120,000 iPads pre-ordered on first day?

Apple Online Store“The team at Investor Village’s AAPL Sanity board have completed their initial analysis of pre-orders for the iPad tablet computer,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “Apple began taking orders on Friday for delivery starting April 3.”

Based on a sampling of 48 orders (for 54 iPads), and not counting units that were reserved but not ordered, the Sanity team estimates:

• Nearly 120,000 iPads sold
• Wi-Fi-only models (avail. Apr. 3) outpaced Wi-Fi + 3G (avila. “late April”) orders 69% to 31%, respectively.
• Storage capacity breakdown: 16GB – 40%, 32GB – 28%, 64GB – 33%

Elmer-DeWitt reports, “Estimates of the number of iPads Apple will have manufactured by April range from a high of 1 million to a low of 300,000.”

  1. Jeesh! considering that the estimates for hourly sales yesterday was between 20 and 25 thousand per hour, I estimate at least 300,000 were ordered yesterday. By Monday they will have 1 million iPads on order. I think that this is more likely.

  2. We might as well ask a swami or use a crystal ball as project from such limited samples. I know folks just cannot wait anymore, like kids at Christmas. And it does not matter because the long term is huge sales. Millions this year, more next year. I only know of two ordered for sure, those being mine.

  3. Apple did not target the Kindle so much as it was just in the way, collateral damage, and I doubt the company takes pleasure in smothering this particular mediocre product. To see what targeting looks like, consider flash. But reading various comments around the web, you’d think there was total war declared by outraged Apple haters, most of whom I suspect do not own a Kindle. The comments from the CEO of Asus are also laughable considering their track record of producing some of the goofiest, un-functional design ideas in tech history.

It’s understandable that people whose livelihoods are threatened by the Apple’s rolling technological revolution will resent it. And those who are variously incentivized to do so will trash any Apple product in the media. But also, owners of competing products might feel threatened by the more elegant and functional Apple products. The very superiority of Macs and iPods/iPhones/iPads is an accusation they bought the wrong things. And since technology is an extension of the brain, the proposition of a better device is an accusation they are stupid. Hence the vitriol.

Such hateful souls are already grinding their teeth over the iPad, These order numbers must have have them down to nubs.

  4. Wanna hear something bizarre?

Three years ago, the day the iPhone went on sale, I went to a Michael Buble concert in Seattle, then picked up my phone from the Apple Store on my way home.

Guess who I’m gonna go see perform in Seattle on Apr 3rd, after picking up the iPad?

    Creepy.

  5. If you throw the hourly data points (1,2,4,6 hours) you see sharp growth at first, slowing down over time, but never flat. There were 96k sold in te first 6 hours, 120k the whole day would match the growth curve, roughly.

  6. I ordered 2 myself, It’s weird (well not really) that it’s probably the first time in gadget history people are ordering by the most part in sets of 2, 3.. etc.. all i can say is wow. Can someone remind me if this happened before with any other company?

  7. Rumoured? The rumour was that 25,000 per hour were sold in the first 2 hours. What did you expect? Obviously those who wanted them would order just as soon as they could.

It would then move down markedly from there.

The earliest of adopters generally don’t wait until many hours after the opening of pre-orders, especially online, so the initial couple of hours would not be indicative of a continued pace.

It still is awesome that the iPad, if true, sold 120,000 in the first day. Wait until people have it in their hands!

  8. Two here. Placed order for mine (64GB WiFi + 3G) at 8:32am EST. Ordered the wife’s 32Gb WiFi around 7:30pm. Crazy thing? Our order numbers are 112,878 numbers apart! Lends a little reliability to some of the estimates floating around out there…

  9. I live in an area that doesn’t always get delivery as quickly as apple promises so just had mine reserved. Plus then I didn’t have to part with the money already – and I get to be a part of the launch day activities at an apple store. That’s a win-win-win!

  10. 64GB 3G ordered 15 minutes after the per-ordering started! The real sales stats will come after they are shipped and the early birds such as I are using them in front of our friends and family and the envy begins!
Giant iPod Touch? If that all it turns out to be, with 3G access and iWork available, Then Apple’s stock will be on a very steep verticle climb.
Enterprise admin beware! The next big thing in mobile business devices is about to overwelm you!

  11. 120,000 the first day is not bad. However, it still remains to be seen how many more will be sold. I have yet to talk to anyone who needs one. Unless you are a constant traveler, I don’t see any compelling reason to have one other than its another Apple product. I was going to get one for my wife for her birthday, but she said she doesn’t want one. She wants an iPod touch instead.

The only thing that interests me about it is the ability to view pdf’s vertically as opposed to trying to read them on my MacBook Pro now.

I may however become more interested in a couple of years if Apple goes the direction I believe they may. I think the laptop will be dead and the iPad format will become the standard. An iPad with a full version of OS X will be very enticing to me.

A rough three-day estimate, based on an analysis of order numbers: 152,000 units

After the initial bust of excitement on Friday that saw iPad pre-orders coming in at the rate of 25,000 per hour, there was a dramatic fall-off over the weeken

  13. The fall off is normal. The initial surge was due entirely to us MDN readers going nuts. I did too. Now we will see lower sales until April 4 and then it will take off again as people start to see them in Stores and by word of mouth from the early adopters. It was ever so, I think. It’s not yet released so only us dedicated Appleseeds will pre-order.
