AppleInsider reports, “Apple is destined to revamp its super-slim, but soft-selling MacBook Air as early as this fall, wrapping the new model around an LED-backlit display that’s nearly two inches smaller than the model available today… The first evidence to this end arrived earlier this year when an analyst citing sources in Apple’s Taiwanese component supply chain revealed that the company was placing orders for parts to fit a slimmer and lighter MacBook Air based around an 11.6-inch LED-lit display and Intel Core i-series ultra-low voltage processor.”

“Apple last updated the 13.3-inch MacBook Air back in June of 2009 when it dropped the entry-level price to US$1,499 from $1,799 for a model with a 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo,” AppleInsider reports. “A $1,799 offering based around a 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 128GB solid state drive was also introduced.”

  1. 11.6, you say? 1280×800 pixel resolution at 11.6-inch is about 130 pixels per inch. That sounds about right for the next size down from the well-used 13.3-inch screen. A very believable rumor – Apple has to do “something” with MacBook Air…

  3. Hmm, interesting. I`m shopping around for a netbook in order to run Linux (network admin stuff) I`m in no real rush but if Apple releases or announces a device like this in say January I think I just may bite. I`m wondering if this product would include an option for an AMD part (another rumor) would be a perfect fit for the Zacate APU.

  5. Hate to be a naysayer here, but I don’t understand why reducing the Air by 2″ is a good thing. My “old” 13.3″ Air seems just right. Less screen real estate, to me, is not something desirable. If I want to use something smaller, I pick up my iPad.

  7. @ 84 Mac Guy:

I have to agree 100%. Less screen real estate is very bad.

Apple has repeatedly stated they don’t know how to build a worthwhile netbook. Moving to an 11.6″ screen is moving into the netbook world. The Air is an ultra portable notebook, not a netbook.

I hope this rumor is not true. If it is, I will not be buying the next Air.

  9. Don’t see it. This configuration would essentially be an iPad with an attached keyboard. Makes no sense. Apple doesn’t need product proliferation. Keeping the product options simple has been a hallmark of recent Apple product offerings. I’ll put this one on the same shelf as the 7″ iPad.

  11. This seems like a more credible rumor than most. Loss of screen size would be at least somewhat offset by an improvement in portability. And that would result in a stronger niche than being a lighter, thinner, stripped 13.3″ MacBook Pro.

A MacBook Air of the rumored size would end up becoming the “real” netbook, much like the iPad has become the “real” tablet. The Apple MacBook Air “netbook” would be highly portable and, yet, fully functional with high-quality components including a great display.

  13. I don’t know. A lot of people, including me, were happy with their 12″ PB’s. This will basically be that size. There are a lot of us that need more than an iPad for what we do. I have an Air and it’s great to travel with and does everything I need it to do. An iPad, while it’s an unbelievable piece, doesn’t run all the programs I need it to run. So this might be an option for a number of people. It will never be a huge seller but it fits a niche and would be a cool looking laptop.

  15. I’d like to see this at $999 to replace the plastic MacBook. The price must be going down with a smaller screen and along with its already less than MacBook specs.

That would be a killer product and be between the top iPad and low-end MacBook Pro. $899 would actually be a better price fit.

  17. BAsed on those production number it has to be coming in at a low price and with a screen that size and with all else being less than a Macbook it makes sense, between the iPad and MacBook Pros… sweet!
