“The release of Mac OS X 10.5.6 could be just around the corner. The update is slated to deliver wide-ranging fixes to Apple’s operating system,” Stephen Withers reports for iTWire.
“Developer notes accompanying various seed versions of Mac OS X 10.5.6 have been leaked by Portuguese-language web site hmbt.org. Those purportedly accompanying build 9G38 say there are no known issues with the update,” Withers reports. “While that does not guarantee that 10.5.6 will arrive in the next few days, it is a sign that the project is not far from completion unless some significant problems are found in the latest changes.”
“Apple has asked developers to test three particular areas,” Withers reports. “MobileMe syncing is top of the list. Developers are especially asked to test automatic synchronisation on portable computers, on networks with medium to high latency and/or constrained bandwidth, and from behind firewalls.”

But will it turn glossy screens to matte?
Because another year goes by and no Mac presents for my friends and family because they can’t stand the glossy screens.
No joke, I’ve brought them all into Apple Stores and they thought the glossy screens were terrible and reflections annoying.
If you think I’m trolling, just ignore me. But I know folks at Apple read these posts. (because I have been inside Cupertino HQ)
If you look carefully online Apple Store one can order the new MacBook Pro’s with matte screens, but that’s way too much for my folks needs.
Stupid Apple. No Choice. No Change.
You take what we give you attitude.
Well Apple, I went and bought Dells for them for the holidays, never bought a PC in my life because Mac’s were so much better. Not any more.
Vista isn’t all that bad now. Not as good as OS X, but at least there is more software and non-glossy screens.
Apple shot themselves in the foot. But then again Steve Jobs has written off the Mac for the “next big thing” anyway. He said so, look it up.
Well that’s that. Have a nice Mac day everyone.
Just keep rubbing those eyes, it’s called eyestrain from the reflections.
Chow.
Stick a mate film on these screens, and it’ll be ok!

@Reving MacHead
In 1919 Sherwood Anderson wrote a collection of short stories titled “Winesburg Ohio,” the preface of which is called “The Book of the Grotesque.”
In this short offering Anderson defines a “grotesque” as anyone who takes one truth or problem (or whatever) unto his bosom to the exclusion of all others.
That is what you have done, and that is what you have become, sir, with this issue. Please . . . buy as many Dells or HPs or Vistas or whatever you must to remove yourself from the grotesquery that has become your life with this glossy screen issue.
Whatever you do, however, please please please–PLEASE–find another site in which to vent your frustration, disappointment, hatred, and loss. Times are hard enough in this day and age without enduring one more post from your blackened soul.
ANYONE who goes and buys Dells for friends and family instead of Macs because of the glass LED screens has to be a loony.
Sad. Sad. Sad.
Raving MacHead,
I’m on the wrong side of 40, I’ve been using glossy screens 8-10 hours per day for 25 years, and I have ZERO problems with eyestrain.
Personally, I (and my co-workers, who have been using glossy screens as long- And Longer!- than me) think you’re a raving loony.
Give it a rest, or every time I see this rant, I’m going to followup with a post similar to this.
(Posted, happily, from a glossy screen 24 inch iMac, whilst sitting at a desk adjacent to a floor-to-ceiling window that’s open to direct sunlight)

and by the way, it’s spelled ‘Ciao’.
O lord, not another iteration of USB… Oops, wrong page.
But while I’m on it: What’s wrong with Firewire? I think if Apple had stuck with it on their iPods consumers of other-than-Apple computers would have demanded that Windows-running hardware standardize it on their products.
oh boy….upgrade time and more TREATS!
I have matt and glossy screen 24 inch iMacs. I prefer the glossy and spend my entire working day editing photos and videos.
Am, I glad they have Firewire though! I cannot see myself buying any computer not Firewire equipped.
Yes, we all suffered terribly through all those pre-LCD years as we were forced to use those evil, glossy CRT monitors.
I’m on the wrong side of 40, I’ve been using glossy screens 8-10 hours per day for 25 years, and I have ZERO problems with eyestrain.
Good for you, your one of the rare minority. I speak for the majority and the online polls prove that a lot of people have problems with glossy screen eyestrain.
Or else why were anti-glare screens created in the first place for CRT’s long ago if there wasn’t a problem? Right?
Glossy causes problems for people who use the computer for long hours.
LCD matte is much easier on the eyes.
Glossy screens is a cause for workplace injury and eventually someone will sue, if they had any money wouldn’t be working 8-10 hours a day in front of a glossy screen computer anyway. Making some low life do the dirty work.
Dirty Work – The Rolling Stones
The problem with CRT monitors was not so much the gloss as the combination of gloss and a curved screen. The reflections would shift and distort and would attract attention, on a flat screen they are much easier to ignore.
Perhaps Raving MacHead should change his name to Captain Ahab.
“Good for you, your one of the rare minority. I speak for the majority and the online polls prove that a lot of people have problems with glossy screen eyestrain.”
Really? Then why do matte screens account for less than 10% of sales?
Then why do matte screens account for less than 10% of sales?
If that is true it’s because Apple has removed them from all of their stores and/or make computers without them.
But all one has to do is search the online polls and see that people actually prefer matte over glossy.
Here’s one for you. Almost 31,000 people voted. There are more and many. Check out Ars Tech glossy vs matte too for a larger amount.

With such a small penis I would have not guessed one could get such a large hard on for a company/product. I suppose a person has a right to their opinion, as does a person or company have the right to decide on what path to take with it’s products. I just feel sad , I thought most people loved their families. Then this person goes and destroys his loved ones by purchasing them all windows machines. Reading about someone buying their family member computers cracks me up. I would never do for my family, friends ect ect what they are not willing to do themselves.
Raving machead has to be a liar, no truthful person would be so irresponsable in regards to their family members.
10.5.6 ? So what, Spotlight will most likely still suck. Try to do a search for files (or anything else) based on size; say for example that you’re looking for files that are beyond 150mb in size. Now look at the result window: the resulting files cannot be sorted based on their size! Hell, there isn’t even a view option for size i.e you have to click the individual files and hit info to get the size! Great thinking, Apple.
And this is just one out of many very embarrassing “bugs” found in Spotlight. Yes I know, there is Houdaspot…but why doesn’t Apple just finish their job? 🙁
iPhones and virtually all cell phones and PDAs have glossy screens. Matte screens are on the way out and for good reason. It’s like looking through a fog. Matte screens produce muddy, washed out images. Resolution is sharper and colors are brighter on glossy screens.
I’m a former matte screen person who will now accept only glossy. Reflections simply are not a problem and there is no eye strain. Most matte screen fanatics haven’t given glossy a fair test, much like Windows fanatics not giving Macs a try.
But if you must have matte, use a matte film or buy pathetic Windows machines. But do quit harping on it. You sound way too much like Windows fan boys.
“If you look carefully online Apple Store one can order the new MacBook Pro’s with matte screens, but that’s way too much for my folks needs.”
If that’s true, you might as well share that information with us.
Personally I prefer glossy, but I definitely think the matte choice should be available. Especially for photo professionals. Glossy screens on a MacBook ‘Pro’?
“…Matte screens account for less than 10% of sales…”
ummm…yeah, right.
Everyone responding to the moron ranting about whatever bug is up his nether regions-STOP!
You are giving him attention-something he never got from mommy and daddy nor does get get in real life.
You are feeding his need, the more you pay attention to him the more he will act out.
For his sake, my sake and yours ignore him.
Sure he will cry and throw a tantrum-but be firm and ignore it.
He will realize we are no longer hostages to his insecurities and delusions and move on to greener fields populated by more idiots like you used to be.
Ditto, Spotlight is a joke. No booleans…definitely an unfinished tool. And smartfolders actually got dumber in Leopard – you can’t make a smartfolder for a certain location by dragging the location/folder into the window any more.
RE:: Raving Machead….
I prefer the Glossy screens… to make a decision about the screens in the store is the wrong decision… First you have tons of overhead lighting which will reflect onto the glossy screen…
In my home, I have no overhead lighting and the screen is just outstanding! One of the reasons why I bought an iMac!
This article had nothing to do with matte vs. glossy; it was about 10.5.6 for Pete’s sake! Why the first poster took it upon himself to deliver a silly rant about glossy screens is one thing, why so many people have indulged the moron is another…
I, for one, am looking forward to 10.5.6, especially if it’s related to 2.2 for the iPhone!
