“A quarter of a century ago, Apple sparked a personal computing revolution with the Macintosh 128K,” Marie Boran reports for Independent.ie.
“In the intervening years, the internet as we know it has been firmly shackled to the personal computer, mildly interrupted by mobile operators with their walled-garden approach to getting connected,” Boran reports.
“It is 2008 and the latest iPhone 3G has unleashed the full promise of the mobile internet, breaking our chains to the desktop and smashing through the walled-gardens of prescribed internet,” Boran reports.
Boran reports, “Mobile web is now a real and viable opportunity. We are witnessing the birth of a new internet age.”
“‘It’s about having a touchscreen and having ultra-responsivity. When you see the touch interaction working on an iPhone you realise it is a generation ahead of all these other devices,’ says Conor O’Neill, CEO of technology consultancy firm Argolon and editor of Web2Ireland.org,” Boran reports.

This is what day 21? since the iPhone 3G release? I drove by the Apple store near my house (Knox Street Store) and there was still a long line of people waiting to get an iPhone.
Come on. That has got to be an unprecedented phenomenon – one that should surly cause Apple stock to skyrocket. Do you hear it on the news? Nope. Who will be waiting in line 1 week after the latest RIM is released? No one.
Who is afraid of Apple?
@ Jamie
If you are having those kind of problems it’s not due to the 2.0 software. It’s a problem with the hardware or the software on the computer you are syncing/restoring it with. My phone has been flawless since the 2.0 release with the exception of a few crappy free apps I downloaded. You need to call tech support or take it back where you got it and get it replaced.
I don’t mind Flash when it shows the Old Spice girl. Sigh.
“Apple iPhone launches new Internet age”?
Looks like more laughably incorrect pro-Apple nonsense that’s so fashionable in the blogosphere these days.
First of all, Crapple hasn’t ushered in anything unless you can count proprietary, toy computers for smug losers or dopey MP3 players for music pirates. I wish these idiots would stop trying to re-write history. Truth is we should all be thankful for the revolutionary and remarkable innovations from Microsoft. Anybody who uses a real computer knows that.
Your potential. Our passion.™
Flash pegs my G4 processor at 100% CPU in my 12″ AluPB. Imagine what it would do to my iPhone?!?
And, there aren’t more than a few cellphones in the world that say they can play full Flash. I went thru half of the list at Adobe’s website about a month ago, and 99.9% of the cellphones listed could only play Flash Lite. I consciously avoid Flash websites, as they just bog down my AluPB.
@Zune Tang, well I must BEGRUDGINGLY admit that when you’re right you’re right.
“Looks like more laughably incorrect pro-Apple nonsense that’s so fashionable in the blogosphere these days. “
A more true statement has not been uttered in these forums.
The iPhone is a wonderful device fan boys, so stfu before you go off the deep end here.
While the iPhone is a wonderful device here’s hoping that locked up, purposefully limited, proprietary, devices built on top of collusion between companies like AT&T;and Apple is NOT the future of the Internet.
Here’s hoping that we aren’t so ridiculously thirsty for a decent mobile device that any little thing that comes along that’s marginally different isn’t treated literally like the 2nd coming of Jesus by everyone, especially the media.
All that’s needed now is for Barrack Obama to endorse the iPhone and the and we will finally know what critical mass is for complete and utter silliness.
Do I like my iPhone? Hell yeah. I particularly enjoy having twitter and turn by turn GPS directions on the phone, as well as other location based services, but does this mean a new age ?
I’ll believe it’s a new age when people don’t have to hack the iPhone to make it an actual personal device. I’ll believe it’s a new age when obviously useful applications like SKYPE are permitted on the iPhone. I’ll believe it’s a new age when more than one type of video is permitted on the iPhone.
We have to stop falling all over ourselves and acting like the iPhone is perfect. It is not. We should give credit where credit is due, but the device and the services structure concocted by Apple and AT&T;have too many negative issues that need to be pointed out.
Someone needs to point out that the Emperor has no clothes without getting caught up in how good he looks.
@R2
You have way too high regard for flash. It is a processor hog and a bandwidth hog. Not to mention most sites that use it are completely anoying or not implemented correctly. And you can do tons without flash, ever heard of php, javascript, webapps, etc? I avoid flash sites like the plague.
