Steam is now available for the Mac.
Until today. Steam had been a service exclusively for Widows PC sufferers since it launched in 2004. Now it’s available for Apple’s superior Mac!
Also, Steam’s Portal is free from today until May 24th.
More info and download link here.
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers too numerous to mention individually for the heads up.]
oh common! i sent it in! haha. can wait to get home and download it!
Me likes free games.
Got it!! downloading Portal right now!
snooze
does the white macbook have the right specs to play steam games?
Fantastic!
Good news indeed
Good thing there’s a value to release that steam…
yep. downloading now. wonder what their mac downloads are for today…
hope they publish the 1st week DL count.
Servers must be getting slammed. Portal suspended itself during my download and there it now sits, half complete and going nowhere.
“Widows PC sufferers”…
Look, their husbands are dead. Give em a break, would ya?
Downloaded Steam – no Mac demos – limited Mac games. Guess it’s a start. Not really a huge gamer at all. But do see the value in recognition by the gaming world that 26 years later the Mac is being viewed as a viable gaming platform.
Now where is MIST 2010?!?
Got it… is anyone else finding it kinda buggy?
Eh, it crashed so I restarted and it seems to be a lot better now. The UI doesn’t seem totally polished, though. But all in all, pretty decent for a first release.
I’m disappointed that except for portal none of the other Valve titles seem to be available yet…
I just tried downloading Portal, only to be told that the Steam servers are too busy. Looks like there’s been some pent up demand for serious Mac games.
I downloaded Portal, before the servers got too busy. There are actually several games that I bought on Steam for Windows that I now have “free” Mac versions of, which is fantastic.
@ Jacob: Valve have said they are going to release one per week, every Wednesday. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
Crashed on initial start.
Keeps pausing my download of portal.
None of my previous steam games are Mac compatible-which is a bummer since I really want to play xcom again.
It’s nice they did this, I can only hope they greatly improve it since I am not to impressed with them so far.
Steam seems ill-prepared for the pent-up gaming demand. I successfully got 993kb of Portal. I’ll give it a couple days.
seems pretty buggy. multiple crashes and hangs. just relaunched it after it quit, now it’s downloading an update. maybe it will improve?
I’m a bit confused about the Steam setup and please pardon my ignorance.
1. Do you have to be online to play Steam games?
2. Why do you have to login into their website?
3. Is the login just for registration and then you can play offline or do you have to be logged in and information is then passed onto Steam?
4. Do you have to be a part of the Steam community to play games?
Again, I’m a bit ignorant with this setup and I haven’t been able to answer these question via the net. All I want to do is play some games, I haven’t got the time to start playing against others on the net and just want single player modes and nothing else.
steam keeps crashing for me, also, had portal downloading while I was away during the day, came back – crash
i have to say – so what ?
that portal game is utter dross
@iworker
Yeah, Steam is a mixed blessing. It’s nice we’re getting those games for the Mac, but the restrictions are a pain. If you don’t have Internet access for some reason, you’re SOL.
I have a full review on my site, with lots of screenshots.

Don’t buy games on Steam it’s a Wall Gaeded DRM-heaven.
I’m still in the dark. I don’t mind downloading games but do I have to be online to play their games and can I just play in single-player mode? Likewise do I have to login to play a game I’ve already paid for and downloaded? Jim, you might want to answer this because I read your review and these points weren’t touched on. Thanks!
