Apple Peel 520 now ready for retail; accessory transforms iPod touch into smartphone

GoSolarUSA announced today that the initial manufacturing run of the Apple Peel 520 has left the factory and is on its way to retail store shelves.

Created by Chinese developer Yosion, the Apple Peel 520 is a wireless skin that transforms Apple’s iPod touch media player into a smartphone. The new technology represents a more affordable alternative to purchasing Apple’s iPhone. Yosion’s Apple Peel 520 will first appear in stores in China before migrating to North America.

“There’s no question that there is tremendous consumer demand for an item like the Apple Peel 520,” said Tyson Rohde, President of GSLO, in the press release. “There is truly a huge market for iPod touch accessories, both in the U.S. and around the globe. With the Apple Peel 520, we believe we will have the most exciting and functional iPod accessory produced to date.”

Apple CEO Steve Jobs claimed earlier this month that the electronics giant has sold 275 million iPods since the device’s release. The iPod touch is Apple’s newest and most advanced model, reinventing the iconic media player into a pocket computer. Three weeks ago, Jobs unveiled a new, slimmer version of the iPod touch featuring the same 24-bit Retina display and A4 processor as the company’s iPhone 4 and proclaimed it to be the “number one portable game player in the world.”

By developing and marketing the Apple Peel 520 in the U.S., GoSolarUSA aims to turn each of those portable game players into functional smartphones. The Apple Peel 520 slips over the iPod touch’s case and includes a 4.5-hour battery, dock connector and SIM card. Once the proper software is installed, the Apple Peel adds the ability to make voice calls and text messages to all versions of the iPod touch.

“The Apple Peel 520 is a very affordable piece of technology that greatly increases the functionality and value of the iPod Touch,” Rohde said. “We believe strongly that this is something all Touch users will want, and it will be priced for any budget.”

Following the Apple Peel’s release in China, GoSolarUSA will be responsible for making the device available in the U.S., the world’s largest market for iPod accessories.

Pricing and release date to be announced.

  1. I would be interested to know the detailed repartition of the retail price. Who can project figures ? How many intermediates and how much profit for each step ? What is Yosion’s part ?

  3. @ Midwest Mac.

The previous version was CDMA, so assuming this one is too, then yes, it will work on Verizon, and ironically, not AT&T.

The tradeoff is no 3G, unless they’ve added it this time around.

Good point there..could it even be that Yosion is “sponsored” by Verizon? This way Verizon gets the iPhone through the “backdoor” ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  7. This is a great idea and product idea. Unfortunatly it requires a jailbreak and the software is glitchy at best, apple should be making or assisting in the development of this for it to be good

  8. Figures . . . I just bought a mifi device for Verizon so I can use my touch on the road. The rates are awful and I’m tied in for a year.

A legit Verizon iPhone — with or without visual voicemail — would get my money awfully damn quick.

  10. There have been some bad reviews of the Apple Peel 520.

Suggestion: Have patience while it is vetted by the bleeding edge.

Also know that it requires the use of a SIM card. Therefore, you’re limited to telcos that use them, i.e. GSM devices, i.e. in the USA: AT+T, Verizon, T-Mobile and a few minor providers.

However, if this version is limited to CDMA technology, then your ONLY choice is Verizon.

  12. Also note, at this time CDMA technology does NOT allow multitasking while on a phone call. You’re stuck on the call with no other access to the iPod Touch. This has always been, and will remain for the time being, one of the drawbacks of making iPhones for Verizon. You may get a better network, but you lose iPhone functionality.
