“The Mac mini may be pronounced dead as soon as today’s Apple earnings conference call, as two major retailers in Europe have confirmed to me that they can’t order any more of the little computers,” Jesus Diaz reports for Gizmodo.
“While this could signal an updated model coming in, they have been told by Apple to expect no more of it. Their impression is that—once again—the Mac mini may be dead dead DEAD for real, even while you can still order it at the Apple Store,” Diaz reports.

Hey forget the Mac Mini, it’s more fun watching Beaker and nytesky going at it!
Apple PVR please….
Thanks onionhead, it’s been a riot, right?
Apple will do whatever the hell they feel like doing, customer outrage or not, most likely with no explanation. All they’re interested in is dazzling you with their great products so they can screw more money out of you. Sure, the limited range of products that they do offer are FAR better than the competition, but…
You want a headless Mac but there’s no more mini (IF that turns out to be true)? Buy a Mac Pro or STFU.
You want a mid-range tower? Too bad. Buy what we offer or fsck off.
You want firewire? Buy last year’s model or a Macbook Pro, you cheapskate, or STFU.
You want a proper matte screen? Who gives a shit? We sell glossy.
etc. etc.
Apple are great in many ways, but they’re also arrogant fscking a$$holes who are pissing off more and more of their (previously) loyal customers. Don’t get too excited about their great financial state – YOU paid for it!
If the new iMacs have the non-gloss option, I won’t be getting a new Mac laptop. (Maybe an old one..)
Frankly, Apple is making lots of stupid decisions as of lately: the pulling of FireWire, killing of usable displays (matte) and now the killing of the mini. Are the fuckn asleep or what? BTW, I’ve been using a mini as a server for the last 2,5 yrs – zero hickups or downtime! The mini has most likely the highest bang/bucks ratio of all machines that Apple ever produced.
They can’t kill the Mini or @ least this category of computer. The Mac Mini is what Introduced me into forever buying Apple Computers in 2005. If it weren’t introduced I probably would never of bought an Apple computer.
The $499 price point is what attracted me & for years before I always felt terrible walking by an Apple store seeing those glamorous Macs on display & that beautiful OS 10’s Aqua Interface & Expandable Dock. In 2004, I had eyes set on an eMac for $999 but I didn’t have enough money ( 17 years old @ the Time ). When the Mac Mini rolled with $499 thats when I decided it was time to Get My Mac.
Since then, I’ve bought a 12-inch iBook G4 1.2Ghz, & a Late 2006 17-inch 2Ghz iMac Core 2 Duo. ( Along with the 1.2Ghz Mac Mini which started me off.) All are running Leopard
The Mac Mini also helped introduce me to the iPod ( iPod Shuffle was my first) and the iTunes Music Store. Before I used to download songs from KAZAA & used a terrible Walmart CD Player.
I now use my Mini as a Backup/ Server. Everything from my iMac & iBook will get stored on the Mini via Screen sharing & file sharing. Heck I’m using it right now because my DSL connection is down & I’m connected with dial-up on it Since my iMac doesn’t have a 56K Modem. I had thoughts of selling the mini but it comes in very useful when I least expect i like right now where I can’t dial Up with the iMac.
I don’t think I’m alone on this. This computer is what brought me to this brand & it will continue bringing people to Apple even if it’s the the hottest selling product. But I must admit that it’s in need of an update. But it will be a deep mistake for Apple to cut off their only desktop with this price point.
“The Brick is coming, the Brick is coming, get the MacMini out of the way…”
Friend of mine bought dozens of used MacMini G4s for his manufacturing plant, said they are hooked to a 12″ display. Another guy is using the latest models in his motel rooms, hooked to a LCD TV. We have them in livingroom, sauna department and motorhome.
Everybody is now waiting for a complete line of mini products, after all Apple needs to sell products that people actually need. This is especially true these days when lot of people are not going to update their desktop computer, just getting the cpu box replaced.
The above mentioned factory dude replaced his home PC with a the latest model MacMini almost by accident (was mad about his PC having problems and happened to walk by a Apple store). He thinks the other Apple products are quite useless and “ugly” but the MacMini is perfect for PC guys with style. Sigh!
Still hoping for a 1U unit, kind of an X-serve-lite that could be rack mounted with recording gear, that video and photo crews could take out in a cart, or that could find a home as a media server in a home entertainment center. Quiet & cool with lots of ports starting at $1499.
Dumping the mini would leave a gaping hole in the range. Look for something better rsn.
I really think Apple should make a stackable, modular Mac with a Mini-style base unit (possibly a home OS X server) and add-ons for media (AppleTV), storage, DVD, home management/security and more. It could drive a monitor or an HD TV directly. The Mini could have been the basis for this. AppleTV could become the basis for this since there is a Mac somewhere in that box.
First FW. Then Mini.
What next? No ethernet port since “everyone” will be connecting wirelessly? No mouse since no one will need one in a couple more years?
Apple might be leaving Mac-based room at the low end to push up from below with Multi-Touch-based computers.
Thanks to those who confirmed the MacBooks can operate with the lid closed. That is now an excellent combination with the new 24″ screen.
Also, Apple may be maintaining high prices only while the supply of LED screens remains tight, their ‘brick’ production lines get into full swing, NVidia ramps up 9400/9600 production and gets their NetBook solution operational. There are many markets in the world that Apple sells to that are not suffering in the same way the west is. After the election uncertainty is over there should be a return to growth, so why drop prices for a few months? Despite this, I think they’re missing an opportunity to gain mass volume.
@Replacement,
You know I’m in your corner!
Bring back the Cube! Mine’s still running fine after 8 years.

Yep, that’d be fantastic for a lot of people, myself included. Yet another example of how Apple’s limited range is a huge PITA.
That EFI-X dongle is looking more and more attractive!
MMW: “stage”, as in “a single-space rack mounted Mac would be FANTASTIC for musicians to use on stage!”
While it would be sad to see the Mac Mini go, if Apple replaces it with a headless, expandable, upgradable, with PCI Express slots and Firewire included iMac, then life is still good.
