Ahead of the release of iOS 4, Apple’s iTunes Store is exhibiting extreme sluggishness and is, at time, virtually unresponsive.
MacDailyNews Note: iOS 4 is now available via iTunes as of 1pm EDT.
Right now, you can still get through to display pages, but the performance is definitely suboptimal, to use some NASA-speak.
It’s like MacDailyNews during a Steve Jobs’ keynote (except we don’t have $40+ billion in the bank to pay for bandwidth during high-capacity events).
We’ve been trying without success to download the Pandora update for the past 15 minutes.
Millions of clicks per second on the “Check for Update” button can’t be good for optimal iTunes Store performance.
To everyone who’s looking forward to upgrading to iOS 4 today, we wish you the best of luck!
[UPDATE: 2:15pm EDT: iTunes Store seems to be more responsive now. We have successfully downloaded a few apps and upgraded an old iPhone 3G to iOS 4. (Yes, we got hit with a traffic spike around 1pm EDT, too.)]
Why wait for 1pm EST? Everybody will download at the same time. I would let users download since 8 am EST.
When is that NC data center going to be up and running? hopefully before ios5
10:05:25, download of iOS4 began for me.
This should be interesting…..
I backed up my 3GS before downloading, just in case there’s some iKryptonite in the new OS…..
As of right now, iOS 4 is not up but iTunes has updated their terms of service.
I was one of those millions of clicks on the update button in iTunes. My download started at 1:06 ET and is about 1/3 done. In 5 – 10 minutes, I will have a new iPhone! Cool!
I think NC data center is up and that’s why iTunes is so slow, after all everything down south is slower.
I live in RTP and it’s so hot right now, I wish I was in FL
Downloaded fine at 10:01am pacific time, no sluggishness noticed at all on the itunes store.
Aaaargh!
Error code!
Update can’t be completed!
This is my Karma for voting GOP in 2000!
iOS4 downloaded in 4 minutes for me. No trouble at all.
I am running the iOS 4 GM seed and was lucky enough to snag the Pandora update before Apple’s servers got hammered. I’m listening to pandora in the background right now while also typing this from my iPhone

Download began for me at 1:09 EST. It’s gonna take 55 minutes. Ahrr. I started with iPhone. Then will update iPad.
Download. Installed. No problem.
That’s a little like the pot calling the kettle black. MDN is the site that is sluggish and unresponsive today.
Compared to MDN, the iTunes store is FLYING!
Downloaded at 1:15 EST with no problems. On a side note, MDN loaded extremely slow. iTunes was zippy

Sames as Flackman
Dowoading to iTunes on Verizon 3G to my laptop (on the road in flyover country). I’m getting normal speeds.
DL’s just fine, no sluggishness whatsoever. Here in Boston
As to the Fiasco @ the WWDC keynote, Apple should have selected a channel with a closed network for the demo & let the liveblogs share the other channels on a separate Internet line. It amazes me Apple overlooked something that simple.
Universities all over handle tens of thousands of simultaneous connections in a relatively small area every day with no problem. And it happened in San Francisco, of all places.
@Jeph
This is probably bad karma for voting democrat in 08
Just updated my old 3G without a delay whatsoever.
Next up, my 3GS.
Not as sluggish as MDN website is.
Got it without any kind of problem at all! I’ll enjoy it for a short bit before my iPhone 4 Ships…
That’s right AT&T;, I’m going to take you to the bank on the 3G data for the bait and switch you pulled with the iPad.
Fast response and complete download without a hassle here in Orlando. Nice update!
I hit download and it said 3 hours.. then i stopped after 27MB and restarted and it finished in 13 minutes
Started to download at 1:20 pm it’s 1:54 and I have 38 minutes remaining. Ugh!!
