Apple’s iPhone 4 to be unlocked in Canada

Invisible Shield for Apple iPhone 4!“Canadian users of Apple’s new iPhone 4 will have the option to move freely from one wireless provider to another,” The Canadian Press reports. “Consumers will be able to buy the new iPhone from Apple without a long-term contract, which would allow them to migrate to the wireless provider of their choice.”

“Apple’s website says the new iPhone 4 works with micro-SIM cards that are used by carriers around the world, meaning that international travellers could use their phones with providers in other countries,” The Canadian Press reports. “The new iPhone will also sold by major Canadian carriers including Rogers, Telus and Bell.”

MacDailyNews Take: Multiple carriers in one country. What a concept.

The Canadian Press reports, “The iPhone 4 is due to be released June 24 in the United States and by the end of July in Canada.”

    REITERATION:

    As@ken1w pointed out:

THE COST OF A NO-CONTRACT iPhone is MASSIVE: “a $99 subsidized U.S. iPhone 3GS costs $549 if it is not tied to a service in Canada.”

Conclusion: What the US needs is MULTIPLE CARRIERS for the iPhone. US customers can already buy no-contract iPhones at high prices if they choose. That’s nothing new.

  2. @Troy
Not even close, we get pretty much the same price as the states, sometimes it’s about $30 more.

    Either way, I love it up here, 3 major networks with the iPhone. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  3. Multiple carriers with exactly the same pricing which is pretty much higher than anywhere else in the world. Yeah, real lucky.

there are a handful of phone companies, you expect them to … compete? and drive down margins? lol

  4. Finally!! I’ll definitely be checking out the new iPhone4 and the cost of buying out the remaining year of my 3G contract with Rogers. I’d rather pay a lump sum up front for the iPhone and then choose a package/provider that fits my usage. Right now I pay a ton for everything “unlimited” under Roger’s required basic 3yr/$2700CDN subsidy plan, with everything “unlimited” except for the features I actually need … yup, they seem to charge me extra for those.

Unlimited “free” local calling weekdays from 9pm to 5am. What a lark! Thank god for Skype and TruPhone or I’d be broke.

  5. After less than a year with Fido, I was able to tailor my plan from the “no choice” iPhone only plan @ 95$ a month to a 6 gigs of data plan for 72$. I don’t see why contracts get people acting so irrational, especially if you can pick and choose your plan because you can bring in your own phone. Do people change their minds so often that a two three year contract is such an intolerable burden?
