Apple’s next iMac and Mac mini to employ NVIDIA chipsets

“Configuration files buried within some versions of Mac OS X show evidence that the next iMac and Mac mini will indeed be based on the NVIDIA MCP79 chipset. Apple recently switched their MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models to the NVIDIA chipsets in October. Amongst other benefits, the new notebooks have much improved graphics card capabilities, which make them more suitable to take advantage of OpenCL technologies coming in Snow Leopard,” Arnold Kim reports for MacRumors.

“Apple will apparently be bringing these improvements to both the new iMac and Mac mini. While many have expected the iMac to receive these upgrades, the fate of the Mac mini has been less certain,” Kim reports.

Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider, “Also of interest is that the entries for the new iMac and Mac mini are dated 2008, which may provide evidence to support claims that these systems were originally targeted for a release in the November time frame but were pushed into the first quarter of the year due to unexpected delays.”

  1. Also Apple is following the lead of other companies because glossy screens produce a nice punch. I love it. I felt in love with the gloss… My Mac is in a room where there is no overhead light and it is just wonderful. It just stand out. Love it

  2. You missed the mark, Marco.

I I bet if Apple had 5 or more clones making Macs there be tons of conflicts – guaranteed.

    Of course there would be.

The point here is we have an “everybody’s doing it” situation.

All the PC makers have glossy screens. All the PC makers also use Windows Vista. Does that make either the best choice?

Apple USED to be all about differentiation, not following the crowd.
Using the same gloss crap as everyone else is not leadership.

  3. Went to a glossy with my current MacBook Pro ages ago, and don’t find it an issue at all.

Just occasionally I’ll need to adjust the screen angle, but otherwise it’s fine.

That said, it would be good for Apple to offer a choice, even if a matte screen was a cost option.

I gather there is a static-fix matte film available but you need clean-room conditions to make a good job of applying it properly.

  4. mini is nice….

but we need a gaming mac… one that isnt casterated, and one that does cost $2500

mdn magic word: costs; as in it costs too damn much

srsly appl.. if you wan more user base lower your prices, and make a comptuer that people want.

  5. Apple also used to be about having product ready-to-use out of the box.

Guess it’s off to buy an anti-glare screen with that new Mac, the same way you buy anti-virus software for a PC.

And crisp vs blur is complete BS. Are you comparing Apples to Apples (ahem), or a 17″ iMac with a cheap ass screen to a current offering? The only crisp things here are people’s glare-burnt eyes.

  6. RE: just sayin

As Apple gets bigger, once they get over the 15 to 20% marketshare, we will need Anti-Virus programs. When Apple was at 4% marketshare they had commercials saying they didn’t need Anti-Virus programs… Today, at 8% Apple is recommending it… When they hit the 15 to 20% you will need it. People will be writing more viruses for the OS…. It’s bound to happen in the next year or two

  7. “Also of interest is that the entries for the new iMac and Mac mini are dated 2008, which may provide evidence to support claims that these systems were originally targeted for a release in the November time frame but were pushed into the first quarter of the year due to unexpected delays.”

Which means either Apple keeps their options open, or the mini is getting a new lease on life.

  8. As Apple gets bigger, once they get over the 15 to 20% marketshare, we will need Anti-Virus programs.

As Toyota increased their market share, did their vehicles become progressively easier to steal?

As Mac increases market share, we’ll certainly see a growing number of punks ATTEMPTING to write viruses.

Will the punks succeed? Hard to say. Sure some SOB might get in through an obscure chip in the armor, but we’re very unlikely to see a Windows-like mess. I highly doubt we’ll see kiddie kits for writing one’s own OS X virus.

  9. RE: clunker

I believe as Toyota became bigger they had more QC issues… google it. Huge problems in 2007/8.

It’s bound to happen to any large corp. MS owns 89% market share. Viruses will be written for the largest OS… Not for us Mac users with 8% market share. When we hit 20%, that will be a different story. The time and effort to write a virus will be more fruitful at 20% than at 8%. We are still in the single digits – a big nobody compared to the 89% Microsoft holds.

Mac OS 10.6 has to be that much better than Windows 7, if Apple wants to succeed. Right now Apple has the edge over Vista, but MS knows this and 2009/10 when OS 10.6 and Windows 7 is out, they will be new operating systems… A new game begins again… Apple will have to come out with a new strategy because the current won’t work so well… Microsoft is and has learned from the mess they caused with Vista.

Right now Apple has to come out with the best hardware to convince new buyers and to keep old buyers afloat… Taking FW out of the Macbook was a big set back in my eyes… Yes they are selling more, but doesn’t mean people agree with it.

And remember, the Guy on top has to do more to stay on top… That means Microsoft has to do more to stay number one… Windows 7 will be the test for Microsoft. Apple has to do less in my eyes.

For Apple to get over 30% market share in the OS will be years, maybe decades. It took them so long to go back up. 8% is a small number if you think about it… And with the premium prices Apple charges with less features… It will even be harder to climb.
It is possible but it will take LOTS of time and effort.

Apple is determined but so is the competition…
Competition is fierce. And in the end, it benefits us… The buyers.

IE: People want the LED 24″ put using display port was a set back… Especially since you need a newer machine to use it… Kinda like Vista… You need new hardware to use it or u got conflict issues… Apple did the same thing in my eyes 🙁

  10. @tt: hmmm… lesse

Dell sells a PC at a profit margin that affords them a Big Mac at McDonalds on each sale. And Dell is in trouble due to those low profit margins.

Apple sells at a profit margin that affords them filet mignon on each sale. Apple has 26 billion dollars in the bank with NO debt.

So your argument, as well as the many others’ who want a cheap POS Mac, are meaningless and worthless. Get a real job or save your money if you want a Mac.
