IBM to acquire Transitive

IBM today announced it plans to acquire Transitive Corporation, a privately held technology company headquartered in Los Gatos, California, with a research and development team in Manchester, United Kingdom. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Transitive is a leader in cross-platform virtualization and a pioneer in developing technologies that allow applications written for one type of microprocessor and operating system to run on multiple platforms — with little or no modification. As a result, the technology will enable customers to consolidate their Linux-based applications onto the IBM systems that make the most sense for their business needs. Transitive’s breakthrough technology has earned the company 48 worldwide patents and numerous industry awards. This acquisition is part of IBM’s strategy to help clients optimize the efficiency and productivity of their computing infrastructure and improve the utilization of the servers that run them. With this translation technology, along with existing migration capabilities, IBM systems give businesses a faster, easier path for server consolidation to reduce operational expenses, floorspace and energy costs.

Transitive technology is currently included as part of the IBM PowerVM software designed to help customers consolidate their x86 Linux workloads onto IBM Systems. IBM is seeing a growing trend of customers migrating from under-utilized servers to IBM Systems, including onto mainframe and Power Systems. The company is committed to developing additional tools and solutions to make migrations even easier, while minimizing the risk and increasing the financial returns for clients as they consolidate and virtualize to achieve significant business benefit.

  1. I almost said “What the hell has IBM got to do with Apple anymore” then I read the MacDailyNews Note.

IBM seems to be a good stock pick as a hedge against the hyperinflation going to be caused by “Democrat spending gone wild” that’s going to occur over the next couple of years before the public boots their sorry asses out of Congress.

    What you all think?

May I remind you the smartest people are working as Hedge Fund managers and the only clueless idiots gets elected for office as seen on the many Congressional CSPAN/CNBC witch hunts going on.

  2. @ MacGenius

If we can’t have a story like this one, without any sort of political influence or consequence, without devolving into ideological BS then the comments section on MDN is doomed to be the land of the trolls and the assholes.

Where did these crazy right wing extremists come from? They seem to be all over MDN. The democrats did not single handedly cause the economic crisis, nor did the republicans. Lots of people made decisions that contributed to the problem. Your ranting about the evils of democrats is unjustified, off topic, and unwanted. Any rant about the evils of the republicans would be similarly inappropriate and should be not be allowed either. If I can’t escape partisan bickering in Apple news, can I escape it anywhere?

  3. Now that we’ve brought “change” by giving even more power to the party that forced bad loans and obstructed Fannie Mae reform while driving jobs overseas, it should not take long for Barack Obama to set the record straight on which party is actually pushing the “failed policies of the past.”

The only question is whether he will be able to continue blaming Republicans for the disastrous policies of Democrats.

The mid-term elections are less than two years away.

  4. MSN – based on the crowd you are attracting, its time to close up shop and give the money to your investors or your favorite charity. Your site no longer has any socially redeeming value and only brings out the worst in people.
Your failure to moderate the site is your greatest weakness!
    Bye.

  5. wow, idiots are idots, sure dems spend money, but hasn’t this admin spent more money than any admin in history? Oh yeah, that’s right, they did. You morons, politics are a sad thing to believe in. You would be better off just going to work and asking your clients that one important question “Would you like fries with that, or would you prefer onion rings?”

If you knew anything about politcs you would know not to talk about them. All politicians are the same, red, blue or green. Their like people who work for any branch of government, instead of having to get a job and work, they apply for a job that makes other people’s hard earned dollars take care of their bills.

  6. Hmmm, I remember just about every politician voting to spend the money TO KICK THE SHEET OUT OUT TERRORISM after Sept 11.

Funny how that day all of a sudden doesn’t exist and Bush gets the blame for all that money that both Dems and Repub’s voted to spend.

Except Obama of course, he wasn’t given the intelligence briefs to make a smart decision because they all though he was “one of them” which he is actually, befriending the domestic terrorist Bill Ayers.

A friend of a terrorist isn’t my president.

  7. “Demos are ruinous spenders.”

what a laugh! your Repos put your descendants into debt for another two generations a-hole. guess that doesn’t count as spending tho… just borrowing… whew, what a relief!

  8. Damn another company Apple should have bought, taken off my list.
I understand the “why buy the cow when you can get the milk” idea but let me remind you that all farmers have a few chickens.
What’s Apple going to do with 25 billion? Here is a small company with headquarters just ten minutes away and a handful of brilliant engineers. Apple is going to need to start buying Talent/Engineers if they want to grow.

  9. I say we throw all the bums out, especially the lawyers. Scale the Government waaaaay back to military and basic services only, and impose strict term and pay limits on every government position. The only thing that big government can grow is more government. Washington DC doesn’t need to determine how my money is spent in my area, that’s what local government is for. Washington DC doesn’t need to have hearings ad infinitum about steroids in baseball, or who can talk on my radio. The Judiciary is NOT a legislative body, it is a deliberative one.

Oh, and I hope that IBM does very cool things with Transitive, they seem to be very smart people with good ideas. They definitely aren’t involved with our government!

  10. “[…] Democrat spending gone wild […]”

Versus, say, the Republican spending gone wild that we had for the last 8 years or so?

Actually, my concern is having the same party running all houses of the government. Whether it be Democrat or Republican, it seems like an invitation for obscene spending.

  11. Ok, I’ll stay off topic. I have to say, the Republicans that claim Democrats are big spenders clearly don’t know what they are talking about. Since President Johnson, every Democrat has increased revenue more than spending. The opposite is true for Republicans.

Yes, I agree Peter, we need some balance in the government. The truth is that neither party really represents most Americans.

  12. “Versus, say, the Republican spending gone wild that we had for the last 8 years or so?”

Right… because Republicans controls the Congress and, therefore, the budget. Just like
57.4% of Obama’s voters said [who could NOT correctly say which party controls congress (50/50 shot just by guessing)].

    Other gems:

“Obama voters did not fare nearly as well overall when asked to answer questions about statements or stories associated with Obama or Biden — 83% failed to correctly answer that Obama had won his first election by getting all of his opponents removed from the ballot, and 88% did not correctly associate Obama with his statement that his energy policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry. Most (56%) were also not able to correctly answer that Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground.

Nearly three quarters (72%) of Obama voters did not correctly identify Biden as the candidate who had to quit a previous campaign for President because he was found to have plagiarized a speech, and nearly half (47%) did not know that Biden was the one who predicted Obama would be tested by a generated international crisis during his first six months as President.”

  13. We republicans spend other people’s money then blame democrats for paying the bills, sometimes through taxes. It’s how we live our lives.

PS I’m a very embarrassed republican. The party has gone down the tubes thanks to members who control the party with religion. We have thrown out the separation of church and state.

  14. @TimeToSignOff
Didn’t you promise to leave back in message #7 because you found the off topic political comments offensive?

As for the actual topic, since Apple is rumored to be moving to an Intel only version of Mac OS X with Snow Leopard, conspiratorial minds want to know what impact this might have on Apple.

“Steal our Papermaster, we steal your PPC emulator.”
