows so on a tablet that would just be epic) maybe version 11 and with support for using ios apps as dashboard widgets (and yes I actually use the dashboard)
unfortunately I don’t think that I’ll get ether (maybe it’s time to email apple)

@ Stephen
You better email to Microsoft – they have a passion for stupid ideas.

In this case an accelerated schedule of new features and or models might be a good idea for Apple.
They have an advantage now but there’s soon going to be a slew of copycat wannabes.
Apple should leapfrog these losers and cement this lead.
