“Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was egged by a protester during a speech he gave at a Hungarian University,” Matt Asay reports for CNET.
“As this video shows, the protester rose to his feet to challenge Microsoft for stealing billions in Hungarian taxpayer money, then started hurling eggs at Ballmer, who was forced to take cover behind a desk,” Asay reports.

To give Ballmer a little credit, he handled that very well. By now he should be very thick skinned.
I disagree with his vision, tactics, and past antics, but he really did not deserve that. As a teenager, I was guilty of putting snakes in mailboxes, blew up paper boxes with M-80’s, changed the words on church signs on Saturday night, hit cars with muskedines, and co-egged busses for rival high schools. But that guy went too way too far. He really crossed the line. I don’t like Ballmer, but I would never do that. He actually shined and gets my first positive comment ever.
Inappropriate behavior that I cannot condone. Let him know how you feel about him, but don’t debase yourself in the process. Let Monkeyboy be the chair thrower.
I’ve seen this done to all sorts of politicians and celebs that I personally don’t like and you know what? I’ve never thought it was cool. I can’t help thinking that it makes the thrower look just as much of an asshole as the recipient.
An egg’s capable of causing a great deal of injury if it hits the right spot (eye, temple etc). It’ll happen one day and even though I can’t stand Ballmer, I can’t gloat over this.

Egging and other forms of public humiliation at other people’s expense are immature and show absolutely no class. Make a point by not buying/using their products, don’t egg. Hold yourself to a higher standard, they may call us Mac Snobs, but let’s not digress to low levels of degradation.

The egger’s boorish behavior almost makes Ballmer look sympathetic in comparison – not exactly the outcome he was going for, I’d wager.
Still, when you consider the billions (trillions?) Microsoft has unfairly extorted from the world as a whole with their shoddy software and monopoly lock-in tactics, an egg or two in the face is pretty mild retribution, really.
Yeah, that’s just rude. But it’s a telling statement about people’s feelings toward Microsoft. Back in their heyday one couldn’t waltz over to Youtube and see a video; I’m sure the incident would have never made the press. Their grip loosens more and more with every passing day in this day and age of freely available information.
Well, I am no fan of Ballmer or M$ but I have to say, any time a physical assault is used as a means to communicate, regardless of the message, I am disappointed. Violence is the last resort, when all other forms of communication have failed.
And it would have been funnier if there were multiple protesters yelling at him and throwing eggs. One sole protester looks like a kook.
The Ballmer videos on youtube are just amazing. How Gates could give control of his company to such a moron is really stunning.

And those eggs were wasted on a man. They deserved better. Those eggs could have been poached, scrambled, or hatched and raised as chickens, to be served fried, baked, grilled, or perhaps combined with other eggs to make a chicken omelette (which Freudian by the way). Instead they were shamelessly wasted.

Why isn’t forcing a Windows tax/lock-in on businesses in an emerging country similar to the current British & US companies selling cigarettes to children in the third world? Both will be paying for years to come. Neither makes the news.

To be clear, I do not condone violence. Heated debates (read: shouting matches) are better. Eventually, everyone calms the hell down. And brains enter the converstion. People get to explore in other’s P-O-V.

That was a pretty stupid stunt, and I’m sure had very little effect on Ballmer or Microsoft’s policies. He would have had more respect had he stood up and asked intelligent questions challenging Microsoft’s Hungarian sales policies.

Not the classiest, but effective in getting media attention, and certainly less harmful than MS’s day-to-day business practices.
The egg thrower pales in comparison to the harmful effects of shoddy software. People think bad software is just harder to use. It also causes people to lose jobs, possibly lose their lives, and get hurt in many other ways.
Think how much money has been wasted because we’ve been forced to use Microcrap? Money that can also go toward food, education, healthcare, etc.
Support Linux for the long term, and buy Apple for the near term. Boycott Microsoft in the immediate term!

Does anyone know or understand what the egger was saying?
Hungarians mostly don’t wish to be recognized to be Hungarians, when they get the chance to be in company of admired, rich, western countries citizens. If they are not accepted by them, most turn offensive. That’s a national habit accompanied by social envy.
Most of them think of America like: “Try to be a part of it, if they reject you, offend it.” (That’s why Hungary joined the EU.)
This is a justified reaction, but with wrong actions taken. I think, the cake remains delicious even if one’s been denied to get a slice of it.
If Balmer would have stopped the “inquisition”, then to force the guy to give statement of his opinions and a chance to dazzle the audience with his highly developed IT and business skills during their conversation, I guess, the guy would have licked up the yolk from Balmers’ head, if he would’ve hit.
This poor guy simply realized that nobody joined him, or at least boooh-ed with him at Balmer after the first egg, so he went on with the second and third to save his concept, but then he got confused. (I think he was even thankful for getting stopped. He also might have seen some scenes on Youtube and tried to sample them.) However, finally his “revolution” has been set back.
Nonetheless the guy’s been absolutely right with his opinion: the Hungarian state hasn’t got the funds to buy the “unreliable” IT stuff from Microsoft, and the only reason they do is, that Microsoft tries to force the whole world, – using their shady business practices – to use their products.
Some Hungarian businesses also suffered outrageous prosecutions of the local BSA. But this is a more complex situation to discuss about here.
Besides: Hungary is one of those “new” european states, who gives the most capable IT technicians, and engineers as a result of the countries excellent higher education system. LINUX developers are very talented and skilled here, and even the system itself is very popular.
This might even be the reason of Balmers’ visit (or should we rather call it “audit”?!)
I’m sure: Steve Jobs would’ve enjoyed a warm welcome!
Hungarians mostly don’t wish to be recognized to be Hungarians, when they get the chance to be in company of admired, rich, western countries citizens. If they are not accepted by them, most turn offensive. That’s a national habit accompanied by social envy and self rejection.
Most of them think of America like: “Try to be a part of it, if they reject you, offend it.” (That’s why Hungary joined the EU.)
This is a justified reaction, but with wrong actions taken. I think, the cake remains delicious even if one’s been denied to get a slice of it.
If Ballmer would have stopped the “inquisition”, then to force the guy to give statement of his opinions and a chance to dazzle the audience with his highly developed IT and business skills during their conversation, I guess, the guy would have licked up the yolk from Ballmer’s head, if he would’ve hit.

Anyone who criticizes this guy for his attempted egging really ought to look into what exactly has gone on in that country involving Microsoft.
