Apple releases MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8

Apple Online StoreApple today released MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8 which eliminates the noise made by the optical disk drive during system startup and wake from sleep on MacBook Pro computers.

When installation is complete, please run Software Update again, and install SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0.

MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8 is available via Software Update and also as a standalone installer.

  1. Mea culpa… did the Superdrive Update and of course it works.

    MY MBP is even more wonderful, that sound irritated me.

    I while ago I was going to record a variety of the different tones they make on different Macs..and make a song for Jobs saying please take it away, now I don’t have to. One day we’ll say ‘remember when?..’

  2. I have a unibody 15″ from june this year running 10.6.2 and it won’t install the 1.8 or the superdrive update so I’m stuck with the damn sound (didn’t annoy me ’til these updates came along). just says the computer doesn’t need the update.

  3. I did the update, but didnt know what it was for, so I haven’t noticed if the noise is still there or not… i do know that there was a disc in my optical drive when I did the update and it spat the disc out at me after I did the reboot. LOL. Thought that was funny.

  4. Emil, same situation for me, 13″ MPB, makes that sound on start up, but Apple said this machine didn’t need when I tried to install it. Weird.
