Motorola’s future flagship handset, code-named “Alexander,” has been spied by The Boy Genius Report.
BGR reports that the handset’s OS will be Windows Mobile 6.1.
For the three readers now left reading this report, the Motorola entry is said to feature assisted GPS and a 5-8 mexapixel camera.
Release date is fourth quarter 2008, according to BGR.

If that’s the flagship, Moto’s fleet is sunk.
“I rather call with my shoe…”
I’ve scrapped better looking stuff than that off the bottom of MY shoe.
Macaday and McScrith you are absolutely right about the resolution myth. Without a lens to match the capability of the sensor, the picture will be no better. And lenses are likes pipes – too small and nothing goes through. I love people who take pictures with cell phones and expect that they have some archival master piece. Try enlarging it!
“I bet the housing does not crack…”
No, it will ooze like the festering sores on Steve Ballmer’s buttocks. And it won’t smell so great, either.
” And lenses are likes pipes – too small and nothing goes through.”
Kinda like the internet, huh?
I can remember when the, now defunked American Motors Company (AMC) introduced the Pacer as the “flagship” of their auto line up too. This thing is the “Pacer” of smartphones…
Looks like it’s a slider, which will make it fairly thick compared to an iPhone. It may be shorter than an iPhone, but the screen is definitely smaller, also. Not going to work well for internet use, not only due to screen size but also browser and OS.
On the other hand, what did anyone expect of Moto? Apple appears to have multi-touch locked up with patents, the other companies are years behind in development, and no one has an OS anywhere near as powerful as OS X on iPhone.
If Moto tried to compete directly with the iPhone, it would get killed. So it’s doing the next best thing – going after all those people who want tiny physical buttons and Windows Mobile.
Good luck to ’em.
@ Sir Gill Bates
You know, all that talk of Ballmer reminds me of Jeff Goldblum’s transformation in the film, The Fly.
It seems oddly applicable to this Motorola phone, too.
Wow… I have never seen such an advanced piece of device! Windows Mobile 6.1!?! Awesome… now we know how good it can be. This is just another piece of crap.
Quite steampunkish actually — a bit like a Victorian typewriter.
Mind you, I doubt that’s the effect they were really after

@ MacDaddy
Maybe Motorola will call it the CRAPZR?
Mtnmnn,
The curvy lines of the Alexander are actually reminiscent of the Pacer. Think that’s where they got their design cues? I always preferred the Gremlin myself.
If you ignore the QWERTY section, the main body tries to look like an iPhone albeit with exaggerated corner radii. I think this can fly. If you hurl it.
At least it looks like they aren’t aping the iPhone interface like every other company does.
@SGB,
A Gremlin was about the only car my old Plymouth Horizon (“The Hor”) could outrun.
When you flip the keyboard over there is a rotary dial on the back.
BGR reports that the handset’s OS will be Windows Mobile 6.1!
Freakin’ awesome. I know Motorola wouldn’t let me down. Just look at that beautiful phone. You MAC sheep must feet pretty stupid to wait all day for a dumpy I-Phone when you could have one of these. Alexander the Great. Clearly Microsoft’s partnerships are paying off with this one. Reminds me of the Dell Ditty/MSN Music partnership that rocked the MP3 player industry. Microsoft is doing it again with the Big Mo. Great job, guys!
Your potential Our passion.™
Andy,
Yeah, that movie was nasty. Maybe ‘Alexander’ will ooze that liquid crap and dissolve peoples skulls. Coool !!! Serves ’em right.
Sir Gill Bates,
Pacer is a better name for a phone, than Gremlin. I too preferred the Gremlin but, only after the Javelin (AMX). My ranking of AMC cars are as follow:
AMX
Gremlin
Hornet
Pacer
(drum roll) Matador (the last model)
All by the way, could be used as names for Motorola phones instead of the xx-OKR.
well, amazing it certainly is not. sure has a lot of nifty buttons though. and it is shiny.
honestly, with a slightly better camera, and a forward facing camera for video conferencing, the iPhone would be perfect for me…
SGB, Don’t forget the Hornet, Matador, Javelin etc….
Could it be named after Alexander Graham Bell?
You know, the guy who invented the first phone.
Cubert,
That HORizon was one bad mo’ fo’, that’s fer sure. Did yours have the optional hemi package?
Sir Gill Bates,
Also, Brooks Stevens (also notable for designing the Weinermobile) was the principle designer of many AMC products (Pacer, Gremlin, etc.). Whoever is designing phones at Moto, is most likely an understudy or greatly influenced by Stevens’s work…

Mtnmnn and Gil,
I always liked the 4 wheel drive Concord wagon. Those things were good in the snow, and looked nice too.
Hey, what about the Marlin?
Too bad about AMC.
Crass. Just plain crass. No elegance at all.
