Multiple independent sources tell MacDailyNews that Apple will unveil new iMacs next week.
Our best guess for the release date, with which at least two of our sources agree, is: Tuesday, September 29 via press release around 8:30am EDT.
Earlier this morning, AppleInsider also reported that new iMacs are imminent.
More details here.
Don’t be ridiculous!
quad core! quad core!!
Well, as long as there is confirmation. I am pretty sure Steve himself is the confirming source.
Cheaper! Cheaper! Cheaper!
Thinner/sleeker=good. Cheaper=great. Quad core=Best!
@Macintosher your “Cheaper, cheaper, cheaper! Reminded me of the old SNL skit “Cheesburger, cheeseburger! Pepsi, Pepsi!” LOL
LED screens, please, Apple!!!
awesome… too bad we just bought 2 new ones last week…
Oh no, not “imminent” again.

“multiple” = 2 or more?
My guess is *after* September 30, which is the end of Fiscal Year 2009 for many business and government entities.
MDN, any word about an update to the Mac mini? Will it get a quiet update at the same time?
With i5 or mobile i7 processors.
No quad-core in the thin-body design. You can’t get enough heat sink surface area on them for the kind of heat they make. Especially if they are going even thinner in the iMac line. It’ll be dual-core for the foreseeable future. But if you’re lucky, they might (someday) come out with the headless (better-than-a-mini) consumer machine, which COULD have a quad chip. Or I suppose they could have two dual-core chips, although I haven’t heard anyone even mention that possibility.
How about MacMinis?
Or AppleTVs?
I’ve been waiting two years for this new iMac. Yes, this is the end of the line, please step behind me. Christmas is coming early this year!
@ MacSmiley,
That would be one of the most logical changes to my mind, especially if they are going to a thinner design.
I can’t picture the next iMacs & MacBook Pros not having quad core chips to take avantage of SL.
How bad would the thermal issues be? Worse than my G5 iMac that doubles as a space heater?
@Stephen
The Core 2 Duo is already a multicore processor that can benefit from SL.
I’m always kind of selfish with these new product releases. Since I just bought a new 24-inch back in June, I’m kind of hoping a whole new kick ass design doesn’t come out to make mine look dated.
On the other hand, I’ve bought enough other stuff right when it came out and got my kicks. Karma . . .
wouldn’t apple hold a “special event” if they have a redesign and significant bumps, like moving to a desktop processor?
How about a 30″
No quad-cores for iMac users. If you want a quad-core then you’ll be expected to pony up the extra money to buy a Mac Pro. Sorry, but Apple must keep its Mac line-up well-defined.
If they come out with a Quad-Core 24″ iMac a mere week after I spent SERIOUS wampum getting the least expensive Quad-Core in their line – a system with much more capability than I expect I’ll need (except for the RAM, which I’ll need to boost a bit), I’ll be seriously bummed!
January, for “much faster at the same clock rate” … sure.
Next WEEK?
Nope … skinny case, not enough room for heat sink. Don’t anybody tell me different! Nope. Don’t want to hear about it. Don’t want to wash my keyboard in tears.
