InfoWorld’s Kennedy: IT needs to act now to avoid the Apple tablet apocalypse

January Blowout Specials ends 1/31“I hate disruptive technologies. They’re antithetical to all that’s sane and stable in enterprise IT. So when I hear that one out of every five tech-savvy consumers is interested in buying the as-yet-unannounced Apple tablet device, I start to squirm a bit in my chair,” Randall C. Kennedy writes for InfoWorld.

“Assuming a third-quarter ship date, this fruity new wonder could prove to be the hottest item under the Christmas tree,” Kennedy writes. “And that means that, come January 2011, IT shops will be inundated with idiot users lobbying to hook their iPads/iSlates/iTablets (iBricks?) into the corporate network.”

“At first, users will sneak them into the office as companion devices. Before long, they’ll insist that IT support them directly by providing expensive docking cradles and proprietary keyboard/mice combinations — all so that they can ditch their carefully tested, enterprise-ready, company-provided desktop or laptop in favor of their shiny new toy,” Kennedy writes. “All hell will break loose.”

Kennedy writes, “So what can IT do to thwart the coming Apple tablet-pocalypse? First, an outright ban is in order. Use whatever excuse you think carries the most weight. For example, claim that the devices are insecure, and that plugging them into the corporate network will compromise its integrity. Then seek to contain the situation by offering up an alternative tablet solution running the IT-supported and IT-approved Windows 7 operating system.”

  1. More proof that IT doesn’t understand that they do not exist to be catered to by their users, rather they are to serve their users and present solutions based on their needs.

  2. As an network admin, this is actually true. Users i work for a clinic and believe me doctors are the worse i have ever had to deal with in this regard. They bring in all there different devices and want us to deal with them. palm, blackberry, you name it. We use windows PC but are in fact not the typical IT shop as many seem to stereotype. Myself and the IT Director are Mac users, we have place 6 mac minis at the company within the last year and 1 iMac. We also have a all IT owned Cell phones are with AT&T;and anyone who asks in a provider or executive role can have an iPhone 6 people out of the hundreds employed here took that option. They would rather use there stuff and do this and that with it, then they call me because they palm deleted their outlook calendar or because the BB is not syncing. My response is call Verizon or blackberry. We dont bother with supporting users stuff. So basically the same thing but in reverse. only because it is very time consuming to support a users stuff and we are not paid to fix your personal stuff.

Uninformed users are the real problem.

    For example:
I had to go to the conference room yesterday because there was a guy here doing a presentation who refused to use the mac mini connected to the plasma in the room.
Guy: I am going to do a Powerpoint,
Me: OK sir i will put it up on the screen.
Guy: NO you don’t understand i am going to do a MICROSOFT POWERPOINT.
Me: Um ok give me the file and here is the bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

  3. What a raving idiot !

“sane and stable in enterprise IT” and ‘Windoze’ mentioned in the same paragraph…

Has he actually tried any of the ‘stable’ windows OSes past XP ? Yeah….. stable comes to mind (thats sarcasm – in case Kenedy reads this…)

All I can think of are all of the companies still running COBOL apps back in 1999 – and the fear they had re: 2000….. THATS what you get when you refuse to move forward with new technology

  4. conservatives don’t understand satire… or most things; altruism, compassion, equality, ethics, humanitarianism, peace… people who aren’t or on their way to being fat white old and classless…

    had to ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
