CodeWeavers releases Crossover Mac 7.0; supports Office 2007, Outlook 2007, Quicken 2007, Adobe CS2

CodeWeavers today announced the release of CrossOver Mac 7.0 and CrossOver Linux 7.0, both available for purchase immediately.

Both version of CrossOver 7.0 will include support for Microsoft Office 2007 (including Outlook 2007), newer versions of Quicken, and the Adobe CS and CS2 line of products, particularly Photoshop.

“We’re excited to offer Mac and Linux users significantly more supported applications,” said Jeremy White, CodeWeavers’ chief executive officer, in the press release. “We think that Mac users, especially those in corporate settings, will enjoy having native Outlook 2007 support, so they can calendar and fit into the corporate IT structure just like all those other Exchange users. The same is true for our Linux customers, who will welcome the availability of the newer Adobe applications. Linux versions for these Adobe applications are currently unavailable.”

Another major benefit of 7.0 is that it includes many of the elements of the hotly anticipated release of Wine 1.0, which was also released today. “CrossOver 7.0 contains many of the fixes that Wine 1.0 has, and will give users a great taste of what of the new version of Wine is capable of,” added White. “We really feel that 1.0 will be a major step toward making Wine an application that will run all windows applications, and we’re excited for its release.”

One of the areas of greatest enhancement in Wine lies in its significantly enhanced support for ActiveX controls within Internet Explorer. “A recurring theme we hear is the ability to use CrossOver to access Active-X intensive webpages” said White. “This upgrade takes a giant step forward by expanding the websites that can be used on a Linux or Mac system.”

CrossOver Mac 7.0 Available in Standard and Pro Editions With this release, CrossOver Mac will now be offered in two versions – Standard and Pro. The Professional version features a longer support period, as well as a complimentary copy of CodeWeavers’ CrossOver Games, a recently released application that runs many popular Windows games such as World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, EVE Online, Call of Duty 2, Team Fortress 2, and most Steam games. CrossOver LinuxPro customers will receive the same offer.

CrossOver Mac Standard is priced at US$39.95 and is a download-only product. CrossOver Mac Pro is priced at $69.95, and can be delivered with an optional CD. CrossOver Linux Standard and Pro mirrors that pricing. All CrossOver products are significantly less expensive than the cost of a Windows license, allowing CodeWeavers users to economically and legally circumvent the need for Windows.

The updated versions of CrossOver for Mac and Linux are available online at codeweavers.com and in many retail outlets in North America, via distribution through Navarre, Douglas Stewart Co., Atlantia, and others.

  1. What I don’t get is this: Big name applications that they tout as being compatible already have a (better) mac version already. Why on Earth would anyone run the Windoze version of CS or CS2 when CS3 for mac is out there?

The ONLY reason anyone would need this is to run the Windoze Apps that only run in Windoze.

    Office 2007? BFD.

  2. Main reason I bought it was games through Steam. Works pretty good considering I’m playing it on a IC2D Mac Mini over wireless.

Version 7 is an upgrade if your support is still active. Or there’s a demo version to try before buying.

  3. The one thing I see missing from this list is Internet Explorer 7. That would be awesome. The only reason I have to run parallels and an actual version of windoze xpee is to be able to do stuff I need to on IE-for-windoze-only sites. Yes, they still exist!

The program says IE6, but it’s like service pack 1. You can’t get that anymore, so you’re stuck with 7. Oh well.

  4. Looking forward to trying this out. I’d tried a previous version of Crossover, and was very spotty with its Windows app support. I stopped using it after the free trial expired. Of course, that was also based on Wine 0.8x.

In my office, we run several financial models that were built using Visual Basic, and M$ did not include VBA support with Office 2008. Thankfully my Mac has Office 2004 (which does support VBA scripts). But, if I upgrade and the only Office version available is Mac Office 2008, then I’m stuck.

No VBA support = No Macs

The ability to use Office 2007 (and other Windows apps) without having to also buy a Windows license is a welcome option given how M$ has positioned the market.

  5. Codeweavers is awesome development!

This is exactly what Mac users need, the ability to run the BEST operating system, with the necessity of running occassional Windoze only apps.

I have MANY friends who would LOVE to switch to a Mac, but have some software or another that only runs on Windoze.

Lets face it, Windoze has the advantage of a huge market share caused by the treachery of soda water salesman JOHN SCULLY on Steve Jobs, (with skull in his name, you would think “scumbag” right?).

History aside, Codeweavers has the advantage of circumventing the MICROSOFT TAX and Apple should be pouring BILLIONS into their development!

  6. What CodeWeavers needs to do is get this product into Apple Stores to sell alongside Parallels and Fusion. Customers NEED to know that they don’t have to install a copy of Windows just to run a Windows-only program that they still need (e.g. – Visio, Access, etc). This program is gold and if I still worked at an Apple Store, I would point people in their direction rather than Parallels or Fusion.

    Ever hear of Linux?

  8. the only thing I need it to run and run well is Internet Explorer 6 and 7 with Flash plug-in and Adobe Reader plug-in. that’s it. Crossover 6 running those were kind of buggy and I could only really get them to install into a Win98 bottle. Would like to run IE6 and 7 in a WinXP bottle please please please!!!

  9. Yaaawwwwn.
These programs that this supposedly runs, have they gotten them to full functionality yet?
Or are they still missing many of the features that you have under windows?

Nope-according to their site, 4000+ apps-only 13 with “Gold” rating.

  10. I played Half-Life 2, start to finish, on my Mac Mini (with the crippled graphics) using Crossover 6. With Crossover Games (now included in Crossover Pro version 7), I played Portal First Slice (demo).

A Steam update required the latest Flash player so I loaded it into the bottle running Steam, restarted the bottle and it works fine.

IE 6 runs fine and the newest Crossover has the ability to apply XP functionality within a bottle. For the money, it’s a deal.

Now if we could get a refresh to the Mini – better graphics, please!!
