NY Times’ Pogue reviews Apple’s new 5G iPod nano: Now the world’s smallest camcorder

Apple StoreApple’s new 5th-gen iPod nano, unveiled this past Wednesday, is “exactly the same size as the previous one: 3.6 x 1.5 x 0.2 inches. That is, it’s a wafer-thin, rounded-edged slab that comes in 9 metallic colors,” David Pogue reports for The New York Times.

“But it now has a microphone. And a speaker. And an FM radio. And a voice recorder. And a pedometer that counts how many steps you walk or run. And a camcorder,” Pogue reports. “If this isn’t the smallest camcorder in the world, I don’t know what is.”

“The sound is crisp but mono; the video is only standard definition. The Nano does not shoot still photos; Apple says that kind of sensor wouldn’t fit in a case this small,” Pogue reports. “I want to whine about these things, I really do. But you know what? You’ve got video in a machine that can hide between two fingers, for Pete’s sake. There’s something to be said about having a video recorder in a gadget that’s so small, you always have it with you. What good is hi-def if you didn’t have the camcorder when the moment arose?”

“Also, don’t be surprised if this thing triggers a whole social wave of spy-filming,” Pogue reports. “It’s totally easy to conceal.”

MacDailyNews Take: Watch out Paris.

Pogue continues, “Apple says that it’s sold 100 million Nanos so far, in its various iterations; now that it’s sprouted a feature list as long as your arm, the Nano’s popularity is in no danger.”

  1. If it weren’t for the fact that I carry around my entire library with me, I’d have gotten one already.
I had a black 8Gb stolen, and then was given a (35Gb so far) 80Gb iPod classic.
Hoping to save up for the 64Gb iPod touch I’ve been wining for since March.
    Also, first.

  2. I won’t be impressed until they put these features in the iPod ‘Shuffle’; including still shots and a built-in flash.

    Naw, just kidding. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  3. The sad thing is the video quality sucks. It’s not even comparable to the 3GS. Not only that but the placement of the camera was a poor design choice on Apple’s part. It’s too bad because this could have been a “Flip killer”. Now it just fails to hit the mark. I’m sure it’ll be upgraded in a future revision though. We can only hope the iPod Touch gets the same camera as the 3GS.

  4. Go ahead and rub it in Pogue. Those of us ready to plunk our money down on a new iPod Touch with still/video camera are now finding that the iTouch is a crippled device. The nano looks like a Cadillac by comparison.

Sir Jobsy has proclaimed that the iTouch is a gaming device instead.

p.s. Jobsy, I will never buy an iphone, I don’t care how much you cripple the iTouch. I’m not in that market. And I am not alone.

  5. @Toobad: Simmer down just a tad. I”m not condoning Ottawa Mark’s fantasies, but the age of consent in Canada and several U.S. states is 16 years of age. Miley is nearly 17 years old, so Mark’s behavior may be inappropriate but I don’t think he falls into the “sick freak” territory.

  6. Maybe, MAYBE, I can use it’s ability to record voice to convince my wife SHE needs one. Tried to add a mic to my 3G and failed – it kept crashing – and now that iPod’s battery is “questionable”. Hmmm …

  7. @ x,

I have to stand up for Ottawa Mark.

If you’ve read any of his posts you would know that he’s still a teenager himself.

I have it on very good authority that he still lives in his momma’s basement.

Nothing inappropriate in his Miley comment at all.

…”The sad thing is the video quality sucks”

You must have not seen them yet. Download a few from Apple’s site and you may notice that this thing blows all other cellphones (except iPhone) out of the water. The video is smooth, clear and sharp. Audio is full-range and clear, although mono. Even the best “smartphones” out there, with WinMobile, only shoot the 3GP video in postage-stamp size (320×240 at 15fps), and compression is dreadful.

There is no device of this size that generates video if such quality.

The Apple videos aren’t anything like real world test. If you search online you can see the video is extremely shaky and jello like. The frame rate looks horrible as well. Motion roll looks horrid. The stutter roll is just unacceptable.

    > I won’t be impressed until they put these features in the iPod ‘Shuffle’; including still shots and a built-in flash.

That would be amusing… I can just “picture” VoiceOver describing to you what is in the picture, and then pressing the nub on the cord FOUR times to take a picture (FIVE times to use the flash).

  11. @ ken1w,

Yeah, if they get enough features on the Shuffle it will be like tapping Morse code into a telegraph key.

Hey, that’s an idea … Morse code over Wi-Fi. Kinda sounds like a Zune innovation.

  12. @Toobad
Don’t know what planet you’re reporting from, but the camera footage looked pretty sweet to me. I own a flip (not an HD). It’s definitely comparable.

I think you’re kind of missing the point of what it will take to be a Flip killer. A Flip is the portable way to capture video, but you can only do one thing with it. People will be willing to compromise somewhat on quality (which I contend will only be experienced vs the HD model) when they can have a video camera built into their iPod – not to mention the fact the thing is a fraction of the size of the Flip.

  13. I saw real world footage taken outside/different environments. Let’s get real and stop drinking the koolaid. I like Apple but to be honest they’re just another company looking to take our money. The fanboyism here is crazy.

  14. Please do not use the “P” word around here in any shape or form, and I’m Not referring to the “Paris.. girls.”

    Ugh.

Back on topic, I’m very happy for the Nano, but I want/need the Touch to have audio-video capability… if they gear it to gamers, I will never be in the market, and until AT & T works in my house, I can’t get an iPhone. Verizon gets no bars either- we had to go with Sprint, which oddly enough has been fine in our neighborhood and most everywhere we’ve visited up and down the east coast.
