JP Morgan: Apple took the right steps with iPhone 4

“If Steve Jobs was looking to redeem the iPhone 4 at Apple Inc.’s Friday press conference, it might have worked,” John Shmuel reports for The Financial Post.

“JP Morgan put out a note Monday morning that said the company’s response to weak network signals — something that afflicts the iPhone 4 if the device is held a certain way — was a solid first step,” Shmuel reports. “pple said it would offer refunds to anyone dissatisfied with their purchase, as well as providing complimentary phone cases to anyone who bought a new iPhone.”

Shmuel reports, “But JP Morgan also added that it didn’t expect the debate about the iPhone’s antenna problems to subside anytime soon. It pointed out that “media-driven” hype was lessening, but that the company had a long way to go to repair its image… Price target for Apple was maintained at $390.00, while an overweight [rating] did not change either.”

Listen to the press conference. FULL refund. NO restocking charge. Even the ATT contract will be refunded. No one loses. Great deal for all.

For those that want to keep their phone they get a free case. I kinda like those rubber bumpers (have not seen one in person, though) what a great way to identify yours with a color.

    Win-win for all.

  2. @Rike,

Pay attention if you’re able. I was making the point that refund is always an option with Apple as well as most other device manufacturers. All the chatter about recall is absurd when refund is baked in.

  3. Do people not read their receipts? All iPhones have always had a 30 day return period (since the original iPhone in 2007). Also, there has NEVER been a restocking fee for iPhones, because in most cases they open the box for you in the store to activate the phone!

The media is making it sound like Apple is extending the return period and waiving the restocking fee when they’re actually just reminding customers of their policies which are clearly printed on their receipts.

Unfortunately, humans are simple, pea-brained, stupid creatures and will buy anything that they are told by the so-called “media”…

  5. NEWS. Droid X is now reporting screen flicker and banding problems of unknown impact. You can google it and read lots:

    Google Droid X flicker banding

But the harsh treatment given to Apple is not being, so far anyway, meted out to Motorola. Listen to this one tech blogger:

“This is being handled in the right way it seems. There’s a fault on the phone, you take it back to the store and get a replacement as soon as stock is available. You can do that when the fault is only on a small percentage of your phones and not an issue with all of them like Apple is facing.

Still, Motorola is not doing itself any favors shipping phones with a screen problem, but now was probably the best time for such an issue to happen as so much attention is on iPhone 4.”

OK. Taking it back to the store” is the “right way” to handle an issue like this, but Apple didn’t let you “take it back”? WRONG

Also, I’d rather have a phone with a sensitive spot and an easy solution (iPhone 4) than an unusable brick with no replacement in sight until weeks from now. How angry would you be?

Finally that comment about “now is a good time to have an embarrassing failure, because Apple is in the limelight” is so revealing. The Droid techies know that no phone is perfect and are glad the iPhone’s only minor flaw is hogging the media’s pea-sized attention span.

  6. 390 dollars? That’s crazy!
I backed up the truck on Apple’s stock 2 days ago before the earnings call. Buying Apple on weakness is always right and buying Apple before earnings is also always right. If you bet on something, bet on Apple!

Can’t wait for the new iPod Touch!
