Google: Android created to try to stop ‘draconian’ Apple-dominated future

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“Android was created precisely to prevent the kind of mobile future Apple is trying to make, Google said in its day 2 I/O conference keynote,” Electronista reports.

“The company’s Vic Gundotra said Android was necessary as, without it, too much control would be put into the hands of Steve Jobs and the iPhone platform,” Electronista reports. “Gundotra didn’t mention Jobs by name but left little mystery that he was being blamed for creating a dystopic mobile environment not unlike the ‘1984’ Apple once criticized. ‘If we did not act, we faced a draconian future where one man, one phone, one carrier was the future,’ he said. ‘That’s a future we don’t want.'”

MacDailyNews Take: Because then we wouldn’t be able to run our ads on it; especially as mobile device users seem predisposed to chose to use dedicated apps over random Web search.

Electronista reports, “Direct jabs at Apple were also strewn throughout the keynote, pointing out either policy or technical limitations in the iPhone and iPad that Android 2.2 would overcome.”

MacDailyNews Take: We’ve used Android phones. They’re all poor imitations of an iPhone. Using an Android phone after you’ve used an iPhone is both frustrating and humorous. The day Apple flips the switch on Verizon, is the day Google dreads. In countries where iPhone is available on multiple carriers, people don’t settle for Android-based fake iPhones.

Remember when people thought Google was innovative?

  1. I don’t get it. No one is forcing you to buy an iPhone…there are other smart phones out there besides Apple. If people are not forced and for sure some are forced to buy others like RIM, then if Apple sells more, that simply means most people like it best whether it be based on price, capabilities, style or whatever.

What is this 1984 shit???? That would mean if Google is saying no to Apple, doesn’t that mean Yes?

  2. Competition is good. Let it reign. We’ll see just how well Google does with its quarterly dot x updates. Quarterly? Heck, me bad, how about monthly. If you’re a developer I wish you all the best developing on a platform that changes every time you sneeze.

And oh yeah, what about that Flash bullshit? Last week it was Flash will be ubiquitous. It will be available everywhere on every mobile device. Why? Because Apple is too restrictive. Today, the real truth comes out! Flash will only be available if you’re running Android v2.2. And what do you get with all that flash? A 3 hour battery life.

Jobs was right, Flash is a joke and the sooner we get rid of it the better. As for Jobs running the show, he’s made a few mistakes, like stalling on AppleTV and not bringing iTunes to the web sooner, but overall the guy has done remarkably well.

I don’t expect Apple to fall flat on its face with these announcements, after all G is just emulating and competition will make everything better.

  3. Apple is succeeding by creating brilliant new concepts for products that delight the user and improve their lives. Both Google and microsoft owe their success to stealing the work of others and abusing their market share position.

Who do you want designing your future devices?

“This story doesn’t fit the timeline, as Matt Drance points out here”

It’s a very good point. However, who knows how long Apple was working on iPhone before its release? That then raises some awkward questions about Schmidt:

“Mr. Schmidt was careful to recuse himself from portions of board meetings dealing with overlapping areas of competition, but if the raison d’être of Android was to stop Apple from controlling the mobile world, there could be questions about his role on Apple’s board while that development was going on.”

But personally I think it’s just a matter of Vic Gundotra being slimy and dishonest. Presumably, that’s all part of “Do no Evil” and “openness”.

  5. Google…. Hypocrites…

Apple isn’t perfect either… but Google… get off your high horse…

Apple could allow Adobe to run Flash… on the condition that Adobe built apps Admit they are the resource hogs that they are… or the cause of crashing (much as FireFox apologizes and attempts to reboot the browser to the last state)

  6. Adobe better be careful dealing with the “Don’t be Evil” company. 2 years ago their CEO was sitting on Apple board learning Apple’s mobile strategy and quietly implementing it for his own company. Now he is trashing Apple publicly. And that Vic Gundotra who probably made tons of $$$$ from the “Evil Empire” stock who was copying Apple’s OS ideas is talking about Openness for the consumer. Did he ever tell that to Bill Gates or Steve Ballmer during his tenure at Microsoft? Google is acting like they care about developers and consumers. All they are doing is what Bill Gates did to Apple in the 80s. Google will probably copy Adobe’s ideas and then backstab them later. And yes, Flash does crash the Macs. And iPhone is much better product the any Android phones out there. Buy one, get one free. Its like driving a Honda instead of a BMW.

  7. Does anyone else worry about the fact that Google knows that 1 billion turn-by-turn directions we made with Android phones in 6 months? Is it a stretch to assume they know which phone made each turn and therefore where each Android user was going? Ya, and Apple is 1984’s big brother.
