Seven must-have iPhone/iPod touch offline apps

“If you have an iPod touch, then you know the benefit of finding apps that work offline. But some iPhone owners, too, need offline access from time-to-time. Maybe you spend your commute in an underground subway or perhaps your office building has shoddy cell coverage, or maybe you just want to use your iPhone on a plane…whatever the reason, offline access to apps is still a necessary evil these days,” Sarah Perez writes for Read Write Web.

“Not to worry, though, lack of a signal doesn’t mean you have to put your iPhone (or iPod) away – there are plenty of apps today that work offline,” Perez writes.

Here are some of our favorites:
• Evernote (note-taking)
• Stanza (ebook reader)
• Instapaper (web pages for offline reading)
• Encyclopedia
• NYTimes
• MiGhtyDocs (read Google docs offline)
• An RSS Reader (Byline suggested)

  1. Zenbe Lists is a great free multiple To-Do list manager, with automatic over-the-air sync to your free online account.

so you can edit your lists anywhere. your data is stored locally, so works offline too, and then re-syncs when you connect later.
another great feature is sharing of lists with other people.

  2. I have downloaded NYT on my iPhone a few months ago, and have kept up with the updates. However, much as I would like to like it, it updates very slowly to my taste. It updates slowly even on my Wi-Fi, imagine what it’s like on the older phones with the EDGE connection. Maybe they can learn from Google how to use low resolution photos that loads snappy-fast even on dial up. But right now, as it stands, I am using the NYT app less and less every week. Therefore, for me at least, the vote is:

    NYTimes – Not there yet.

  3. @steve516 says “I’ve actually been impressed with the NYTimes lately at presenting both sides of this election season… They seem to be trying hard to provide equal time and critique of both candidates.”

Well now I have had my laugh for the day at least.

I guess the operative part of that is the “trying hard”. Unfortunately not trying hard enough, though.
