Apple’s tablet: The everything killer

“Apple’s lips are sealed about its widely rumored tablet computer, but technology experts are giddy about the device, already exclaiming it will be the gadget to end all gadgets,” David Goldman reports for CNNMoney.com

“Executives at Apple never discuss products that are in the works, so there’s no confirmation that the thing even exists,” Goldman reports. “But rumors are circulating that Steve Jobs and Co. have designed a magazine-sized, touch-screen, hand-held, all-in-one device that is half-iPhone, half-Macintosh computer.”

“If the rumors are true, the tablet will be able to do basically everything a gadget could possibly do. It’s an e-reader, a gaming device, and a music player. You can watch TV and movies on it and surf the Internet (or so we’ve heard). And it will have thousands of third-party apps available for it … or maybe it will run Mac OS X,” Goldman reports. “That’s all still unknown.”

Goldman reports, “‘This will be the next big thing,’ said Laura DiDio, principal analyst at ITIC. ‘Apple is going to wow everybody with the tablet.'”

  1. @Dallasm: Totally agree with you. I’m not buying a tablet from anybody, especially not at $1,000. My MacBook Pro and iPhone do every single thing I need, thank you very much. There’s just no reason for a tablet.

  2. @Predrag

Really was an honest mistake when I glanced at it.

    It’s a rarity nowadays, I’m happily married 20 years. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  4. Whatever it is, this mythical device must have an internet connection. If it only works over wi-fi, that limits its usefulness as a mobile device. If it relies on a cellular connection, it is half dead before it is even born. AT&T;has maintained a stranglehold on the iPhone from the very beginning. An Apple “everything killer” must, above all else, be free of the tyranny of the cell phone companies in order to become a truly great product.

  5. A laptop has portability but lacks instant on. It lacks an always on connection and lacks good battery life. It also lacks as much portability as one would prefer. Netbooks attempt to fill in some of these deficiencies but do not address the major ones. Touch screen phones allow you to communicate, are instant on, do not require a hardware keyboard, have better battery life, a constant data connection and are much more portable. Unfortunately they have small screens. The slate is the next obvious step (mainframe, micro, PC, laptop, slate). It will be a new category that will partially replace notebooks and desktops. If done properly, it will replace my laptop which replaced my desktop. All I will need hopefully is a slate and a bluetooth handset for talking on the phone. Bye Bye Mac… Bye Bye PC. Hello World!

  6. Didanyone besides me notice that this article came out in November? As I was reading it, I was thinking “why does this sound so familar?”, and then I realized it was because I read it 4 months ago. Hey MDN, can we try and stick with current articles please?
    Thanks,
