Apple iPhones sell out in UK following price cut

“The decision to cut £100 off the cost of the iPhone on Wednesday has boosted sales, with O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores around the country selling out of the device,” Mobile Today reports.

“O2 stores in Newcastle, Birmingham and London say that they sold out of the iPhone on the day of the price cuts,” Mobile Today reports.

“And an employee in Carphone Warehouse’s flagship store on London’s Oxford Street said sales had doubled from 30 per day to 60, while another Carphone staffer commented: ‘We usually sell one or two a day, but yesterday we sold about 20 – it was like launch day again.,'” Mobile Today reports.

“O2 stores are expecting more of the devices to be delivered over the weekend,” Mobile Today reports.

  1. “One day, Apple will finally understand:

    Consumers rule!!!”

Not even close. The bankers rule.

    The biggest bankers fraud: energy

Energy is freely available anywhere (ask Tesla) but as it is so much in demand it is a great way to tax people. Don’t believe science either, every scientific discovery only gets published after peer review, aka censorship by the vested interests.

Step outside the matrix and look in. Unfortunately there is no red pill, you have to use your brain, ask questions, not accept ‘beliefs’ that don’t accord with your experience.

  2. iPhone-The Next Generation is on its way!
    My wallet finger itches
waiting for the day when all that green
    that’s been
standing in the wings will beat a path
    to an Apple store
    near you.

(poor I know but … it’s what typed out)

  3. Guess Poser:

    Cynical evaluation, but true nonetheless.
Oh, and a Tesla I’d love to get, an Aptera is what I could afford to get.
Sorry, I’ve got car energy on my mind. Since gas is heading to $4 I’m going to ditch the ICE and go EV.

It’s just a matter of time.

  4. I made a post a couple of days ago predicting that it was almost obvious the iPhone would sell out in the UK after the price cut. Price arbitrage is a very simple concept and the market re-aligns nearly instantly.

If customers buying iPhones at Carphone Warehouse are not required to sign a contract in-store, I expect UK supplies of iPhone to run low fairly soon now that they cost less than the US price.

A lucrative price arbitrage may develop because the £169 price includes a 17.5% value-added tax (VAT) that is refundable for foreigners leaving the EU. The relevant detail of the Customs refund can be found under The VAT Retail Export Scheme. Of course, nothing like this really exists in America because there’s no VAT here.

Basically, a Russian or Thai (or Swiss) person walks into Carphone Warehouse, pays £ 169 and gets a refund of £ 29 at the airport from UK Customs. At a net price of £ 140 ($277), this is a sweet deal for “exporters” that is sure to clear any excess stock of 8GB iPhones in the UK in no time.

Again, it depends on the ease with which people can buy iPhones from Carphone Warehouse.

EU residents can’t participate in this scheme but can use the Swiss, Norwegians and Icelanders flying out of the UK directly back to their countries to effectively exploit a loophole to get a much cheaper iPhone. A Swiss citizen buys an iPhone in London for £ 169, gets a refund of £ 29 as he/she leaves the country by air headed back to Switzerland. Upon entry, they may pay no tax if the iPhone is opened as it is very difficult to prove that a phone isn’t a personal possession or just a 7.6% tax otherwise. Assuming tax is paid, the phone costs $298 all-in if handed to a neighboring German or French citizen to unlock for their home use.

I expect that this is very much an inventory clearing exercise and demand will soon exceed supply. People now have a channel structure in Europe that supports a grey market on economics that are better than the US.

  5. @Guess Poser:
You don’t have to believe dreamy hippy nonsense to be aware of the lie that we are living in. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Energy is not free. The dea of free energy is popular because it enables the navel gazers to justify their idleness of thought.

  6. I work for O2 and as said in a previous post, this is nothing to get excited about. We have in the same day we get a shipment of 30-60 a day and 99.5% are being sold to exporters who unlock the iPhone for nothing. While this means more iPhones in more peoples hands, it means less money in Apples as they take a small hit on each phone going for this price and lose out along with O2 on revenue from the contracts.

However it does look like they’re clearing stock ready for next gen iPhone sooner than we expected.
