Apple quietly kills Mac mini?

Apple Store“The Mac mini may be pronounced dead as soon as today’s Apple earnings conference call, as two major retailers in Europe have confirmed to me that they can’t order any more of the little computers,” Jesus Diaz reports for Gizmodo.

“While this could signal an updated model coming in, they have been told by Apple to expect no more of it. Their impression is that—once again—the Mac mini may be dead dead DEAD for real, even while you can still order it at the Apple Store,” Diaz reports.

  1. Mac Nano? Come on. They’re not going to use “nano” when referring to the computer anytime soon. “Nano” is SO much smaller than “mini.” So no, it won’t be called “Mac Nano.” That sounds stupid anyway. Keep in mind, it’s only a rumor. When’s the last time Apple killed a computer line? Ever? Not recently anyway, and not in the last 10 years to my knowledge. And no, the 12″ PB doesn’t count you little 12″PB-turds, because PBs continued to be made. Mini is an entire line. This would be something extremely out of the ordinary and I don’t see it happening.

  2. Before everyone panics, keep in mind:

    1) This is an earnings call, not a product announcement event.

    2) At the last earnings call, Apple warned about forthcoming lower margins due to an unspecified future product. Everyone thought it would have something to do with the laptop refresh, but that didn’t turn out correct. So this “yet unannounced product” is still orbiting, looking to land.

    3) If there is such a product, it might make sense that it would replace the mini, such that it is today. Be it a new, updated mini, or something else entirely.

    Relax, and enjoy the scenery…

Oh excuse me, you got me… the Cube, seven years ago. So I was off by three years. And no, I don’t know everything. “To my knowledge,” ring a bell? I didn’t claim to know everything. Bottom line is, they’re not going to cut it.

The funniest part is how worked up you got over it! Mission accomplished. I knew there was somebody out there ready to use their limited vocab on me.

  4. Until I hear a better argument, I will assume this is just that little jerk Jesus spreading FUD as is his wont.

Gizmodo in general has no scruples at all and are hardly reliable as a news source. Jesus is one of the worst of the bunch.

  5. This would totally suck. I have two people waiting in the wings for a mini revision in order for them to switch. They both have some nice Samsung monitors and don’t want to iMacs. I’ll have to tell them to keep and eye out and be ready to jump and get the latest model they have out before they disappear.

This may actually be true. I was at Apple’s SOHO store this past Saturday and they didn’t have any minis on display. I had to ask one of the reps and he confirmed that they would not have any on display.

Gotta make some calls. This sucks big time.

  6. @Moe – yep none of the few Apple stores that I’ve been to recently have had the mini’s on display (and one was a “Mini” store variety). That’s saying something when their flagship store doesn’t have the Mini’s on display.

    Peace.

  7. @holymackeral:

I am 99% certain you can run the MacBooks with the lids closed using an external monitor (and presumably extra keyboard/mouse). I have done it though I don’t remember the specifics of how it works.

Also sad to hear this if true. I had my father prepped to buy a mini to use as a HTPC. I use mine with a projector in the living room and I love it. It handles everything I need it for flawlessly – especially with the addition of the Remote app for the phone and a few airport extremes around the house!

  8. The MacMini is a very useful little machine. It can be used for all sorts of small server tasks, software testing, etc. I hope that something equally powerful and convenient takes its place.

How old are you dude? Look, 9 year olds shouldn’t be using such a website as MDN, it’s just too much for them. Oh, and you should have your mouth washed out for using the word “moron.” Although, I do have to give you credit for that huge word you used. What was it… oh yeah, simultaneiously.

  10. For jiminy’s sake! All the rumours have new Mac desktops coming out next month, and with this silly rumour, everyone is assuming that the mini is toast.

nVidia, DisplayPort, etc. etc. etc. Who said ANYTHING about the mini being killed except that a couple of companies were told that they can’t order any more.

What could that mean? As one put it above. Kill the iPod mini, and replace it with something better.

So, no more minis to order could very well mean that there will be a NEW DESKTOP in the lineup.

Will it be the Midi? Probably not.

But, it just might be the mini is gone, and another will be in its place.

Silly people getting all worked up about their mini being dropped without having a clue that there just might be another desktop that they love more in the pipeline.

    Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!!!
