Looks like Apple has ended their iconic ‘Get a Mac’ campaign

HOT Apple Computers + FREE Shipping“Last month, actor Justin Long revealed that Apple’s long-running ‘Get a Mac’ ad campaign, in which he appeared as the ‘Mac’ character, appeared to have been discontinued,” Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors. “The last set of ‘Get a Mac’ commercials had been released in October 2009.”

“It now appears that Apple has finally pulled the ‘Get a Mac’ campaign from its site, redirecting the page to an expanded ‘Why You’ll Love a Mac’ page highlighting five key marketing points for Macs in comparison to PCs: Better Hardware, Better Software, Better OS, Better Support, and It’s Compatible,” Slivka reports. “Apple’s extensive gallery of ‘Get a Mac’ ads has also been removed from the site, with the URL similarly redirecting to the ‘Why You’ll Love a Mac’ page.”

  1. The Get a Mac campaign was played out, as happens with all ad campaigns.

There’s also the issue that nothing terribly interesting has happened with Macs in a *LONG* time. There’s been nothing but small, incremental stuff since the Intel switch and debut of Leopard. Macs are useful, but very staid and boring compared to the rest of Apple’s product line.

I’m really, really, really waiting and hoping for the moment when the iPhone OS gets reunified and folded back into desktop OS X and Macs. I can’t believe this hasn’t already been done in Apple’s labs, with the main question being implementation and/or waiting for component costs to come down.

The time for the next big Mac ad push will be when iPhone/iPad apps are runnable also as Mac desktop applications–or, even better, when developers will be able to drop fat binary combo Mac/iPhone/iPad apps that adjust to whichever device they are running on.

  2. Little off topic here, but what stung me the most about the I/O was wireless sync. I’ve wanted that for so long. Even tho I know Apple has been working on this solution, it sux that Giggle threw it out there first.

IMHO, it’s time iTunes gets EASIER to use. Tired of all the sync artist, playlist, genre, etc. Click, click, click. Gimmie touch, touch, touch…and no cord.

Not baggin’. Luv muh iTunes, but it is starting to feel bloated.

Sorry in advance for being off topic.

  3. Those commercials will go down in ad history as one of the most effective and successful campaigns ever. I wish Apple would leave them up for posterity…

  4. The new Apple ad strategy is of course to focus on the new markets, in which they happen to be the leaders.

Of course for we the Techno Cognoscenti, the Mac remains the center of the universe. But clearly Apple remain, as ever, the center of the user friendliness universe, and the brightest stars at the moment are hand-held touch devices for the masses, stuff that has no accessible CLI, minimal geek, maximum elegant usability.

Just keep in mind that the source of all that wonderful touchable GUI-ness is Mac OS X.

The Mac remains on the market share incline versus the dross dreck. But Apple’s biggest profits are in the new offshoot tech.

  5. @They worked
I certainly hope you are attempting satire. If not, ask Dell and HP about market share compared to profit margins on products sold: huge difference.

  6. “Catapulted Mac’s market share all the way to 9%! Wow. Just wow.”

Heh… another one who doesn’t understand the difference between huge profits and market share. Just ask Dell how that large market share and the profits that come with it. Oh wait… there aren’t any profits!

Apple is doing it right, and it just burns your ass…

  7. They should do one more Mac and PC commercial. In this one, Mac and PC say their usual, “Hello – I’m a Mac – and I’m a PC” lines. A new guy named “iPad” joins them (cast as an younger actor). I’m not going to write the script here, but the point of the commercial is that whether you use a Mac or a PC, having an iPad around will make things more fun and interesting. End with iPad shaking hands with Mac and PC, and then Mac and PC shaking hands. Fade to image of an iPad (instead of a Mac) with usual while background…

At this point (after years of Windows XP and the Windows Vista fiasco), people who are still using Windows are likely to keep using Windows, at least for a while longer. That’s perfectly fine with Apple, if they buy iPods, iPhones, and now iPad to go with their “PC.” I think this final commercial can close the series by carrying that message. “Mac” guy and “PC” guy may still be friendly rivals, but they both think their new friend “iPad” is cool.

  8. re this part: ‘Why You’ll Love a Mac’ page highlighting five key marketing points for Macs in comparison to PCs: Better Hardware, Better Software, Better OS, Better Support, and It’s Compatible,”

It’s long overdue for Apple to have a TV Commercial showing this Instead of just written on the web page. Advertising with THAT info is what it’s going to take to break into higher user % numbers. But people who have only $300 to spend on a computer will still buy a PC. Though I have given 5 to 8 year old previously loved Macs to poorer friends (who had been using newer than 5 yr old PCs) and they said “This old Mac is so much FASTER than my PC!”

  9. I might add, some obnoxious people I know deserve to use PC’s I never try to switch them when they get snippy with me about Macs, just say “It seems your PC is a good match for you.” ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  10. Regarding the latest ad campaign from them.

    # It’s designed to be a better computer
    – If you look at high-end Sony Vaio, or Toshiba, Alienware laptops, you’ll realize that these computers are way better than the Mac offerings, both in features and design. Blue-ray playback, slim design, various colors, battery life etc…

    # It comes with software you’ll love to use
    – Music playback, watching movies, and office applications are just a small part of everydays work. Real work is normally done in programs that are not even available on MACs, like AutoCAD, Photoshop (ok, this ones available – but just a point), Sony Vegas, and many different specific engineering or Line-of-business apps.!

    # It comes with the world’s most advanced OS
    – Rubbish! What makes an advanced OS? Stability? UI? Unix? There are many things, such as long support, application backword compatibility, support across multiple hardware/platforms, etc. I think Windows does well in all areas.

    # It comes with award-winning support
    – Really? How long does it take for Apple to dish out a patch? What about transparency in the bugs discovered? I think Microsoft does better.

    # It runs Office and works with your existing PC files
    – You still have to buy Office to get full compatibility or the stripped down Office which they call iWork. Might as well buy a Windows version.

    # It’s compatible with your stuff
    – Are you sure its compatible with my PC games? PC Software? or even your own existing OS? Oh wait, what about all those printers, China made devices, PCI data acquistion cards etc?

    # It doesn’t get PC viruses
    – Right it get MAC iVirus. Even PCs nowadays don’t get PC viruses! Most networks are fully protected by antivirus gateways in many organization such as Symantec Enterprise Endpoint or Microsoft ForeFront Enterprise Security. In fact, you cant even download PC virus from free email accounts such as Yahoo or Hotmail, since they have a built in email scanner. Also, antivirus softwares are cheap! If you buy a PC + antivirus subscription for 10 years, still cheaper than a Mac!, or you can just go free… as MAC users think their little systems are free from malware without knowing there’s one on their system right now.

    # It’s loaded with the latest technology
    – Blu-ray disc anyone? Core i7 – how long did it take them to have it? Light-scribe? Direct X11? Nvidia Fermi?

    # It runs Windows and Windows applications
    – Oh yes, it took them like, forever to have a supported Boot Camp with drivers for running Windows 7? Hmmm… better yet just buy a Windows 7 equip laptop instead.
