MacDailyNews Take: In his full article, Goldman seem to assume that Apple would never protect their patented intellectual property as it relates to Palm’s webOS. We wouldn’t be so quick to make such an assumption, especially if another company tried to snatch it up and incorporate it into their own mobile device plans.

I don’t think Apple would ever go after Palm, because in truth Apple has “borrowed” just as many patents from Palm as Palm has “borrowed” from Apple..

Apple is not going to waste litigation resources on Palm right now- they’re irrelevant- and they’ll self destruct. The Motorola merger will just speed that up.
The bigger fight is with HTC / Google and a fight they must win.
As far as the “anti- anything but Apple” comment- personally- I have no problem with good product competition- as a shareholder- I DO have a problem with IP infringements… so doesn’t Mr. Jobs.

And I wasn’t trying to flame, I was expressing my fantasy of a Motorola Droid running webOS, until I remembered I was on MacDailyNews where they post news stories about other companies and then people get flamed for expressing their fantasies about said companies. based on your linked article, I’m wondering if it would be cheaper for Apple to just buy Palm, get all their IP, and maybe kill everything that is related to them. Wouldn’t that be more cost-effective than suing them?
I think Palm might actually have a decent patent portfolio, but I don’t think Moto has the necessary $$$ anymore to make it work. Someone like HP that has real money and clout in terms of production, development, marketing and getting the Palm out the door with many more developers, telcos and countries would be better.
It would seem like one of the big players like HP or Verizon would realize it would be much better to control their own destiny with Palm instead of being dependent on Google, MS or Nokia.
Palm hubris has been silly, but I actually like the Palm OS.
Motorola needs an OS to compete long term in the smartphone arena. Relying on Microsoft or Android would be a mistake. However, Moto would have to commit to continuing to develop the software, and I don’t know that their corporate culture can do that.
Actually, that is a perfect idea! If Moto and Palm got together, they could possibly give Android a run for the money with a Droid level device running WebOS. It seems like the perfect match. Not that they will ever catch up to iPhone, but there is always room for a decent OS and WebOS needs decent hardware.
