“Sales of the iPhone 3G ‘siphoned off sales from other smartphone vendors’ in July, Morgan Keegan analyst Tavis McCourt wrote in a note to investors Tuesday,” The Associaed Press reports.
“The iPhone 3G remains the top-selling phone at most AT&T stores in North America and the U.K., according to data from Morgan Keegan,” AP reports.
“The analyst maintained an earlier prediction that Apple would sell 6.1 million iPhone 3Gs in the quarter that ends in September, with about half sold through AT&T stores and the other half sold in international channels,” AP reports.

That giant sucking sound you hear …
Syphon – (v) to draw off or convey [liquid] by means of a syphon. synonym – suck it Moto!
They talked about the smuggled iPhone killing the smart phone business in Russia last year. This is happening in every country and I assume that it will be the force pushing the other countries to sign up with Apple on Apple’s terms.
Mot so much MOTO as Suck it RIM.
If you were a carrier last year, and illegal iPhones were cannibalising your smartphone sales in your country, and you weren’t getting any windfall of those iPhones (except maybe some extra data usage from pre-paid accounts who are now using that iPhone), you’d want to get in on that iPhone business. Having an unlocked iPhone on a pre-paid phone is not the same as selling a legitimate iPhone with a fixed, expensive, post-paid data plan.
This wasn’t much of a surprise.
I thought Ballmer said the iPhone has no chance in the market. hehe
If half of the 3G iPhones were sold via AT&T;and the other half being sold via international stores, are Apple’s retail stores selling another half? Or do they just not count toward the total?
“half of the 3G iPhones
half being sold via international
retail stores selling another half”
Bizlaw: how can there be three halves? Do you work for the Government Accounting Office?
“The iPhone 3G remains the top-selling phone at most AT&T;stores in North America and the U.K., according to data from Morgan Keegan,” AP reports.”
“Phone” or “smartphone”?
Either way, I suppose, it’s a Jacuzzi full of ichor.
@Driver
True. But suck it just rhymed so much better with Hello MOTO I used that rather than the RIM Job reference.

And I thought that giant sucking sound was from Paris Hilton and her latest boyfriend.
Telia in Sweden reported today that the iPhone 3G was their best selling phone this month. On second place was a GSM 3G modem ahead of Nokia on third place.
As far as I know other telcos are just waiting on Apples exclusive deals to expire in a month or so.
@Driver
Please don’t be so tongue in cheek. Some people don’t understand and will feel left out.
Cubert: “And I thought that giant sucking sound was from Paris Hilton and her latest boyfriend.”
I don’t know about the sound, but Paris doesn’t need a boyfriend around in order to suck.
Steve Jobs to RIM: “I drink your milkshake! I DRINK IT UP!!!”
I’m sorry, guys. Just so’s I’ll know … just how did you think Apple was going to sell its first, much less its tenth, million iPhones? Seriously! All new sales to new customers who never had a phone before? That doesn’t really seem likely, now, does it? True, a lot of them were sold to people who never had a smart phone before, they still used it to replace the phone they had … be it ‘dumb’ or land-line.
Sheesh!
