Fake Steve Jobs TV pilot in development

“EPIX and Media Rights Capital have made a team for iCON, a comedy series pilot that will be developed by Larry Charles, the Emmy-winning TV writer/producer, and the director of the Sacha Baron Cohen features Borat and Bruno,” Mike Fleming reports for Deadline.

“Charles will oversee development of the script and will direct the half-hour pilot of a series written by Dan Lyons,” Fleming reports. “A technology consultant for Newsweek, Lyons created the Fake Steve Jobs blog…”

MacDailyNews Take: Plus, Dan Lyons is a royal asshole.

Fleming continues, “The show’s lead charcter, Tom Rhodes, is a composite of Jobs and other Silicon Valley titans, and the comedy is described as a savage satire, a study of ego, power and greed. iCON becomes the second original pilot for the EPIX pay channel. ‘We are attempting to do nothing less than a modern Citizen Kane,’ Charles said.”

MacDailyNews Take: At any given time, more people are watching the average kindergartner’s video-taped dance recital than “EPIX,” whatever that is. And, we wouldn’t advise anyone other than Dan Lyons to hold their breath waiting for the pilot to appear on Apple’s iTunes Store.

If Jobso is still running Apple at year-end, I’ll be shocked.Dan Lyons, June 28, 2008

Unfortunately, the voltage must have been too low.

  1. Great idea for a show.
Unfortunately if the writing is by Dan Lyons it will be mostly unwatchable.

“Fake Steve Jobs” was a great idea, but just wasn’t funny.

  2. @ m159–

No, it’s the real Fake Steve Jobs.

Dan Lyons is the writer behind both. I think MDN is a little harsh on him.

I follow FSJ on Twitter, and it’s not all award-winning, but most of it is pretty entertaining, and even realistic.

  3. In the last few years, it seems that attitude has masqueraded as intelligence, especially in the US. If you can say something snarky, you’re a great talent ready for your huge (o please o please o please o) paycheck.

Jobs works hard, he has a visionary, has singular focus, and has made an enormous contribution to peoples’ well-being. Agree with the vision or not, he certainly moves things forward.

Lyons take? “Hey, over here! I have something to say that’s , like, really funners. Yes, they’re just words and they’re about someone else who actually does something and … makes something… and hey, have the heard the one about the pocket protector or the one about the guy who did something… funners?”

    Blech.

    Think Before You Barf.

  4. I can hardly wait for the pilot to flop, with Dan Lyons having to drag himself around town with his tail between his legs. What incredible dumbass producer is paying him money to write a pilot?

“…a study of ego, power and greed”. Right. So where does Steve Jobs fit into this plot? (o_0)

  5. Remember when Lyons bagged the whole Fake Steve thing for like four and a half minutes, then had to go scurrying back to it because no one gave a shit about anything else he tried to do?

I wonder how it feels to have one’s only successes in life come sifting through the excrement of a person who will actually be remembered for something they created.

    Steve Lyons: human remora.

  6. Steve Jobs is the story of invention, innovation, dedication to perfection, simplicity and success.

What is Steve Lyons was clever once in his life, using satire of a very private, world changing man’s life. Gave Lyons 5 min. of a taste of that fame and now he can’t let go.
