Apple warns jailbreakers: We might brick your iPhone

“Despite last week’s ruling that jailbreaking the iPhone is legal, Apple is still warning consumers that doing so is a violation of the company’s terms of service and that it reserves the right to terminate service to jailbreakers,” Paul McDougall reports for InformationWeek.

“‘Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks the OS,’ Apple says in a bulletin on its support forum,” McDougall reports. “‘It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of the iOS is a violation of the Phone end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software,’ the note states.”

McDougall reports, “The note was published last month, prior to the Library of Congress’ ruling that jailbreaking is not a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and is therefore legal. But the fact that the warning remains on Apple’s support site indicates the company does not believe the ruling supercedes the terms of the iPhone EULA.”

  1. I jailbreak for one reason only, and that’s so I can use my phone as a WiFi hotspot. I pay for the phone, I pay for the data, I really don’t see what the problem is.

If this was considered “acceptable” fictionality and was available without jailbreaking, I wouldn’t, but who knows if that’s ever going to happen.

  2. Personally I jailbreak my iPhone. Mainly for one reason well 2. One so I can use mywi to use with my iPad rather then pay AT&T more money a month for the 3 or 4 times a month I use my iPad away from a wifi source.
The other reason so I can have themed icons and sounds. I use to use it for wallpaper to till ios 4.

I see why apple does it. But I don’t get terminating service. Just say hey we will not fix your phone if you jailbreak it.
Terminating service is just a little harsh.

  3. “Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software,’ the note states.”

Translation for the morons among us: YOU BREAK IT, THEY WON’T FIX IT.

    Service. Get it? Invalid warranty.

HTF does one derive from this , OMG, they’re gonna BRICK YOUR PHONE?!

    Idiots.

  4. @Reading Comprehension Much?!

sensationalist journalism much? i don’t get how they get “brick” out of that either. it’s just saying the same thing apple has always said about jailbreaking. as an ex-apple employee, this is pretty much exactly the wording we always used to say “screw your warranty” to people with jailbroken devices.

    crappy no-news story.

  5. Again folks it’s your phone to do whatever you want with it, however don’t come crying to Apple when your shit gets jacked up.

    Now off to jailbreak at my own risk I go ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  6. Too bad Apple didn’t give us iPhone 3G owners a warning about bricking our phone before we upgraded to iOS 4.01.

  7. I jailbreak for SBSettings and other tweaks and customizations…plus it’s just fun and interesting.

I’m not guilty of theft of service or piracy. I don’t expect Apple to warranty my iPhone based on my jailbreaking.

I really hope Apple doesn’t brick, and can’t imagine they ever would do so intentionally, but if they did, it wouldn’t be the end of the world for me, I’d just buy another iPhone and keep it stock.

  8. “…the fact that the warning remains on Apple’s support site indicates the company does not believe the ruling supercedes the terms of the iPhone EULA.”

    Well a-DUH!!!

Thank goodness for licensing and contract law.

As we all knew from the beginning, making jailbreaking ‘legal’ was meaningless and pointless.

What exactly was the point supposed to be in the first place? To stop the jails from being filled up with iPhone jailbreakers? To stop all the frivolous lawsuits by Apple against its users? To force all cell phones to become wide open hell holes of crapware and malware?

  9. First Apple requires us to use inferior ATT “service” and then adds insult to injury by threatening to turn off our phone if we attempt to make it work with a mobile phone company that provides a reliable signal.

And, on top of that, Apple’s newest phone has some serious problems with the antenna – bad design that makes it difficult to use.

And, don’t say I don’t have an iPhone – I have two of them. And don’t say I’m a troll of some kind. I’m not. I’m a long time Apple customer growing less faithful every day to the Steve Jobs world class arrogance

  10. “Not only does this elevate to the root, giving you complete control of the iPhone, but it breaks out of the sandbox,” said Miller in an interview Monday, referring to the isolation technology designed to block rogue code from escaping the mobile Safari browser.

“There’s no shell on the iPhone, so [comex] had to do all that himself to get control,” Miller continued. “He elevated to root, turned off all code signing, broke out of the sandbox…all in the payload of the exploit.

“And it works every time. Not just a few times out of a hundred. But every time.”

  11. Hea Derek,

Just heard old jeremiah grossman on a podcast today talk about the coming malware and exploit hits on OS X with increased market share. He said just about the same as I said, Its coming and it will hit successfully into the OS X community.

Yes, when the true pros want to hit they will. They haven’t yet. You have only seen light weight kid stuff so far. You fanboys are clueless that you vulnerable with OS X.

  12. I jailbroke my phone and I will take my chances but Apple shouldn’t purposely harm the users phone. They can fix the hole that was exploited, thats the way the game is played but anything else is too much. A potential lawsuit after last weeks ruling would surely be brought. Apple is now top dog and everyone knows that that means target. So, they need to tread lightly. Anyway, it isn’t harming them, hell they have benefited from it. It is AT&T who it harms when the jailbreak allows unlocking so other carriers can be used as well as other features can be enabled. BTW Facetime works well over 3G, but all you with your heads us Steve’s ass wouldn’t know that.
