Wouldn’t work particularly well in E-ink would it.
As for DK they have seen this future for 20 years, their books will look sensational in this format, set free at last to fulfil their true potential. I suspect there is massive excitement in their offices and thankfully now free from Microsoft who quite clearly did not share their vision. No change there then.
Not too sure about kids, they’ll throw the ipad across the room to see if theres any change in effect of spotty

When I picked up my newspaper at my front door this morning, i though: “Gee! I should be counting down to the first paperless (as opposed to news-free) day sometime at the end of this month.”

my two and a half year old can use an iPhone, without damaging it – she can start Donald cartoons on Youtube and play some of the easier games (Traffic Rush is her favorite). I feel the touch ui from the iPhone is much easier to use than those clunky gamepads/controllers you find with specialy-for-kids-so-called-“learning”-computertoys…
Well that helps solidify my future purchase of an iPad. It’s great to see how much fun some of these companies are having re-creating what they already have just for the iPad. There is no way other competitors will be able to match apples UI on this what so ever.
And just to think that was only showing some books. The game is just starting ladies and gents.
Doesn’t the paint app show exactly what MDN has been saying iPod/iPad can’t do (and using as a justification for why Flash is useless on the device)? The finger clicks to pick a color, then hover/moves the brush, and clicks to apply it.
I call BS on someone. Don’t know who yet.

Apple only recently did a patent effort vs a “hover” function. #1
The flash developer said that FLASH software was the problem. It could not convert mac touch movements without making mouse movements a problem. Its the “too many cooks in the kitchen” problem. Apple has one cook …. cloned into many kitchens, so they all work together very well.

Kids damaging the iPad by throwing it around? I’m sure some enterprising case maker will make one out of brightly colored rubber with big chunky easy to hold edges (maybe featuring animals, or dinosaurs – that’s what young kids go for these days) that’ll protect it from damage

Penguin reinvented the book decades ago when they invented the paperback. Now they’re doing it again.

I think I’ll give iPads to my grandchildren for their birthdays.

I challenge you to get the Flash off your OWN Site. Sure, it will cost you a few $$$ in ad revenue. So? Stick to your principles or keep quiet about them!

Dear John Makinson and Penguin, please don’t “reinvent” books
Reading does make you a more well-rounded individual. It also makes you smarter. Literally. Reading rewires synapses in the brain through neuroplastic changes in a way that passive entertainment like sitcoms or movies can’t do.The magic in reading is that the reader must take a proactive involvement in the story. He must focus his attention on the words that form sentences that form paragraphs that form ideas. When I’m watching a movie, it’s very easy to snack on food or talk on the phone at the same time. When I read I must be completely involved in the page.

Same for me. With how responsive I’ve seen my kids (I have 4) and my nieces and nephews are with an iPhone, the iPad is going to be a fantastic device worth its weight in gold when we are out for dinner or such. I can’t tell you how much I wish I had something this entertaining for my kids while out to dinner with friends.
All I can say is… those who make assmarks about the use of the iPad for the small children demographic either don’t have kids or underestimate a parents resolve to provide for their children while at the same time enjoying the benefits of its entertainment (distraction) factor for kids while out.
If they are not working on it already, a book company needs to come out with:
• the ability to make personalized notes in the margin,
• the ability to scan over multi pages of a book from icons (as in PDF files) for a quick look for such notes or for quick find of specific pages.
I may be behind on this but the ability to personalize E-books with notes, earmarks and quick-find of such is a necessity from the beginning.
I like the concept and look forward to my digital newspaper.

This doesn’t have to be the demise of reading. Think how much easier it will be to encourage kids to read with an interactive component in the mix. Reading about baseball hitters, look up the stats directly, rearrange them into charts, graph a players progress. Then return to the text. It’s a much richer environment if designed well. Not just playing with colors on Spot. By the way, where are Dick and Jane?
If any can hit the nail on the head, it’s going to be Penguin Books — they been first class for years!
Almost weekly now, another friend admits that they want an iPad. I have a feeling that after showing this video at work tomorrow, the rest will fall in line.
