Apple today added new models of the iPhone and iPod touch which have double the memory, doubling the amount of music, photos and videos that customers can carry with them wherever they go. The revolutionary iPhone now comes in a new 16GB model for US$499, joining the 8GB model for $399. iPod touch now comes in a 32GB model for $499, joining the 16GB model for $399 and the 8GB model for $299.
“For some users, there’s never enough memory,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPod and iPhone Product Marketing, in the press release. “Now people can enjoy even more of their music, photos and videos on the most revolutionary mobile phone and best Wi-Fi mobile device in the world.”
Both iPhone and iPod touch feature Apple’s revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface and pioneering software that allows users to find and enjoy all their music, videos, photos and more with just a touch of their finger. All iPhone and iPod touch models include the latest software enhancements announced last month including the ability to automatically find your location using the new Maps application; create Web Clips for your favorite websites; customize your home screen and watch movies from the new iTunes Movie Rentals. Both iPhone and iPod touch feature the world’s most advanced mobile web browser in the world with Safari and great mobile applications including Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather and Notes.
The new 16GB iPhone is available immediately for a suggested retail price of $499 through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores and AT&T retail and online stores. The 32GB iPod touch is available worldwide immediately for a suggested retail price of $499 through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. iTunes Movie Rentals are available in the US only. iPhone and iPod touch require a Mac with a USB 2.0 port, Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later and iTunes 7.6; or a Windows PC with a USB 2.0 port and Windows Vista or Windows XP Home or Professional (Service Pack 2) or later and iTunes 7.6.
As we said this past Friday, “Expect Apple to make moves to stimulate iPod demand sooner than later via aggressive pricing and/or increased features (greater storage on flash-based models).”
“… It’s not going to lower prices on existing products if sales goals are being met or surpassed at the current prices. That’s business…”
Excuse me sounds like they sold 2.4 million iphones last quarter. Even at that pace it will still be short of the target of 10 million units for 2008, let alone the 2.4 million is for holiday season.
My guess is a lot of potential customers will be drooling over the current iteration models and just balk at the $500 price tag. So good luck Apple.
While I dont think they are evil for not lowering the price, I agree, they should have lowered the price. They are making a substantial profit on the units as is, but an iphone at 299 is a steal
it would kill the competition, especially with the up coming SDK being released, things should be good for iphone.
I found my copy Connectix Ram Doubler. How do I install that so that I can double my ram?
You people are ridiculous. Complain if Apple lowers the iPhone price; complain if they keep it the same.
If you think the iPhone/iPod Touch are too expensive, then dont f***ing buy one.
Morons.
Too many stupid posts here.
‘I could buy a laptop for that’ – Yeah, I could buy your Momma for that..
Give me a frickin’ break!
‘Apple are making too much money’ – Yeah? Want them to make $8 an hour like you?
There is NOTHING on the market like iPhone/Touch – INCREDIBLE products, and yet we hear ‘I hope they make a PDA’
16gb iPhone is GREAT! I am buying one asap.
an iphone at 299 is a steal
it would kill the competition
WHAT frickin competition? You mean the piece of crap Nokia N95? LOL!
Yeah, thats real competition baby. Not.
There is no competition.
NONE. NADA. ZILCH. NICHT. ZERO.
Just a bunch of bad phones all trying to put ‘touch screens’ on the front, misunderstanding the whole damn concept.
Gettin’ there, gettin’ there…
Now all I’m waiting for is 3G and the SDK and I am soooo there.

I paid $500 for my 30gb 3rd gen iPod — the new touch model has TWO more gigs at the same price! What’s to complain about?
@Mac_ATTY et al.
Thanks. I expected it it to be easy. I have a 14 year old pushing me to get it done ASAP

It’s called expanding iPhone into new markets worldwide throughout 2008. It’s called probably introducing new models mid-year, at the one-year anniversary of the iPhone. That’s when prices on current models will go down, when models that are actually NEW are introduced to REPLACE current models. And if that’s not enough to get to 10 million in 2008, I’m sure Apple will come up with some more sales incentives for the 2008 holiday shopping season.
I’m still balking. It will be interesting to see what the SDK brings.
I still want real chat — not this crappy “texting” — my crackberry has Google Talk and AIM.
I still want to be able to put my own damn ring tone on the phone. My 2+ year old RAZR lets me do that now. Why take a step back?
At this price I’m still unwilling to plunk down the money I’m holding for an iPhone. If the 16GB was $399 then maybe, but at $499 it is still “no.”
I’ll keep using my 16GB touch and my old RAZR and my work-issued crackberry for a while longer. I really wish we knew more about the SDK….
Just bought 8G four days ago. I definitely want the 16G (actually was holding out for this bump – wife got tired of me speculating about it and MADE me get the 8). It’s now activated/out of box.
Any way to avoid the 10% restocking return fee, or do I just have to eat it?
txdoc: No idea. Call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask.
I paid $599.00 for an 8 GB iPhone last July. No regrets. It’s a close second to my MBP as best electronic device I’ve ever owned.
Wow 16GB iPhone! what a shocker, being waiting for this but I think I’ll pass until the 3G + 64GB comes out year end…..
If you have the money go for it, what’s not to like on the iPhone it is undeniable and un-equivocally by far the BEST phone EVER….
@still balking:
You can make your own ringtones, free of charge, using Apple’s Garage Band.

I don’t think it is unreasonable to offer an upgrade path when you are producing a revised product every 6 months. If Apple doesn’t think they are making current customers mad by not offering a way to stay current – they are very wrong. There is only a finite set of the market that will pay $500k for a phone and we are not going to do it over and over. To insinuate that is simply the speed of technology is really naive. We all know how fast technology moves but that doesn’t translate to a new sale every time you introduce something new. Further I could understand certain functionality worthy of a need for a new unit (think VHS to DVD) but memory? Please – how about a removable card? Would you buy a new digital camera because you want it to hold more pictures?
Apple it walking a thin line….
Thanks for that tip. It says, “…your original song, your original audio recordings…” That excludes my current ring tones since I’ve edited a couple of songs I like.
…for a MBP update.
Prediction: By June the 8GB iPhone is history and the 16GB replaces it at the $399 price-point, or a new price-point is established around $450.
Typical Jobs marketing… incremental memory increases and the something bigger comes out next week. Thanks Steve-o.
@stillbalking
What? Just go try it will you? The only songs GarageBand won’t let you turn into ringtones are songs you have purchased through iTunes. Anything you have ripped or otherwise have imported into iTunes works just fine.
Gawd. Some people just like to complain.
ha! good one. I don’t have an iphone but I have, in the past, messed with ripped stuff in garageband. I’ll keep this in mind.
