Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune, “When a customer asked last week ‘will the iPad 3G models still ship on time as planned (end of April) in the US, if I order one today? Or will the 3G US orders be postponed as well?’ Jobs’ one-word answer, e-mailed from his iPhone, was a terse ‘Yes.'”
“Early this morning, we found out which of his two possible meanings was operative,” Elmer-DeWitt reports. “According to the Apple Store, if you order an iPad 3G today, it will ship ‘By May 7th.'”
Elmer-DeWitt reports, “Apple attributes all this to ‘surprisingly strong’ demand for the new device.”

MacDailyNews Note: Earlier today, Apple sent an email to those who has already pre-ordered an iPad, including us, that stated, verbatim:
To Our Valued Apple Customer:
Thank you for your recent order of the magical and revolutionary iPad 3G.
We would like to confirm that your order will be shipped in late April as communicated at the time you placed your order. You will receive a confirmation notice when your order has shipped.
You can get up-to-date information about your order, including shipping status and tracking number, at http://www.apple.com/orderstatus
Thank you for choosing Apple.
Sincerely,

I just received an email from Apple confirming that my pre-order is still scheduled for ‘late April.’ Apple must be getting some questions on this…
Ok. I want my pre-ordered 3G iPad now. What the #$%& does late April mean anyway? Does 4/29 count as late April since the 30th is the last day of April? Geez!!!
As of his morning I have not received any such e-mail from Apple. The only communication I received was when I initially pre-ordered with ship date of late April. I checked my status on line his morning and still show ships late April. Patience.
@ Les S
Waaa, waaaa!
Late April means just what it says. Grow up.
So what does it mean exactly, oh (I’m assuming very old and very wise) sage-like one? Please illuminate.
Late April == April 37th

I ordered mine on 31 MAR. I have not received today’s email from Apple about a ship date.
Good timing on my part. Pre-ordered a 64GB on Friday night after work and Apple’s email told me it’s still shipping late April. Too bad it probably won’t be here before a trip to NYC on the 28th.
“Late April == April 37th”
My thoughts exactly.
Here’s the email I received this morning:
“To our valued Apple Customer:

Les S ordered a netbook, not a iPad.
Well, April being 30 days long, mid April would be the 15th and 16th, but you would probably include 5 days before and 5 days after, so that would be the 10th to the 21st being mid April.
That leaves the 1st to the 9th being early April and the 22nd to the 30th as late April. But, that is open to interpretation or if you can find it defined somewhere, go for it.
My main reason for the previous post was the lack of patience that most people have. Don’t agree to the stipulations and then bitch about it.
What I’m wondering is, when would one be able to walk into an Apple store and buy one?
Got the email at 5am this morning. It really only tells us that our 3G iPads are shipping before the end of the month. There have been no authorizations on my credit card, except that my Applecare plan WAS charged this morning – perhaps a sign of things to come.
i have a feeling it will ship this week. Seems that an announcement at the quarterly call may happen – it just appears “logical”.
I just got off the phone with Apple Consumer Affairs. He checked into my order and advised that I should have it delivered by the 30th of April
to my home. He also mentioned something else which is NOT relevant to my case, that FedEx is having enormous problems with shipments due to the vulcanic eruption.
