Apple’s MobileMe and iWeb continue to have major issues

“A week after .Mac became MobileMe, and a day after the MobileMe team simultaneously apologized and declared the transition complete, iWeb users continue to fight insurgent errors in publishing. Users may find they are repeatedly prompted for their MobileMe name and password, that ‘damaged’ pages halt the process, or that there was simply a “.Mac” publishing error. If the publication process does succeed, published pages may not actually be published, or elements like slideshows and comments may be broken,” Charles Jade reports for Ars Technica.

“Unfortunately, there does not [yet] appear to be a fix,” Jade reports.

“Despite Apple being aware of problems with MobileMe, users should not hesitate to complain bitterly about every single ill experience via e-mail. Beyond that, there are a couple of steps iWeb users can take, the first being to make sure the recent update, version 1.1 of MobileMe, has been installed. Some iWeb users report success with ‘Publish All to .Mac,’ which republishes your entire website. Personally, I don’t recommend this, especially if you have a site with hundreds of megabytes of data. I ultimately prevailed by attempting to publish over and over until it finally worked,” Jade reports.

  1. I tried MobileMe again this morning and it was very quick and snappy. Worked great.

    I did notice that the MobileMe software update didn’t touch iWeb, which still refers to the service at .Mac. For me that says that there’s an iWeb update that’s coming that may help to address these issues.

  2. Welcome to Apple’s overpriced and under-engineered products. You didn’t actually believe that this stupid thing would actually work in a business environment did you? Everyone knows that you have to use MS Windows for support, reliability and full feature sets. I have to laugh when the Apple fan boys get screwed over and over, yet continue to hand over money to Steve Jobs Inc.

    Fortunately business owners and CIOs know the real score. The best server software, development kits and communication software has always been and always will be Microsoft. If you want a cute and over priced toy, go buy an Apple. What is the corporate laptop? HP or Dell running windows. For mobile applications everyone uses the RIM Blackberry.

    This just proves the level of incompetency that is writing the pseudo operating system called OSX. The rest of the world needs to get their work done and will stick with MS Windows and products forever.

  3. Apple’s WobbleMe woes may be in part to a myopic view of their customer base. The company has been very US-based in the past with more sales, stores, conferences, etc being on US soil, and for good reasons. The iPhone launch was a simultaneous world-wide launch, yet their servers are still all on US soil. This global effect seems to have rocked Apple’s infrastructure when demand is created in a short period of time.

    Either Apple is going to have to distribute their load amongst servers in other geographical regions in the world (like Akamai distributes updates), or stagger world-wide releases or accept that the world is a much bigger place than it used to be and build larger data farms. Much of the developing/emerging world can now afford Macs and iPhones, without yet including China and Russia.

    If Apple has too many US-based outages, the non-US Apple customers might consider it as much a problem as Americans thinking RIM’s servers based in Canada is a problem.

    Apple is playing with the big boys now, and if their few percent of sales worldwide begins to approach HP, they will need an infrastructure that can support their customers 99.999% of the time.

  4. I don’t think it’s iWeb. I use it to publish to a non-mobileme server and that works just fine.

    Since this is Apple, we know that the problems are temporary and they will get worked out. The sky is not falling, Apple is not turning into MS, and comparing Vista to OS X without the proper placement of the word “NOT” is the first sign of a troll…. or missing meds.

    In just a little while, we’ll not recall this trial at all. … not without some prodding and prompting anyway. And not without some dismay that we had to go through it. And we’ll all be better people for it too!

    In the meantime – APPLE, GET THE MESS FIXED!

To people who have the mindset “This is what people are paying $99 a year for?” I’ve spent a heck of a lot more on Microsoft based products and had a heck of a lot bigger problems than some ‘I can’t publish for a week.’ Sure it’s inconvenient…but seriously, my experience with Microsoft (as well as fixing all of the problems of most people I know) completely overshadows this. Windows IS an inconvenience. Vista more than XP for sure, but still. And yes, this is purely personal opinion. But let’s be honest…it still beats dinkin’ around with Microsoft crapware.

  6. No problems here. Every contact I update on my phone, every appointment I create in my calendar is updated when I check on MobileMe, and when I get home to check my iMac, they’re updated there, too.

    Of course, I’m not sitting there watching MobileMe when I update on my phone – why would I? Just to be able to say it’s not working?

    Real world, it seems to work fine for me.

    (and I can’t tolerate anyone that says “users should not hesitate to complain bitterly about every single ill experience.” That’s just stupid and nonproductive.

  7. You know I started using .Mac mail as my primary email address over the past year or so. So here I am suddenly with no access to important business correspondence since the mail has been out for hours today. This is damn frustrating. I pay for it so that I can count on its reliability. I use apple products, but I am definitely not happy with this transition.

    I guess you must be new here. The folks at MDN pride themselves on posting negative articles about Apple. It’s what we love about the site. It’s just that usually they also write biting, scathing remarks about the poor unfortunate authors of any article they deem to not be sycophantically pro Apple. In this case they said nothing, probably because even they realised that Apple goofed for once.

    But I guess this was all a bit difficult for you to understand, judging by your juvenile last remark.

  9. Why do I have to enter my password etc, even after checking the keep me logged in for two weeks?? This isn’t a good start/program for Apple. I am not happy with this service. It is more of a bother than it is worth. I am an Apple/Mac user since 1994 (7.5.3 to Os X 10.0).

  10. Man, it sure puts all their other successful transitions in proper perspective, doesn’t it?

    1) Motorola 68000 series chip to PowerPC
    2) OS 9 to OS X
    3) PowerPC chip to Intel
    4) iTunes from Mac only to Windows
    5) Safari from Mac only to Windows
    6) Scaling OS X down from desktops/laptops to the iPhone

    None of those could’ve been easy, but Apple pulled them off with style.

    It’s interesting how the M$ sheeple are gloating when Apple stumbles ONCE. “I’m a Mac…and I’m a PC” must be getting under your skin, huh guys?

    Not to let Apple off the hook, because they don’t deserve to be (their standards are too high), but I like what HolyMackerel said about it.

    Come on, Apple; the iPhone is truly taking you guys global. Hence, the demand is going to be coming in on a much larger scale from every continent except Antarctica. You’re talking same-day online traffic from all over, not to mention camped-out foot traffic at every store. Either stagger your launches, build out your infrastructure, or both. If you STAY ready, you don’t have to GET ready.

    I’m saying this with love as a future MobileMe customer; can’t wait to get it (but it looks like right now maybe I’d be smart to).

  11. I am still unable to sync my work PC calendar to MobileMe. I can, however, sync contacts btw my Mac at home and MobileMe, and btw MobileMe and my work PC.

    But when I configured my iPhone to get my Contacts from MobileMe instead of syncing through iTunes, all of the contacts on my iPhone DISAPPEARED from the iPhone! So I shut that feature off and synced from iTunes, and now all the contacts are on my iPhone again.

    This is getting bad. And JustJJ, no I am not sitting looking at MobileMe immediately to verify that my changes went through right away. Even after hours or days things still didn’t appear that should have.
