I love the BGR, generally I get -20+ dislikes per post. Those silly Droid users. Any hoot, sitting on the toilet last night playing blackjack on this here iPhone I couldn’t help but notice how big my hands would have to be to type easily on a 10 inch tablet. (Hell I already know the difficulty of handling 10 inches…ladies….) but seriously, not that I am not, 7 inches is about as comfortable as a handheld could probably get. I am sure in a year you won’t see too many large tablets.

Lol, for once I hope Apple restricts choice to one model because I’d be too indecisive. Do I go with 7 for added portability or 10 for that big, comfortable screen?
I sort of feel like 7″ is the sweet spot, the perfect compromise. I watch videos just fine on my iPhone so 7 shouldn’t be a problem.

How is 7″ too small? The Kindle is great for reading with a 6″ screen.
The Kindle screen is roughly the same size as the pages in a standard size paperback.

A 5″ screen is twice as large as the current iPhone or touch. A 7″ screen would be three times as large, plenty large for book reading, websurfing, movie watching, etc.

@ExoticGuy: According to Wikipedia, “A Format” paperbacks are 110 mm x 178mm (4.33″ x 7.01″)in size, “B Format” paperbacks are 130 mm x 198mm (5.12″ x 7.8″), while “C Format” (trade paperbacks) are 135 mm x 216mm (5.32″ x 8.51″). And Kindle dimensions are 7 1/2” x 5” by .7”.
So a 7″ tablet would be just slightly smaller than a standard paperback and approximately the size of the Kindle, both of which most people are used to reading already. And I slip paperbacks in my pocket, purse, or backpack all the time; thickness of the book is the main constraint, and that wouldn’t be a factor with an Apple tablet. (And imagine the money Apple’s 3rd party developers will make on cases, just as they do for the iPods and the iPhone –everything from fine leather to funky padded fabric.) Make it too big and it would be too unwieldy to read in crowded conditions, such as while commuting on crowded public transit.

@MacTony: My dad-in-law has been jealous of my iPhone for the web surfing capabilities, especially since the medical clinic has free WiFi (between him and my mom-in-law they spend a lot of time there), but the small screen has been offputting; a 7-inch screen would be just about the right size especially if there’s a seamless way to increase text size. Might have to start saving up for his Father’s Day gift…

Base it on a version of the iPhone/iPod Touch OS, with the ability to download/install apps from the App Store, and it would leave the standard tablet PC in the dust. See, it’s not designed to be a workhorse PC (though you could use it for some basic writing if it includes Bluetooth and someone makes a portable keyboard, similar to the ones that worked with Palm devices); it’s designed as a media machine, for reading, surfing the Web, and audio/video. You want to edit pictures or movies? You’ll have either your laptop or desktop system for that — this is for the times that you want to have access to the Internet and your media files, but don’t want to have to drag along your big-arse laptop.

@bioness — Not stupid at all; first of all, being Apple the resolution and screen clarity will likely be far better than your standard netbook; development of the tablet Mac is probably what has kept Apple out of the netbook market. Second, I’d expect that Apple would offer a selection of resolution settings to make it easier for people to read depending on their particular need.
You want to lug around a big-arse screen, fine — I’ll go with the 7-inches just fine.

Historically Apple releases/announces brand new products at the beginning of the year.
Tablet no! An iPod touch with a 7.1″ LCD at 720p (1280×720) or 1080p (1920×1080) screen for reading and HD movies called the iPod touch HD, a solid maybe!
I think Apple will stay away from the OLED currently due to color fading and the fact that the image washes out under bright lighting conditions and their cost.
Apple will also stay away from calling the device a tablet or a book reader. Apple will leverage the iPod brand for the device, the App Store and well iTunes store in general.
It’s not the X-Mas sales they are worried about , it’s the quarter after X-Mas that is usually the worst of the year and if this hits the numbers should be really good.

I handle and carry around mine with no problem.
It all makes perfect sense. Remember Steve J. is really into books and typography. In the A paper-size system – based on diagonal An:An+1 = sqrt2, area An:An+1 = 2, and H:W = sqrt2 – the iPhone is a (slightly flattened) A8 size. A standard notebook has an A4 sized screen (like a page from a ‘notebook’). The two suggested formats are A5 (10″ = textbook size) and A6 (7″ = paperback size). The A5 would be large enough for two-handed touch typing (of sorts.. I’d dock it and use an extended keyboard). The A6 would be good for reading/browsing but not great for typing on. An A7 would just be silly except maybe for primary school kids – with their tiny fingers and great eyesight – in the classroom.
