5 reasons why people hate Apple

Apple Online Store“Every company has its opponents, but Apple really gets people worked up. Some people hate Apple a lot, more than they hate Nazis or Smurfs. They leave angry comments on Apple blogs. leave angry comments on Apple blogs,” Mitch Wagner writes for Computerworld.

Wagner writes, “Based on my extensive observations of the species, Apple-haters fall into five categories.”

If you’re an Apple-hater, which one of these categories do you fit in?

#1: You believe buying Apple undermines your individuality: Is this a good reason to hate Apple? No, it’s dumb.
#2: You hate Apple culture: Is this a good reason to hate Apple? No, it’s dumb.
#3: You’ve had a bad experience with Apple products: Is this a good reason to hate Apple? Heck, yes.
#4: Apple isn’t right for you: Is this a good reason to hate Apple? No, it’s dumb.
#5: You hate Apple’s closed architecture: Is this a good reason to hate Apple? Well, half-and-half.

  1. I am bit by bit losing my faith in the basic good in humanity when all I see is how they “Hate” and want to “Kill”.

How about “Create” an alternative yourself, you f$cking loser! Or maybe show some ability to “innovate” better, you stupid shill.

  2. @djonaise:

Humanity wanting to “Hate” and “Kill” is nothing new; in fact, it’s probably less than ever and really more civilized, if you can call hating and killing civilized.

Go look back just to the last century, with the Nazis, ethnic cleansing in Asia and Africa, Pol Pot, the Soviet Union, etc. It may be hard to believe, but people have actually cleaned their act up a bit.

But I do agree that all the talk over “Hate” gets old, and the people playing race cards, hate cards, religion cards, etc. gets tiresome, particularly when it’s done in today’s insta-media world and without basic knowledge of what actually happened in the event they’re commenting on. It’s gotten to the point of the boy who cried wolf – I just don’t believe most of these special interest organizations any more.

  3. A day in the life of a typical ihater…

I see, so you woke up this morning to scour the net again for pro-Apple news. And here you find yourself. Probably didn’t read the article but made the correct assumption that is was favorable to Apple. So then you said to yourself, how can I, the more intelligent individual when it comes to customer satisfaction, ensure that the world knows that Apple products are subpar and are the worst in the world. All this without ever even using an Apple product. Or maybe you hate them cause they are so controlling, they are forcing people to buy their products at gun point. Maybe you hate Apple product because they are manufactured with mind controlling materials that cause users to believe there is no product better than an Apple product. My theory? You have purchased a non-Apple product that you are so in love with and can’t figure out why the rest of the world doesn’t see this awesome product like you see it, a gift sent from the heavens, so magical so complete, so overwhelming. But, everyday you look for articles touting the awesomeness of your product, unable to find any. All you can find are articles that predict the next iPhone Killer or articles on how Apple profits are soaring. And you hate this, you hate it because you are left out in the cold and have purchased a product nobody gives a shit about. Your product is another has-been. This makes you angry to see others happy with their product with no mention of yours. So, you decide to post a comment on how much you hate Apple products with no experience whatsoever.

Not my words, but sums it up completely

  4. After being the ass-donkey bitch of Bill Gates for decades, some people finally admit yhat Apple products are superior, so they have to come up with the cover.. Oh i like Apple products but not Apple. …. Pathetic

  5. Here you are again. There are not only five reasons to hate Apple. Motte than that. If somebody hate apple, don’t argue with them because they have reasons, and PC is fit to their life more. To me, whether you use Mac or PC, it doesn’t really matter. I don’t care the company ‘Apple’ or ‘Microsoft’ if their products fit into my work or life. It is strange why this fscking Mac website posted like this kind of bull shit.

  6. I use products because they address my needs. If Apple makes the product and it and I get along, then I’ll buy it. If Microsoft makes the product and we get along well, I’ll buy it instead. For me, it’s products that best address needs, no who makes it.

That said, I do find Apple’s reluctance to admit mistakes amusing. The recent “antennagate” brouhaha is but one example. There are also bonehead decisions that Steve Jobs makes. Example: MBPs don’t have Blu-ray drives. Why? Because Mr. Jobs says we should be watching movies via the net. Don’t know if that’s true or the real reason. I do know that 500 GB drives backed up to 8 GB media means backups won’t get done.

If you want to hate a manufacturer, focus on Dell: unimaginative products, shipping known bad motherboards, crappy support. Now THAT’S a company worthy of your vitriol.

  7. Perhaps a clarification as Ubermac seems to have missed my point. My first Mac was an SE30. Apple has made superior products for years and currently does. But if another company makes better products with better customer service cones out tomorrow. I will use their products. My loyalty is to the products that make my life easier and are fun and easy to use. Right now Apple is making these products and making them well. But they are a business and their main goal is to turn a profit.

  8. #14: You are a pathetic community college “certified” windows corporate i.t. guy (and of course a virgin) and the longterm sustainability of your “career” is threatened by computers and phones that actually work and are easy to use by staff. Completing your timesheet requires weekly firmwide patch uploading, daily virus definition updates, and “teaching” staff how to use the START button to turn-off their Dell Shit-Boxes.

  9. #14 You think computers are supposed to be recalcitrant and difficult to use.
#15 Apple’s OS and its ease of use and stability jeopardizes your position in an IT department that has relied on Windoze’s instability for job security.

  10. MacDailyNews Take: There are way more than just 5 reasons:
#6: You have an inferiority complex.
#7: You suffer from Stockholm Syndrome.
    #8: You’re experiencing cognitive dissonance.
#9: You have class envy issues.
#10: You’re an IT guy worried about job security.
#11: You’ve never used an Apple product.
#12: You have a below average IQ.
    #13: You’re a hit-whore…

    MDN You fscking nailed it…

    Thanks again.

  11. My favourites so far are:
#12: You have a below average IQ.
    #16: You’re an idiot

These comments illustrate quite nicely how it looks from the inside out. Can you guess how it looks from the outside?

A community of “I handed over some money and I received a product from this company” that makes comments like #6-#16 (and comments #17-#100, which will arrive shortly) is a reason why many people don’t want to be associated with this company.

  12. Ubermac.

Yes, I do not like apple the company. I DO like most of their products.
I have never liked MS, but I used their stuff. Never liked it… But had too.
Well still do… Can’t really play games on a Mac. Some but not nearly the library.

So yes, you CAN like the products but not the company.

  13. My first Mac was the Mac 512K, i.e. the second ever Mac, and I’ve had a procession of Macs ever since. Currently, I have 5 operational Macs.

Confidence and arrogance are the plus and minus of the same characteristic.

I love Apple’s confidence to innovate amazing ideas. I love OSX.

I have Apple’s arrogance, when it gets it wrong. Some things, that Apple is arrogant about, I can live with — but I cannot live without matte, anti-glare screens. See the 1,100+ petitions that indicate a minority, but substantial number of Apple users that need matte screens. Generally, these are:

    – the percentage of the population that is susceptible to eye-strain and migraine headaches from the glossy screen;
    – graphic artists
    – photographers
    – people who use their Macs in bright sun-lit areas

We’re not saying matte screens are for everyone — but there should be a choice.

If you’re in desperate need of a matte screen on your iMac, you might add your petition to the growing list at http://macmatte.wordpress.com/comment-page-1/#comments

  14. Most people who hate apple have not used apple products or have spent little or no time on a friends or demo model. Wasn’t use to the layout compaired to their PC. Thus giving up walking away giving a bad label.
Or just those ignorant pricks “this one is better because I have it” which can try to convince you that crap is gold. An are not interested in entertaining the possibility that something else might be better

  15. I don’t know much about hating Apple. What I do know is that when Commodore and Amiga went down, I had to switch to something. At the TV station where I worked, we had Macs and Windows machines. I saw the nightmare of using windows. The viruses that brought down the shoe station, the lost files and the crashes. All of these issues affected the windows machines, but not the macs. So, I chose the Mac and never looked back.

  16. “Reasons Why” ?! Gawd doesn’t anyone speak/write English anymore? The headline is redundant. It should be “5 reasons people hate…” And don’t tell me about “ours is not to reason why”. In that case, reason is a verb (as in the act of “reasoning”). And don’t get me started on the missuse of their, there and they’re and of course your & you’re – it’s really sad how stupid and/or lazy people are these days. /rant

  17. Yes I know I can run windows from a Mac.

It’s funny that my Mac has a 1/10 the power at best of my dual 1gb dual sli cards, quad sli rapes anything an iMac can do.
My old wow guild, 2 guys ran iMacs. Never could get half the framerate I can In the city. Wow has a framerate lock at 200 fps… Or had, think they mentioned something about some change to that. I was always capped at 200 unless during a raid, I fell to only 110 at the worst point.

Sorry macs do great things, but an iMac just can’t beat the power of homebuilt pc’s with high specs with games. Oh yeah, for $1073 total.

  18. I love it when people here rail against MDN’s pro Apple take. It makes me laugh every time. Do you also complain that the sun rises and sets everyday. I mean seriously, have you ever been here before? and even if you haven’t, how long does it take to realize that this is probably the most pro Apple site that you’ll ever visit? Duh? That’s what I love about MDN, there’s no pretense of bi-partisanship here and that’s fine with me. It’s great shtick and very entertaining for Apple fans which I’m sure is EXACTLY what they’re shooting for. It’s genius really…wish I’d have thought of it. Bottom line, THINK before you troll your anti Apple opinion here because no one gives a %#$@ what you think. The fact that you’d be trolling here, of all places, tells us that you were one of those kids on the “short” bus that got whisked into the building out back when we were in grade school. Always wondered what happened to those kids. Guess now I know.

  19. #6 hits it right on the head. I think most of those who hate Apple watch too much TV and buy into every single insipid commercial there is. And these are people who have never used a single Apple product. These are also people who think that the tin boxes that we drive should “reflect their lifestyle”; which is so goddamn pathetic and sickening, it’s not worth discussing…

  20. @sjsw: I used to think that MDN was another brilliant Apple marketing move, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t. I’m sure now that I was completely wrong about that, but if I ran Apple, a site like this would most likely be one of my strategic ideas for marketing the brand. It’s just too brilliant, if totally unlikely…

  21. @Figurative and Ronin:

A lot of people hate Apple because they mistake enthusiasm and intense passion for arrogance.

+1 to Figurative for hitting this SQUARE on the head.

Ronin: read that again. Only those with a mediocre mentality would mistaken enthusiasm and intense passion for arrogance. That is to say, 99% of the western world. Anytime someone does something better, and it’s PROVEN to be better; whether it’s leaving a crap job for a much better one, or creating a product which has been shown time and time again to be better built, to run better, and have better support; those with their lacksidal, lazy, and “good enough” attitudes will always knock it down.

The proof is in the pudding: happy and loyal customers, world-class design, and a very large… no… HUGE stockpile of cash in the bank (45+ billion? I don’t know the exact number).

    That’s all the proof I need…

  22. Hating something to the extent of being publicly vocal about it should be reserved for very important issues.

With respect to #3: You’ve had a bad experience with Apple products: Is this a good reason to hate Apple? No, not unless you attempted to work with Apple to address the issue and they basically spit in your face. You will eventually have a bad experience with most companies. It is how the company works them out with you that defines the companies you should stick with or avoid.

With respect to #5: You hate Apple’s closed architecture: Is this a good reason to hate Apple? Well, half-and-half. Wrong answer. This is a reason to avoid purchasing Apple products. If you yearn for Apple products, but dislike Apple’s control over their computer and mobile ecosystem, then that is an internal conflict with which you must deal. But it is no reason to hate Apple. Go buy Microsoft and Android products and hate them, instead. At least you will have a decent reason for your ire.

I am a long term Apple user. I started three decades ago with an Apple II. Apple has certainly had its ups and downs (anyone remember the VX?), but the experience has generally been good. During the past decade, in particular, Apple has excelled.

Hate is not a healthy state of existence. So conserve your hate for the things that really matter. Thanks to Apple, you now have some reasonable choices in smartphones and apps and data plans that did not exist four years ago. Why not love Apple for that and let the rest go?

  23. @MikeD
I suspect that the lack of options for built-in Blu-Ray drives is mostly driven by the licensing and DRM attached to that format. I could be wrong, of course. But I believe that the reason is a bit more substantive than “use wireless.”

I have seen a number of posts about attaching an external Blu-Ray drive. So you do have an option if you still choose to buy a Mac. It just isn’t as neat and clean as a built-in drive.

  24. @Backlash

Other than gaming, your high frame rate PC hasn’t got much else to offer. High frame rates don’t count for shit when you’re just trying to get some work done because Windoze will ALWAYS get in the way of that. No matter how fast a machine is, it will always only be as good as its OS. As long as you’re running Windoze, your machine will be craptastic at best.

  25. Please OSX is a knock off of BSD Unix with a nice front end. It wasn’t birthed at apple. It was bought and modified from Next. Apple couldn’t get an OS to work so they had to buy one. So while I hate windoze and microsh*t more than the next person, realistically apple is no paragon of OSes. Let’s see them make one from scratch and then carp on about it? Wait, they did…but time passed it by long ago. It is quaint and quite dismal by today’s standards.

  26. It’s not arrogance if I am superior! My IQ was enough higher that I bought a superior product – and we all know it!

The Windoze people are less productive? Let them work longer! Let them eat cake!

  27. @Brulek:

The irony is that Microsoft didn’t invent MS-DOS from scratch, either.

True credit goes to Tim Paterson at Seattle Computer Products, who didn’t know that Bill had sold their product to IBM before he bought the rights to 86-DOS (aka “Q-DOS”) from them.

And insofar as BSD to OSX, perhaps we should give credit where credit is due: Apple at least recognized that their OS was broken and needed dramatic fixing. When is that realization going to finally happen in the Windows World?

  28. I once met an “IT guru” who is the owner of an “IT consultancy” and he plain stated to a bunch of us (all tech professionals) that Apple should not exist because it makes tech too accessible to people. It’s too easy, he said. It should be much harder. And he said it with a straight face, as if we would agree with him. I just turned to the guy next to me and gave him a “What’s with THAT?” look and he nodded in understanding. We figured the guy just wanted to feel elite about technology, as if laypersons don’t deserve to use tech and should pay him to figure it out. Kinda like lawyers.

  29. Mac that roared.

Also remember that the SuperDrive…. Mislabeled. Is not nearly as fast as the basic pc drive. Takes me forever to burn a disc on the Mac, 5 minutes on the pc.

And blu-ray… Who the hell buys dvd’s anymore? I know they want you to go wireless and buy from iTunes. But like right now, I’m on the road to go fishing. No, im not driving lol. In order to watch a new blu-ray I bought, unless it comes with a DVD version I have to toss it in the pc and rip it for the Mac to watch.
And no, not going to rip it or add the digital copy to iTunes.
I rip it once, and can watch it on the Mac, pc, ps3/360, iPhone etc.

Mac is great, but it’s not the best at everything.

And I just mentioned wow cause it’s not at all a fps hog… Sure in some spots but nowhere near what the average fps is. When did you EVER see any Mac at a gaming LAN party or gamer contest of any kind. You don’t. To upgrade anything outside ram, it’s buy a new machine.

I only run windows on one machine now, and when I built it it posted a higher score than a Mac pro with Photoshop. And paid 1/3 less.

I don’t hate apple, they just bug the crap out of me with some of the things they do.

  30. Actually, it’s quite simple. Nobody likes to have their noses rubbed in the fact that their chosen computer platform totally sucks. However, an intelligent person will eventually get the message and buy a Mac, while a moron will just throw stones.

  31. @ hh

I am well aware that Tim Patterson wrote QDOS that microsoft ‘borrowed’ for MS-DOS. Even windows 95 had IBM involved- the win95- o/S2 warp split.

NT, though bossed by Dave Cutler, the guy who helped make VMS, however could be considered Microsh*t’s. Hence WNT: one step from VMS. (like HAL one step from IBM). This means win 2000, xp, vista and 7- on the NT line are all microsh*t efforts.

I’m not defending microsh*t. I’m just not deifying apple for somebody else’s work.

  32. @shaw. Listen idiot. MDN passes itself off as a legitimate news source in which they are not. I got MDN on my IPhone to get news on Apple products but not to see the endless amount of zombies to who can’t tell when Apple is doing wrong. Now as a person who has built Pc’s but also likes Apple’s products I resent the intellectual dishonesty shown on this site. If Apple was so grand why are they not selling IMacs like crazy? Oh that’s right they are too damn expensive and don’t go as fast as a home built PC for almost half the price. Listen MacHeads you can love Apple’s Products but don’t act like you are the best in the world when obviously you’re not and the real trolls are the people going after people who don’t suck Steve Jobs dick.

  33. #10: You’re an IT guy worried about job security.

I’m an IT guy, my job is to support Windows machines environment.

But, I love Apple products, I wish one day my company will get rid of all those stupid windows PC, save me a lot of headache!

  34. Well I do like that this article is written for Mac people by Mac people – not only do those “top 5 reasons” make non Mac fans look like idiots, but they’re certainly not mine.

First…I hate the Mac ads that used to run. Lets get some hip stoner actor and fat old business guy to duke it out…why are PC’s portrayed by businessman when 99% of gamers roll Windows?

Second…I hate the “iCult” people (yes i just made that up) much more that I hate the company itself. I love it when yet another mac advocate tells me that “you can’t photoshop on a windows based computer as well as you can on a Mac. Windows doesn’t have the graphics capability. Macs are made for photos and video editing. Pixar uses mac. Therefore you can’t animate on a Windows PC….etc…I even had one mactard tell me that “Windows is for work, Apple is for fun and videos, and if you wanna play games, you gotta go Alienware.” Wow. Alienware has a OS? Holy Sh*t I need to look into this.

Third…I’m sure it’s been mentioned, but the price point is ridiculous. It’s not envy, it’s pragmatism. Calling it envy would be like some guy thinking I envy his gold 22″ rims simply because I assume he’s an idiot for buying them.

Fourth…It’s just some of the cutesy stuff that gets on my nerves. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a nerd…I love virtually all things technological. But when I go to Apple’s website to see if they’re cooking up anything good, and they’re calling the iPad “magical”……..Avada Kedavra!!!! Nope. Can’t cast spells. Obviously I’m not too serious here…but the same page also caught my eye when it claimed that (what a bold lie) the iPad was the “best way to browse the web”. Honestly, WTF are your criteria for that claim? How could an underpowered (compared to what I use) touchscreen using 3G (forget the WiFi for a sec) possibly be an enjoyable experience, let alone “the best way”?

Fifth…I dunno. I don’t need 5 reasons, number 2 is the big one for me. Though…to get back to the lemming Mac fans…just because your iPod is sweet (and they are) and your iPhone is really handy (and as a Windows Mobile guy I do have app market jealousy), does NOT mean that Apple computers are are well priced, better at anything than Windows computers, or a ton more stable. Honestly, I really see a huge correlation between people that love an iPhone and people that become the most ardent Mac defenders. The same goes for the “Photo and Video editing and ‘fun'” quotients ascribed to Macs by their commercials. Only ONCE have I ever seen a customer base that paraphrases their products’ commercials more than the iCultists — the future retards in Idiocracy. Why drink Brawndo? It’s got electrolytes.
