“ClimateCounts.org aims to force companies to clearly state their environmental efforts and provide this information to customers as a tool that contributes to their purchase decision. “Business is being pushed by consumers to do its part to solve the climate crisis. The scorecard allows consumers to make good climate decisions in their everyday purchases, and it’s having an impact,” said Gary Hirshberg, ClimateCounts.org chairman. Hirshberg is also the CEO of organic yogurt maker Stonyfield Farm, which finances the campaign,” Christian Zibreg and Wolfgang Gruener report for TG Daily.
“At least in this survey, Apple doesn’t look great. The Cupertino-based company ended up with only 11 out of a maximum of 100 points for its ecological and climate efforts. Apple’s results fall far behind other tech companies: IBM is at the top with 77 points, followed by Canon (74), Toshiba (70), Sony (68), Hewlett-Packard (68), Motorola (66), Hitachi (51), Samsung (51), Siemens (51), Dell (49) and Nokia (37). ClimateCounts.org claims that Apple has no publicly stated climate impact review information available, there are insufficient efforts to reduce the climate impact, there is no climate policy stance and very little reporting on its emissions available,” Zibreg and Gruener report.

MacDailyNews Note: More about Apple’s environmental efforts here.
1) There is free energy available everywhere, the problem with that is that it is free so there is no profit to be made from it.
2) Control of energy supplies is crucial to maintaining power.
3) Apple stands out as a truthteller, that’s not good for the other guys.
4) Any way to bash Apple helps the bad guys
5) Messing up your own back yard is foolish. It’s a globalized world, your back yard is my back yard.
6) Global warming is a red herring, but it is a problem and humans are contributing. It is a red herring because the problem can be solved in very short order, working out how to profit from it is more difficult, there is a long term plan, and a plan B….. and while they are worried about global warming they may not notice what else is going on.
7) For every atom of carbon put in to the atmosphere two atoms of oxygen are taken away from oxygen breathing species.
8) The technological answer is to use more energy in freeing oxygen from mineral compounds to pump in to the atmosphere. Sounds very profitable, even more so than “healthcare” – provided they can keep the lid on free energy.
9) It matters little who you vote for, they are mostly all bought and paid for by the same cartels.
10) Free energy has been known about for 150 years.

Don’t pollute – yes
don’t be wasteful – yes
Believe in man-made global warming hype – NO!
What will climatecounts.org do with the next volcano that spews more gasses and debris into the atmosphere than what we’ve done in the last thousand years?
Maybe they’ve never heard of Mt. St. Helens.
Greenland was once green. Now it is frozen tundra.
So much for man-made global warming and destroying the earth with “paper or plastic”.
The UN extortionists and other environmental whack job should be as concerned with Iran, N. Korea, as nuclear threats as with goin’ green pseudo-science.
Global warming is an immense myth, just like the Y2K bug was. It’s just used as a vehicle to line Al Gore’s pockets. Any idiot that believes in this crap deserves to be taken for every dime they have.
Based on the comments to this article I now see the downside of Apple’s increased market share–ignorant fools have become Mac fanboys.
Well let’s just turn up the air conditioning while we play on our Macs and not worry about the planet being overwhelmed with people and their impacts. We all know when it gets really bad the rapture will come and suck us all up to Heaven. Unfortunately, that guy at the gates of heaven looks a lot like Ballmer and he has a nice Vista-loaded Dell just waiting for you in the clouds.
P.S. – I’m certainly not defending tactics of ClimateCounts.org. Using Apple’s name is just their way of drawing attention to themselves.
84 Mac Guy…
Don’t wish to shatter your delusion, but the ‘ignorant fools’ have been here for ages: in addition, they’ve been pretty abusive to anyone who might happen to believe in anthropogenic climate change change.
These people would actually turn up their air-conditioning or buy a more obscene SUV simply out of a point of principle, which appears to be linked to some perceived entitlement in some imaginary version of the Constitution. I’ll take a guess that a Venn diagram would show a massive overlap with the people who believe that income taxes are The Man’s way of keeping an ordinary joe in his place as opposed to being a necessary part of running a sophisticated industrialised economy.
Climate change is NORMAL.
Manmade Global Heating (my new term for it just cause it sounds funny) is a hoax.
When even George Bush admits he was wrong, that man-made global warming exists, maybe some of you should step back and re-evaluate the evidence.
This might help:

Mark,
You’re dealing with people who take things literally: they’re all going to actually take a step back and then complain that they can’t reach the keyboard.
I want to know who to blame for the end of the LAST ice age. See, remember how we learned about the ice bridge connecting Alaska to Russia? That disappeared at the end of the last ice age. Now, who do we need to blame for that because obviously somebody needs to pay up. Obviously there was a conservative conspiracy to bring about the end of the earth even back then.
Now that my tongue-in-cheek rant is over:
THE EARTH EXPERIENCES NATURAL CYCLES OF CLIMATE CHANGE.
I’m not disputing that we’re experiencing an upswing now, I’m just saying that there’s literally nothing we can do to effect the weather and bend it to our wills.
The great thing about Americans that believe in freedom (as in, willing to die to protect it) is that we can learn to adapt.
I knew a family in Georgia that actually built an underground home (more or less built into the side of a small hill – the front was exposed but there was grass on top) that stays warm in winter and cool in the summer. Their electricity bill is typically around $35/month. It’s easy to pick on them because we don’t see this often, but hey, maybe they’re not too crazy after all. I’m not sure how that worked out for the extra cost of digging out the ground and waterproofing and so on, and that’s certainly not an option in my region (we would need to have immersible homes here in South Louisiana).
I’m looking into options for reducing my cost in fuel and electricity but it’s primarily to reduce my dependency on utility companies, financial savings, emergency preparedness. When the grid power goes out, I don’t want to lose everything in my refrigerator/freezer. I would also like the ability to have lighting and radios in an emergency.
Please don’t let politicians scare you into action. Trust me, they have ulterior motives. Probably stock in the companies selling stuff to “make you green.” Do it because you have reached down into the cocles, or even the sub-cocles of your heart (credit to D Leary) and you realize that you are ultimately responsible for your own fate.
Climate change is a reality… what’s not is that Man has much impact on it.
Climate change is simply an aspect of the Earth’s environment and has occurred more times in the Earth’s past than any one can know. We only know for certain about the ones we do know by what their remains in the surviving geological record, but there is no way to know about all those that occurred that left no record or where remains were destroyed by changes in the geological record.
And, when it comes down to it, there is no clear-cut, start-to-finish complete trail of evidence for past climate change. There’s lot of purely speculative deduction that has been drawn to reach climate change conclusions. Just like there is no clear-cut, start-to-finish complete trail of evidence for the evolution of life or the development of man. Most stuff just hasn’t survived the upheavals of geological change. You know… the upwelling of mountain ranges, the flooding of the Mediterranean basin, continental drift and all that.
And, BTW, those geological changes… they’re a part of climate change, too. So, we’re going to have to figure out how to stop those from occurring also. After all mankind is responsible for climate change.
Scientists Studying global warming are not objective, they have a financial stake in the findings that Man is causing global warming. If the global warning studying scientists said tomorrow we were wrong this is just a natural warming cycle the planet is have, all the research money would dry up over night, the non-profits collecting money to fund their jobs, and the companies working to cash in would all go belly up.
The planet has gone through heating and cooling cycles for eons, is man having an effect on the planets natural cycles? “yes”, will it be runaway greenhouse global warming? “no”, the science and studies all show that man’s effect on climate change is less then .01 degrees per year. Can you redo the math to make is look worse? “sure”, it’s done all the time in statistic and deviations math.
The truth on human effect on global warming is between, Not at all and well maybe a fraction. Is this a reason to dismiss environmental concerns no. Pollution and waste are real problems that need to be addressed. Global warming is not an issue that should or be allowed to remove the spotlight from Pollution and waste. If the scientist that are now spending Billions and Billions of our dollars, pounds, euros, yen, pesos…. on Global Warming Research send that money on cleaning up the pollution and to create cheaper environmentally friendly sources of energy to replace carbon based fuels. They’d solve their own concerns and speculations on what is causing the Global warming according to them.
The Money stream is to lucrative to give up right now. In a few more years when the Global Warming money starts drying up it’s be off to some other natural disaster man is causing, that we need to spend Billions, Upon billions, upon Billions to study so we can prevent it.
Who remembers the Antarctic OZone hole, that scientist predicted would cause global disaster and nuclear type death and destruction. Research Scientist now are saying that the Ozone hole would not cause a major disaster to earths environment. Nor, would it have likely effect humans much. it also appears their are naturally fluctuating Ozone holes at the poles that go from very small to huge over time. So, it’s likely that their never was a serious OZone layer hole to panic about.
The Ozone Panic Scientists and the Global Warming panic Scientist are mostly the same.
April 2008 was the coolest month of April in 114 years.
Al Gore must have forgotten to sacrifice a goat to the AGW gods!
@Predrag
The connection between ClimateCounts.org and Stonyfield Farm is that Stonyfield Farm is the source of funding for ClimateCounts.org. The implication is that Stonyfield sanctioned the study which made Apple look environmentally unfriendly. That perception is seen as inaccurate by the majority members on this board.
I’m not entirely sure see your connection to holocaust denial or how it applies to an Apple Inc fan site. However this statement bleeds hypocrisy given that one paragraph later you abstain from passing judgment on ClimateCounts.org for lack of information.
How can you possibly claim deduce from responses to article that the commenters here hare anti-global warming or anti-semitic? It is inconceivable you are any more informed on the socio-political and environmental leanings of this community than you are on climatecounts.org. So given your own which you proudly planted your flag on, it is egregious that you claim competency to judge us.
By the look of this thread more conservatives are coming over from the dark side. It’s about time.
Climate change is a hoax, evolution is just a “theory”, stem cells are against nature, nuclear power is a clean energy system, we’ve been ignoring free energy for over 150 years, “abstinence only” is a successful program, we’re winning in Iraq, the economy is going swimmingly.
And the estimated population of the world will pass 6,666,666,666 today. It’s true, it’s on Slashdot!
Climate crisis or not… I am really sick of these “ratings” that are all about lip service.
Frankly, I much prefer organizations that speak through actions not words. Whether it be issues, products, whatever.
I mean Al Gore is on the friggin’ board. Surely such issues are not ignored at Apple (his OWN footprint aside.)
Plus the whole thing seems absurd. Measure the carbon produced by the server farms serving up iTunes. Do they get credit for the CDs not trucked? All absurd to worry about. Reality: the dramatic increases in energy costs will provide far more motivation than some sort of eco rating. (Now if oil as still $10 bbl, we could debate its hidden costs. But it’s $130, so every less greedy capitalist organization on the planet will conserve.)
Global warming (or climate change as they are calling it now since it is not warming) is the same as the ozone holes in the 90s. The holes were said to be man-made, caused by car exhaust, freon from air conditioners, and hair spray. If that was true the holes would be over the big cities where the people are, not over the south or north pole.
The true cause is a natural reaction of the ozonosphere when the sun’s radiation hits it. Or in the case of the ‘hole’ doesn’t hit it.
Always research all sides of an issue first and don’t just parrot what someone else has says. Otherwise you might as well be a typical PC user.
I worried about global BS.
Global warming has to do with what the average temperature is over a period of time. The average temperature of the Earth has been going up at about 1.5 degrees per year last year and I think the year before. Over the past decade there have be highest average temperature record for three or four years. It is not that there aren’t cycles of climate change but that the length of the cycles has shortened over the pas 100 years or so.
I have to agree that these organizations seem to come out of nowhere to complain about Apple. It seems they use Apple to try and get street credit and to raise money. They are not always doing it for the best reasons. Apple does needs to be proactive and not reactive. They to be upfront and to tell what they are doing to help the planet.
@hagar57 I agree with your basic conclusion but I disagree that they all use the same components. Even if Apple outsources to the same factory as say a Dell or an HP. Apple has a history of using higher quality components and even quality vendors. Tis all goes into the design considerations for which aApple pays a higher price and passes it on to us the consumer. By the same token fewer Mac end up in land fills or become toasters with blue screes of death, by virtue of Apple having a more thoughtful design, better quality control and hence a better environmental record than all those wanker computer companies that give lip service to the butt cheeks of these brainless environmentalist mouth pieces.
Apple is unfairly singled out on environmental issues BUT….
you folks posting here are acting like a bunch of materialist egomaniac fascists!
Shameful!
“you folks posting here are acting like a bunch of materialist egomaniac fascists!
Shameful!”
Thanks for all that Peter. make many friends ?
Here is a thought, how about instead of going after apple for not helping to solve the climate crisis, how about you go after the oil companies whose products are causing this crap in the first place!!!!! We need a president that will actually do something about it, not hillary though, she can’t satisfy her husband, you think she can satisify america? As bob says “I doubt it”.
