Google releases Google Chrome for Mac beta

“73,804 lines of Mac-specific code and 29 developer builds later, we’re excited to finally release Google Chrome for Mac in beta,” so sayeth John Grabowski and Mike Pinkerton via the Official Google Mac Blog. “We took a hefty dose of goodness from the Windows version to build a fast, polished browser for Mac — with features such as the Omnibox (where you can both search and type in addresses), themes from artists, and most importantly, speed.”

MacDailyNews Take: “Hefty dose of goodness from the Windows version?” Sounds like Word 6. Yuck.

“We also took great care to make Google Chrome a native application for Mac,” Grabowski and Pinkerton report. “For example, we integrated the Keychain into Google Chrome for Mac, and incorporated Mac-style animations when you open the Bookmarks bar.”

  1. This is the reason I’m not entirely fond of being associated with Mac fanboys. A lot of you have legitimate reasons for not liking Chrome, like missing features or not wanting your privacy invaded by Google, but a lot of silliness and pride is also in play here.

“I won’t use products that treat Mac users as second class citizens.” Seriously? You’re going to use your pride as an excuse to not use a product? You realize that a majority of Windows users don’t want to switch to Macs because Apple is apparently trying to “scam” them, and is after their souls, or because they don’t want to give in to all the snobbish fanboys. Pride is a blinding factor.

I keep an open mind when it comes to new players in any game. Google, being the internet giant, are developing what may be shaping up to be the most powerful browser out there. Chrome is the youngest popular browser out there. How do you think things will turn out if you give it as much time to develop as Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer had? I’m a Chrome supporter because Google is the most likely winner in the long-run.

I’m using Chrome right now, and I’m liking it so far. Safari will be my main browser until Chrome proves reliable enough. I’m already impressed with Chrome’s speed. It doesn’t seem to have the connection slowness issues I tend to have on OS X.

  2. “We took a hefty dose of goodness from the Windows version to build a fast, polished browser for Mac”

This is the most idiotic press release ever from Google. No Mac user wants a “hefty dose of goodness from Windows”. It sounds like a venereal disease.

  3. I’m now using Google Chrome as my main browser on my Macbook, as it is both fast and clean. Way better than Safari or Firefox. No unnecessary junk staring me in the face. Also – I think it is pathetic to read some of the negative comments about Chrome for the Mac. You naysayers need to get a life….as this really is a BETA release!!

  4. I recall a time way back when a person could visit a forum and find useful information. Sadly these increasingly popular forms of public information exchange have become homes for media trolls that want nothing more than to bash everything and use fear mongering and paranoia to do so. The feature in chrome that allows an individual tab to crash rather than the entire browser when loading a page with issues is reason enough to give it a try in my opinion which by the way everyone is entitled to. So for those of you out there that truly believe Google, Apple, Microsoft, the government etc are out to steal your soul can feel free to not use their products and continue to devolve until you can no longer pollute these forums with your ridiculous commentary that nobody cares to sift through looking for purposeful information. Thanks.
