Apple releases iOS 4.0.1, iOS 3.2.1 for iPad

Apple today released iOS 4.0.1.

Apple’s release note for iOS 4.0.1 state that the update “improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display.”

Get the update via iTunes now (unless you’re running 4.1 beta, in which case 4.0.1 won’t show up, of course).

Apple also released iOS 3.2.1 for iPad which addresses a number of issues, including:
• Improved Wi-Fi connectivity
• Fixed an issue that could prevent copy and paste of single-page PDF attachments in Mail
• Addressed an issue that could cause video playback to freeze
• Improved reliability of video-out when using iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter
• Added Bing as an option for Safari’s search field

Get the update via iTunes now.

Have you tried resetting your network settings? I read that works. Read that the cause of the proximity sensor problem is syncing an older iphone backup to the iphone 4. My iphone doesn’t have the problem but my wife’s did. I backed up her 3g and restored it to her 4 but i didn’t restore my old phone to the 4. worth a shot.

  2. Nope, does not fix the antenna issue for me completely, the phone responds much quicker to signal changes and now I have constantly 1-3 bars, before I had 3-4 bars.

But, …if I have 1-2 bars I can still make a pretty good call with no problem if I do NOT use the death grip. Covering the left bottom side still drops the call, but it is more random now, not as consistent as it was before.

Have to test it more in other locations and see what happens.

  3. While anandtech praises the new firmware, it also states that “While the software update obviously does not and cannot address the design of the antenna itself – or make the drop from holding the phone any less – it does change the way the issue is perceived among users. The result is that most iPhone users will see fewer bars disappear when they hold the iPhone 4 in a bare hand.”

    It’s still a wait and see (= tomorrow) .

  4. 3.2.1 seems to have dramatically improved my wi-fi reception on my iPad. The iPad was previously useless when I was sitting on my deck trying to surf the net on a nice summer day. Now I get a strong signal and it’s as snappy as it is indoors. Can’t wait so see if it has improved reception in my concrete cubicle at the university where I work.

  5. This is funny. You think that software update fixes signal drop problem? Apple is arrogant not to admit hardware design flaw. We will see a big recall soon. I am si fed up with all damn Apple today. No more comment.

  6. Interestingly enough, what I remember back in the day when GSM first came around (circa 1997) they would say that if you had even one bar that the call quality was as good as if you had a full 5 bars. And it was true! I’m wondering if they’ve gone back to a signal strength meter that represents that sort of measurement?

  7. Now my phone only drops from three bars to one when I hold my phone “incorrectly!”

Before the update, it would drop from five bars down to just one when I held it “incorrectly.”

….but my lowest bar is bigger now, so I must be getting a better signal when I only have one bar – right?!?!?!?

I feel much better now! Thanks Apple!!!

  8. It appears a number of people are confusing the “bars” problem, fixed today by software, with the reported loss of ACTUAL signals problem, fixed with a “hardware” fix of new coatings now being applied to the production runs in China. (If you have a iPhone in your hands today, you do not have the hardware fix.)

These two problems are related, but today’s fix only solves one of the two (real or perceived) problems.

  9. i’m pretty sure that this update broke my 4th and 5th bars.

neither one have appeared since installing the update. i’ve been monitoring the bars pretty closely for most of the day.

ahhhh…..so the signal issue ISN’T apple’s fault!!! it’s been AT&T;’s fault ALL ALONG!!

we can now resume bashing AT&T;and get off apple’s back again!

  10. if the problem wasnt ATT or carriers we would have 5 bar signals everywhere wouldnt we?? what?? iphone HARDWARE is great in someplaces and “flawed” in others ?? this is a non issue people please shut up allready move on!!

  11. @fixed

its not a none issue at all and its not just an ATT fault, in the UK we have multiple networks with it now.

The phone has reception until you hold it and then it used to slowly take all the bars off and drop signal altogether. Following the update it now stays at 1 bar if you ‘hold it the wrong way’ although if you do a speed test it downloads/uploads nothing.

Thats on orange and o2 and i know of people on vodafone who are having the same problems too. Incidentally the 3gs on both networks works fine and holding it some place else on the iphone 4 gets reception fine. I get great coverage where i am and with any other phone even the 3gs but the iPhone 4 has the problem.

If you dont want a case on it (and why should you have to) then anytime you hold it in a certain way it does it.

Oh and it does have an issue with the proximity sensor too on the iPhone 4 – it pressed numbers and hangs up whilst on the phone.

Why do people get so defensive about apple stuff, at the end of the day they have a fault and i’m confident they’ll fix it. If they say anyone buying a new one wont have the issue then the phone can go back as faulty as per the law in the UK and i’ll order a new one without the problem.

For something that costs so much money as the iPhone it should work perfectly and if you arent having a problem then good for you, but some of us clearly are and its not unreasonable to expect Apple to fix it.

It doesnt mean we dont like the phone or we hate apple it just means we want it fixing.

  12. we’ve all had crappy signals from AT&T for years, and iphones with crappy reception, and it has been covered up by apple for years!!!

our reception has always been horrible, we just didn’t know it.

MDN word of the day: COLLUSION

  13. What ? No fix for the iPad’s sluggish performance which requires a reboot to fix, or the low memory problems etc… which are reported to Apple every time I sync my iPad ?
