Report: Apple may not restrict free iPhone apps

“In spite of fears that Apple may impose tight restrictions on third-party iPhone [and iPod touch] applications developed with its upcoming SDK, the company may loosen those restrictions for free programs,” Electronista reports.

Electronista’s source “claims that free applications are not subject to the same rules that will guide paid software downloads. In this model, free software is unlikely to be subject to much if any scrutiny by Apple,” Electronista reports.

“This system will change substantially for paid apps, however,” Electronista reports. Apple will take an “approach is similar both to its practices with the iTunes Store as well as to conventional mobile application services, [and] collect a share of the sales price.”

  1. First of all, just repeat to yourselves, “it’s just a rumor, I should really just relax.”

Nobody seems to want to have any patience with the iPhone. Keep in mind, this is an entirely new kind of platform Apple is helping to pioneer. It makes sense they’d want some kind of quality controls on the thing to start out with.

And don’t be stupid and think that the conditions Apple is establishing now will remain unchanged into the distant future. They denied third-party apps on the iPhone at the very beginning to get behind-the-scenes issues sorted out (including those that would directly impact developers). Now they’re probably going to want the initial waves of third-party apps to go through them – partially for quality-control purposes, and partially to help provide continued funding to support the iPhone further.

All of this seems pretty reasonable to me, for a company looking to establish consumer confidence in (and comfort with) a new platform like this – particularly when you have pay-to-say bloggers with itchy trigger-fingers just *waiting* for even the smallest weakness or security “crisis” related to the iPhone.

At some point in the future, once the iPhone/smartphone/geniusphone/whatever market has been firmly established, I have no doubt we’ll get the unfettered ability to download and install our own apps onto the thing without having to go through Apple.

Until then, is it too much to ask for a little patience?

  3. All the glory of the torrents, wonderful HD downloads of your favorite TV shows.

Didn’t I say HD? Who needs no stinking HDCP?!

Get Transmission and get on board!

Visit PirateBay and search for what you want, although for TV shows it’s better to search around for torrent sites that list shows.

Download the torrent file, double click and Transmission will launch and fetch the file from all the other peeps that are hosting it.

Leave Transmission running so it uploads to other peeps. The longer you keep it up, the faster your new downloads will be!

    Enjoy your freedom!

  4. “Revered, if not worshipped, Apple icon levels criticism at Apple. Well, fanbois, what have you have to say about that?”

    Revered? Worshipped?

He plays Segway polo! What more do we need to say?
