Apple warns jailbreakers: We might brick your iPhone

“Despite last week’s ruling that jailbreaking the iPhone is legal, Apple is still warning consumers that doing so is a violation of the company’s terms of service and that it reserves the right to terminate service to jailbreakers,” Paul McDougall reports for InformationWeek.

“‘Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks the OS,’ Apple says in a bulletin on its support forum,” McDougall reports. “‘It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of the iOS is a violation of the Phone end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software,’ the note states.”

McDougall reports, “The note was published last month, prior to the Library of Congress’ ruling that jailbreaking is not a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and is therefore legal. But the fact that the warning remains on Apple’s support site indicates the company does not believe the ruling supercedes the terms of the iPhone EULA.”

  1. wondering why all those of you who want to hack and tinker and customize don’t just get an Android phone and knock yourself out. Why bother with the iPhone in the first place? I’ll never quite understand that logic.

But, I guess if you buy it at full retail and not subsidized by ATT, then you can do whatever you want. But, if ATT pays $400 of your iPhone in exchange for a 2 yr. contract, seems to me they sort of co-own the phone with you, at least until your contract is completed… or that’s the way it works with every cell phone I’ve bought before. Feel free to enlighten me…

  2. The moron factor on this site is incredible.
It may be legal to jb your iPhone, but it’s also legal for Apple to deny your warranty claim too.
And, I cannot wait to see who’s the first bitch to sue Apple when their jailbroken iPhone gets hacked and someone steals their sh*t.
Mark my words, it will happen. And it will likely be one of e brain surgeons posting here.
As for you other bozos griping about how stupid we all are for buying Apple and letting Steve “run our lives”, well, go enjoy your Windows and Droids. Both 2nd-tier products compared to anything in my Apple collection.

  3. What’s stupid about a lot of the comments is that what someone else does with their phone is simply no one else’s business.

If I have a coworker or neighbor who buys the same car as me and puts an F1 engine in it, why should I care? Answer: I wouldn’t, because it would have no effect on MY car or warranty.

  4. How I read it, if you take a jailbroken iPhone into an apple or AT&T store for service… It won’t happen.

Besides, if a jailbroken iphone has a problem… You reset it with iTunes and the jailbreak is gone.

Now if they start banning us from iTunes…. That’s where the library of congress ruling is going to start lawsuits.

And again, anyone pirating apps… Should be banned. Jailbreaking the iPhone to have settings that apple turns off, no.

Funny how people complain about verizon shutting down their phones abilities, but if apple does it…. It’s fine.

And also, it’s MY phone not yours. Why the hell do you care if I jailbreak it? Jealous?

Yes my iPhone 4 is now jailbroken!
Lockinfo is back, and sbsettings. I’ll probably fire up cydia once in a blue moon to check for updates, that’s it. Now the iPhone 4 is PERFECT.
If apple even had a rudimentary lockscreen info thing going… I wouldn’t jailbreak. But having a quicklook calendar and weather etc. Right there in the lockscreen is just perfect.

I like AT&T so no need to unlock.

  5. I’m probably wrong but doesn’t the article only say that Apple may terminate service, meaning Apple’s service/warranty work? It doesn’t say anything about cellular or data service.

  6. I am astounded at the number of commentors in this thread who actually believe MDN’s headline!

It’s a sad commentary on the decline in the Apple gene pool by the unwashed masses.

Some goofball buys an iPhone and suddenly they’re an authority on Apple’ policies.

Give me a troll anyday, they have more credibilty than many of those who site their Apple inventory, as though that makes them immune from stupidity!

Stomp your feet! Hold your breath till you’re blue! Threaten to leave the platform! Sue ’em till they rot!

Who cares! You’re just one more whiny voice in the chorus of crybabies!

Think! Before you hit submit. Read it again and again before you ask
yourself, do I sound desperate, whiny, or misinformed?

If you aren’t a member of MDN, then chances are you will hit the trifecta, just by making an appearence.

Anonymous posters, like Christians have absolution going for them. No matter how horrible your behavior, you get a do-over on Saturday.

At least with Christians they’re expected to pay with pennance, while the MDN’s catch of the day is left to rot and stink up the place.

MDN is squandering its goodwill among those of us who attempt to bring something meaningful to the discussion.

Where are all the familiar names of members who brought their A-game to the forum?

They’ve been displaced by a bunch of whiny illiterates, whose constant barrage of complaints does nothing more than to disprupt the flow of information!

The only thing worse is buying season tickets, whose seats are right next to the worst kind of fan; the one who hates his own team!

Too bad MDN can’t be a lttle more discreet in who they let in here.

If it were me, I would put a time limit on how long non-members could type, or better still instead of retyping captchas, how about making them provide antonyms for those words in the box?

It’s time to clean up the MDN gene pool!

  7. @Rob, the only thing begging is you. Apple go for it deny a repair service where the owner has to pay. They will find themselves paying out a lot more.

As I noted the auto mfg has to prove the after market accessory damaged the vehicle. They cannot state the warranty is void for simply adding some mod. If they can then they have a legit position on voiding the warranty.

Apple’s position is simple they want all the coin they can get while limiting functionality to what they see as fair and reasonable. IF jobs had some balls he would put AT&T in the place and get more done.

  8. <thinking outloud>

I know I sound arrogant and perhaps just as worse as the very people I’m attacking.

Who am I to complain, right? Arrogant prick!

I’m beginning to wonder that myself. I should just take my own advice and change the channel. But I won’t leave because aside from MDN’s predictability, and the endless parade of wannabes, there are some very clever people in this forum who I enjoy reading.

But, if you aren’t a member of MDN, and your first statement isn’t compelling, you haven’t got a chance.

Time spent here is time I could be devoting to my craft, or a nap, either of which sound good right now.

  9. I’m still standing on the wall to brick or not. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

Q: Wouldn’t it be prudent to wait until one sees whether the jail-broken phones still work after the next iOS update?

  10. First I for one do have a mdn account… The new update to the iPhone app has login problems and badges that never go away (read the newest reviews)

Steve…. My iPhone in no way looks like a windows or android phone. It’s always been jailbroken so rudimentary things like copy and paste could be used, not wait 2 years for apple to grace us with it. Everything except the mail changes, have been used in the jailbreak community since the beginning. I’ve had multitasking, folders, wallpaper etc.

I love how everyone here that bashes ANY changes to the iPhone.
Yet how many of you have ANY software on your macs that change ANY way OSX works… Or unlocks any hidden commands/toggles etc.
Congrats, you have a jailbroken Mac. But keep attacking those that want to do the exact same things to our iPhone.
Apple would be wise to just explain to AT&T and apple store employees, if an iPhone is jailbroken, tell the customer to bring the iPhone back after it’s not jailbroken and there is still a problem. They should not have to deal with a jailbroken iPhone… But there is nothing that a jailbreak does that harms the hardware. Every “bricked” iPhone that has come from a bad jailbreak, is almost always the fault of the user.

My uncle buys those bricked/failed jailbroken iPhones. He unbricks most of them and resales them… It’s almost always the same, some idiot with too much money decides to jailbreak and has no clue what they are doing and messes up. If they were to READ instructions, they could have avoided the brick. Or figured out that you can unbrick them 99% of the time.

    Jailbreaking is not for everyone.

  11. Fatmac.

When 4.1 hits, anyone that is jailbroken, will wait to update.
If a jailbreak is updated to work on 4.1 then most of us will restore our iPhone to 4.0.1. Unjailbreaking the iPhone and setting it back to stock.
Then we will download the update to ios4.1 and then re-jailbreak.
If there is any code in 4.1 that will not allow a jailbrocken iphone to update, smart jailbreakers won’t ever see it.
Always, always, unjailbreak your iPhone back to stock before you upgrade the ios.
It lessens any issues with an update.

I’m just suprised that it was released (jailbreak) with 4.1 in beta already… I was sure it would have been after 4.1

I normally wait a few weeks after a ios update is released before I update my iPhone anyway. I just did 4.0.1 before I jailbroke last night.
So people like me will see the problems, If any, with ios4.1 long before we click update.

My iphone rarely is plugged into my MacBook pro… I never add music and I just update the apps via wifi. (I have had the same 4k or so songs for years) so I never have to worry about updates to the ios really.

This will blow over, nothing will happen. Apple really can’t brick the phone without a huge lawsuit. An apple would lose that one…
Can you imagine apple remotely killing any Mac with something like handbrake installed… Cause you know it’s ONLY used for piracy.. So they are all evil, shut em down and brick all those pirates!!!!!1!

  12. Apple has absolute ZERO authority to brick anyones phone. That would be a crime, no question.

I own the fuckin device,, apple has no right to do anything to it after I buy it. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to be put on a deserted island forever. That kind of thinking is dangerous and detrimental to society.

This kind of headline makes me want to smash my iPad into pieces with a sledgehammer and mail the remains to that arrogant prick Steve Jobs.

  13. @Crazy4apple:
Jailbreaking my iphones has made them so much better… it’s like night and day with SBSettings, getting 3G access with SlingBox and now Facetime on 3G, just to name a couple quick things. I also love getting wifi use from my data plan, etc. There are so many reasons to jailbreak and so many things get better when you jailbreak and unlock.

When flash comes to the iphone it will probably be via a jailbreak app first.

As a former AT&T employee, I know that being tied to AT&T is not good for your company or customers. I’ve got nothing personal against the company, they just offer sub-par service at higher prices.
