“Google is phasing out the internal use of Microsoft’s ubiquitous Windows operating system because of security concerns, according to several Google employees,” David Gelles and Richard Waters report for The Financial Times.
“The directive to move to other operating systems began in earnest in January, after Google’s Chinese operations were hacked, and could effectively end the use of Windows at Google, which employs more than 10,000 workers internationally,” Gelles and Waters report. “‘We’re not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort,’ said one Google employee. ‘Many people have been moved away from [Windows] PCs, mostly towards Mac OS, following the China hacking attacks,’ said another.”
Gelles and Waters report, “New hires are now given the option of using Apple’s Mac computers or PCs running the Linux operating system.”
MacDailyNews Take: Why limit employees to PCs running Linux when Macs can run Linux, too (not to mention Microsoft’s horrid Windows)? Smart employers offer employees the world’s only unlimited personal computers, Apple Macs, which can run Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows natively and/or via fast virtualization. Apple Macs run the world’s largest software library.
Gelles and Waters report, “The move created mild discontent among some Google employees, appreciative of the choice in operating systems granted to them – an unusual feature in large companies. But many employees were relieved they could still use Macs and Linux. ‘It would have made more people upset if they banned Macs rather than Windows,’ he added.”
MacDailyNews Take: No, ya think?

“Why are the so-called geniuses at Google using the world’s worst browser? If you’re going to test for IE, test the POS in a safe, segregated manner; don’t use it for business.” – MacDailyNews Take, January 15, 2010

I have used iMac for 3 years now, but why on earth would I buy a Mac if I intended to run Linux?? Makes no sense, I bought a Mac for the Mac OS, I might as well buy a cheap PC and save some bucks if I just wanted to run Linux. I don’t see the advantage of running a Mac when using Linux.
Steve Jobs had a little coffee with someone from Google, lately… I heard it was an eminence. It always worth having such good advertising for free, just for the price of a cup of cappuccino…
So Google switches their desktops to Apple. Then the rest of the world follows. Wouldn’t this just force the hand of hackers and ne’er do well’s to turn their focus to Macs and reduce what was a strength of Apple to a net/net with the pc’s? I am sure the Mac is still more secure than the Swiss cheese that is Microsoft, but where there’s a will there is always a way.
And all this will happen right after I get my first Mac. Murphy is alive and well.
I agree with studeabaker. Why spend more money on a Mac unless you just want a beautiful iMac on your desktop vs a ugly PEECEE. Otherwise your paying for an OS you wont use. If i wanted to use linux i would get a decent PC. It just makes since.
Now why i would use linux over mac i dont know why anyone would but anyway
What do they use for their server farms? Anyone know?
All of their servers are Linux. I believe it is modified Ubuntu they are running. As I understand it most of their engineers use Linux on the desktop as it is.
I don’t know why they even bother with Mac outside of the nice case. Theres nothing about it worth paying for over Linux especially in a software engineering company. Maybe just maybe I could see home users but thats a very slim case and its quickly disappearing.
Get over yourselfs and as for the poster saying OSX is Linux core do some research,
OSX has a UNIX BASE CORE, not linux, and contrary to popular belif they are competly diffrent from one another.
Who the hell let all the Apple TROLL haters out today, on top of being uneducated and whinney the only thing they are good for is a laugh.
@@allmachaters
yourselfs = yourselves
belif = belief
completly = completely
whinney = whiny
I won’t bother with your sentence structure, but at least you spelled uneducated correctly.
“Does Google know that OS 10.7 is the end of the line for Mac?”
“Amen. The Mac is dead. If it ain’t mobile, Cupertino couldn’t care less. Enjoy your Macs while you can.”
Yeah, that’s right. Who cares that Mac sales keep rising quarter after quarter? Who cares that Apple profits from them handsomely?
Macs will be discontinued because apparently Steve Jobs has turned into a moron.
Oh wait, or are you two clowns the morons?
Nah… Sorry, I shouldn’t make fun of you. I’m sure you’re perfectly aware that you’re bullshitting and don’t even agree with your own comments, but since you’re being paid to bullshit, you don’t really have a choice in the matter, do you?
The truth is that your employer is scared shitless of Apple because:
A. They just blew past Microsoft(which likely is your employer).
And B, Macs are beginning to seriously displace PCs.
So out comes the FUD that Apple is discontinuing Macs for no good reason, in an attempt to drive down their share price and stem the tide of switchers.
Luckily, FUD is really no longer a problem for Apple, because they’ve become too big for it to stick to them anymore. Well… Maybe it’s a problem for you. Send me a postcard from the unemployment line, eh?
Aaaahahahah!
And where would I store my 300+GB (and growing) of iTunes library if not on a Mac?
in the cloud…
don’t discount desktop macs as we know today going away…
remember the floppy disk…
the iPad is Steve’s ultimate vision for computing for us all
“don’t discount desktop macs as we know today going away…”
Why not?
It’s completely stupid from every standpoint and makes no sense. Why shouldn’t it be discounted?
