iPhone 2.2 beta 2 features direct podcast downloads, Google Street View

“Apple has given developers a taste of the new iPhone firmware, version 2.2 beta 2, and it includes a host of spiffy new features that are making the rounds online,” Robert Palmer reports for TUAW.

MacDailyNews Take: Whoa, you like to think that you’re immune to the stuff, oh yeah… It’s closer to the truth to say you can’t get enough… Sorry, that just popped up out of nowhere.

Palmer continues, “A tipster shared with us some screenshots of the new firmware, including what appears to be the ability to download podcasts directly to your iPhone (and presumably your iPod touch). This could tidily explain why Apple rejected the Podcaster app last month.”

Palmer also reports that “Google Street View will apparently be available by rotating the device into landscape mode. Public transportation support and directions for walking also seem to be included.”

  1. Does Safari on the iPhone have a status bar to see what the URL of a link is, like Safari on the Mac?

I’m not trying to be difficult; just asking. I don’t have an iPhone, and given the crappy AT&T;coverage in my area, I doubt I will for the foreseeable future.

  2. (*ahem*) Let me try that again… (*sound of cracking my knuckles*)

Exactly If you’re going to link to iTunes, please mark it as such. I’m on a laptop and sometimes, you have to wait a long time for all that horseshit to slog around and bring up the song.

I liked the song though. Reminded me of that video. Too bad iTunes doesn’t offer the video.

  3. I love my iPhone, but I loved it more as version 1.0. This 2.x is SLOW. How about fixing the performance?!! How about keeping Safari from crashing every 5 seconds? How about fixes the bugs like my songs stop playing when a get a new mail – they are only supposed to fade out for the mail ‘ding’ then fade back in, not STOP.

  4. I’m looking forward to this next version, but I’m still mad that they haven’t made the iPhone capable of writing or showing Arabic text. This should have happened a year ago. What does Apple do with the iPhones that they release into the wild in the Middle East? Just hope everyone speaks English?

  5. I didn’t think Copy/Paste was that big of a deal, but today I was walking out of my building and asked the secretary if she has an iPhone yet… She said “No, I’m waiting for the Blackberry Storm, because it can do more stuff… Like Copy & Paste.

I’m pretty sure I convinced her that an iPhone is much more advanced (and better) than a Blackberry, but still… It just shows that the “simple” features (Copy/Paste & MMS) of the iPhone are really detouring the masses.

  6. @qka – yes u can see the URL of a page in Safari by scrolling to the top.

What I really want: forward SMS messages and in the abscence of c&p;, forward phone numbers directly from contacts, email, or SMS.
