Firefighters battle 3-alarm blaze at Apple HQ in Cupertino

According to reports, Santa Clara Countyfirefighters have put out a blaze that burned for more than three hours at the headquarters of Apple Inc. The first reports of smoke came at about 10 p.m. Tuesday night, and the fire was contained by 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The three-alarm fire scorched the roof and the second level at one of the six buildings on the company’s northern California campus in Cupertino, according to a report from The Associated Press. Local television reports say that the fire was at a “Research and Development” building and that there was extensive fire and water damage. About 100 Apple employees were working late at the time of the fire.

“It was extinguished early Wednesday morning and no one was injured,” AP reports. “Senior Communications Dispatcher Rafael Salcedo says the fire was ‘not very big, but there is going to be a lot of smoke damage.'”

We blame Milton Waddams. Luckily nobody was injured, but the damn iTeleporter is going to have to be completely rebuilt.

  1. “Luckily nobody was injured”

OK. Answered that question. Now for the thing part.

I wonder if any of the fire fighters snapped pics with their cell phones. I’m sure bogus ones will show up soon on a few sites – just look for that Photoshop fire filter.

  2. Where was Balmer when this was starting?

I’m not surprised Apple have aircon units in their R&D;facility – their egg-heads must generate huge amounts of heat from all the thinking they do!

And if it gets hot, they’re not likely to open the Windows now, are they!

  3. Valley Green Six isn’t what I would call Apple HQ. It’s still in Cupertino, but it’s about a quarter mile away from Infinite Loop.

The building is mostly office space for IS&T;staff. I think the main upshot will be that a hundred people or so will be working from home while Apple figures out what to do for replacement office space.
